A  piece I created as my mother was dying from cancer, which, in my mind, became the soundtrack to her death.  Some jagged edges and darkness, but also trying to touch upon the remarkable courage she displayed through the entire process.

Due to the pandemic, a small group of band students donated their time voluntarily to remotely record their individual parts of Pomp and CIrcumstance on whatever gadget they had available at home. My graduating son, Damian Bradley, is a euphonium player in the band (as well as my son Byron on alto sax), so I volunteered to try and create a finished product with all of these individual parts. The kids played to a click track in a set tempo with headphones in order to sync everything up. There were many very unfavorable recording environments due to background noise consisting of, for example, fish tanks, cell phone vibrations, traffic sounds, the clicking of valves, etc. And since students couldn't tune to each other before their performance, the disparity in tuning was enormous. Of course, the kids had wide ranging degrees of talent and experience, and some of the parts just couldn't be synced up and ended up being unusable, unfortunately. A small group of the kids really came through with their talents and were able to carry the tune, allowing me to build the tracks around their performances, one in particular playing all of the trumpet parts himself. There was a lot of editing and mixing involved in order to create a full band sound. And unfortunately, the snare drum part was created on a practice pad and due to time constraints, there was no way to remedy the situation. But I really think it came out very nicely under the circumstances. Great luck to the Rondout Class of 2020! I'm happy to have possibly contributed in a small way to making the graduation a little more memorable.
