Abstract 1

The Swedish duo Harlem, composed of Martin Thomasson and Johan Skugge, is a project with more than two decades of history, though its trajectory has been marked by pauses and significant sonic transformations. In its early days, the group explored the realms of techno and electro, crafting a dynamic and avant-garde sound within the electronic music scene. However, after a period of inactivity, Harlem resurfaced in 2021 with Bait, an album released through the Italian label Veyl that marked a turning point in their musical evolution.

Rather than returning to their original identity, the duo emerged from dormancy with a darker, more abrasive approach, leaning toward EBM, new beat, and industrial electronics. This stylistic shift allowed them to connect with a new audience and fit perfectly within Veyl's sonic universe, a label known for its shadowy aesthetic and penchant for raw, atmospheric sounds.

Since then, Harlem has continued refining this new direction, delving into dense, tension-filled soundscapes where hypnotic rhythms and industrial textures intertwine, creating a sound that is as energetic as it is unsettling. And although four years have passed since their last appearance on Veyl, and they have even evolved their name to Harlem Electronics, the essence of standout works like Bait, as well as their subsequent releases on labels such as Body Musick, remains alive in Cage. With this new eight-track LP, they reaffirm their identity once again, pushing even deeper into their signature dystopian electronic sound, blending abrasive textures, oppressive rhythms, and an atmosphere that is both hypnotic and menacing.

With a vast trajectory spanning diverse genres such as dub and minimal techno, Harlem has developed a sonic identity that defies categorization. In this project, Martin Thomasson and Johan Skugge fuse elements of electro, no wave, post-punk, disco, proto-body, dub, hip-hop, and grime, shaping a mutant sound in constant evolution. Their new LP, Cage, is a work that moves between chaos and structure, darkness and hedonism, abstraction and physicality.
