First up in a new series of Music From Memory mixtapes is Austria based Giuseppe Leonardi (@giuseppe-leonardi) with this contribution suitably named Universal Choreography. Q&A here below.

MFM: Hi Giuseppe! So, first please could you tell a bit about your background and about how you got into making music?

GL: I grew up living in Vienna where my mother is from, and my father is from Bari, southern Italy, hence the name. My family has always been very musical and after my first experiences playing drums in a gospel church, I soon also started playing guitar in a punk rock band at age 14 with my Korean friend, who significantly opened my musical horizon. I consider myself an autodidact and besides having studied sound engineering, I taught myself to play drums, guitar, bass, keys and any other instruments I can get my hands on. This past year, besides playing as a dj, I´ve had my first live experiences and preparing for a live set for a festival this spring. So it´s an exciting transition time regarding my musical development. 

MFM: We think your sound is very unique, the sort of genre bending and transcending kind, made with a lot of feeling. What and who do you regard as your influences? And how would you describe the process of making your music, is there a specific kind of Giuseppe workflow or are there any favorite instruments you can't do without?

GL: Thanks. One person that immediately comes to mind in terms of who influenced me, not only musically, is Frank Zappa. He has inspired me a lot, with his way to surprise with the unexpected. I try to expose myself to different genres that cannot be weird enough in order to get fresh new ideas. I record at my home studio where I overdub all instruments using analog gear mostly from the 80s like the ’79 Pearl Syncussion drummachine and more recently the MAM vocoder built in Bavaria. I don’t have a specific workflow - Just drawing from inspiration, life and making sure I always eat my veggies.  

MFM: Do you remember how you came up with the ideas for writing the tracks that ended up on the Second Circle release? Would you say it has a typical Giuseppe Leonardi signature sound?

GL: The ambiant ones where recorded a few years ago while working on a job in Venice, where I had to boom operate interviews with some actors. In my spare time, I went to the sea using the equipment recording the waves of the ocean. Kannibalentanz and Orpheus were actually inspired by Maloya (music from La Reunion) and was created a few days before the final selection was defined. People often say that they can recognize a particular signature sound in my music, but its not my intention.
Its difficult for me to describe my music  but I was happy to see it being called: “heady and pleasingly melodious, that actually gets better with each successive listen.”... thanks Juno. 

MFM: So, thanks a lot for making the very first contribution to our new mix series! Maybe you could tell a bit more about the mix, what inspired you, how and where you recorded it, how you came to this selection? 

GL: I am of course excited to be the first to release a mix compilation and did spend some time putting it together. My musical influences and inspirations are very broad, which I tried to transmit. I consider my mix a collaboration with all the great people that I have gotten to know, learned from, and shared music with over the years. These include people like: dj Nomad, Julian Horn, Lauren Hansom, dj Sofa, Nu Guinea, Jan Schulte, Goldcut Crates, Phaserboys, Bayete, Sebastião de los Miedos, Tingel Tangel, Walter Daniel, Noel Dinse, Marie, of course the big god-papa, Mike Burns and many more. Ultimately, the tracks that I assembled, also reflect my own creations. I hope you enoy it!

About Ondula, the brighting Star of the night:

✵✵✵ Laura Odl (Laura A. Angeles) is a sound artist, radio producer, broadcaster, musician and  Dj based in Berlin since 2007. She has completed her studies in the Berlin University of Arts (UDK) master Sound Studies and Sonic Arts. Explorer of sound and music, collector of records and cassettes tapes she also collects pieces of reality recording sounds everywhere she goes.  As an artist she works with field recordings, analogue tape machines, cassette players and other obsolete media. For her the medium is as important as the sound itself, becoming another compositional element whose manipulation influences and is part of the arrangement. Her work with field recordings consists in transforming and modifying sounds, placing them in a different context. "By investigating language, voices and sounds on a meta-level she always attempt to achieve new and unexpected meanings". In 2014 she was part of the Deutsche Oper production "Sounds for a While", being part of the creative team and performed with 4 reel-to reel tape machines and other self -made instruments. In 2017 she has presented her piece "Obsolete Resonances" at Kesselhaus Berlin, a composition for tape machines, cassette players, typewriter and fax. 
As Dj she plays under the name of Ondula,  she have played in International festivals. Exploring deep into music she proposes an Immersion in obscure electronics, forgotten tapes, Avant-garde, composers, pioneerism, rock in opposition and sound collages. “Submerged into the rivers of experimental electronics, she will always start a dialogue with those who listen, who seek and with those who swim along”.

Sneaker &amp; Stirnband connects a mutual (or mutant) love for NDW (New German Wave), German Disco, Schlager and Gertalo (German Italo). They carefully selected their 1,5h opening set for the Friday afternoon at Camp Cosmic starting in dazzling sunlight until the climax of the sunset.
Besides rare 12&quot;s and singles the mix includes some extended Sneaker edits and reworks.
For those who don’t know the Camp – Camp Cosmic is THE event for disco diggers in Europe since invented by Albion in Sweden in and now co-hosted by Alexander Arpeggio and a bunch of underground supporters from Dresden and Berlin. People from all over the world gathered for a weekend of disco magic. 2019 the festival took place in Chemnitz, Germany. Over 70 DJs and artists from more than 10 countries performed at the festival. The festival hosts a 2nd stage for electronic live acts and rather obscure DJ adventures.

Serenades Podcast #82 (HNY Edition) - Hysteric

Life stands somewhat still with the current situation. It is absolutely clear that only self-quarantine and communal efforts can get us through this. Even though these are difficult times, we thought that now could also be an opportunity to self-reflect, calm down a little bit and take a breath. For many of us this is probably going to be channelled in musical ways.

That’s why we decided to focus our series (which is already about personalized story-telling) on self-reflecting mixes in quarantine. For the next two months, we will present a mix every week and we hope that this might be a way for our contributors to communicate, and to help and support others in their situation as well. This first one is presented by Giuseppe Leonardi who is not only hot off the heels of his first release on Music from Memory (rumor has it there might be a second one soon), but whose sound also represents a blissful and gentle awakening of the good things in life. A reminder, maybe, that it is spring after all and the sun is starting to come out. 

Please stay safe, please help the ones around you and be responsible. It is not just about yourself, it is about everyone, and especially the most vulnerable ones amongst us.

a timetraveling journey through the music history

Sehr verehrte Mithörende,

ich freue mich darauf, euch heute ein Mixtape vorstellen zu dürfen, an dem ich mitlerweile etwas länger geschraubt habe. Bei unserer letzten Faultierdisko Radiosendung lief die erste Stunde davon schon im Stream und konnte die Arbeit am ersten Teil dieser Reihe nun beenden. Bis zum Jahreswechsel war ich noch als Trashmaster 3000 unterwegs und habe Partygäste mit der feinsten Selection der 70er, 80er, 90er und 00er beschallt. Im Downtempo finde ich meine Muse zur Disko wieder und kann hier beides Vereinenen. Das Titelbild ist in meinem alten Jugendclub dem AJZ Kita entstanden - dort wo ich mit dem Djing angefangen habe - das passte super wie ich finde.

In dieser Edition fangen wir im Jahre 1958 mit Peggy Lee an, arbeiten uns durch die Jahrzehnte und sacken Artists wie die Beatles, Pink Flyod, Falco, Suzi Q und andere Größen ihrer Zeit ein.
Die Moderne schlägt aber auch hier zu Buche, alle Tracks wurden von Namenhaften Künstlern der Downtempo Szene mit einem peppigen Elektrobeat aufgehübscht - dennoch bleibt der rote Faden eindeutig zu erkennen und die Tracks versprühen weiterhin die Aura ihrer Zeit.

Für die letzte Episode "In the room of spirit and time" in diesem Jahr haben wir, @frinda_di_lanco @hendrik_stein und ich gemeinsam überlegt dieses Umwelt-Spezial zu machen. Zum Einen weil es schon eine ganze Menge obskurer Musik gibt, die sich mit dem Thema Umweltzerstörung/schutz beschäftigt und zum Anderen, weil uns nicht zuletzt die Situation im Danni gerade mal wieder vor Augen führt, wie beschissen wenig Umweltklimaoderwasauchimmerschutz zählt, wenn er gegen kommerzielle Interessen abgewogen wird. Wir spielen daher nicht nur Musik sondern auch kurze Statements von Freunden in der Show zu diesem Thema.
