Laurent Garnier - Our Future

Drumcode mainstay Bart Skils links up with emerging DJ/producer Weska for a maiden collaboration.

The duo first met in 2013 when Bart played Toronto’s iconic Coda, where Weska was a regular. In friendship and in music, they clicked effortlessly. Since then, the Dutchman has become one of DC’s most vital contributors, releasing a consistent stream of standout productions on the label, highlighted by the now-classic ‘Your Mind’ with Adam Beyer. Meanwhile the rhythmic power of Weska’s productions caught the ear of Beyer who gave the young Canadian his debut on the imprint with ‘Other Places’ when ‘A-Sides Vol.7’ dropped last summer.

When Weska migrated to Berlin a plan was hatched to collaborate, with the pair swapping ideas back and forth, before linking up in Amsterdam to finish the work. The propulsive ‘Polarize’ EP is the result, a pair of cuts that have highlighted Beyer’s gigs at Department Festival in Stockholm, Junction 2 and his behemoth B2B with Cirez D at EDC Vegas. The title cut packs a punch with rugged basslines and pin-sharp percussion, while stabs of melody dip in and out with euphoric effect. ‘Lost On You’ is a heady trip into the abyss with a sinister vocal line and powerful climax.

Maceo Plex’s taste-making Ellum Audio serves up a sizzling EP from Madben, featureing a remix from men of the moment Brame & Hamo.

Frenchman Madben has a healthy reverence for Jeff Mils and Detroit techno that infuses all his work. He has been mentored by Laurent Garnier and released on a wealth of quality labels from Bedrock to Suara. A resident of the Rex Club in Paris where he puts on his MAAD parties, he is now a regular in the best clubs around Europe where he serves up his always profound sounds, something he does again here.

First up is the fantastic ‘Blooming’, with its old school rave styles and dusty breakbeats. Euphoric chords light up the whole thing and it’s a tune that is sure to get hands in the air.

Brame & Hamo are Irish sensations who are based in Berlin and known for big tunes that range from house to techno to disco. After establishing their own label they step out with a remix that is superbly stripped back. On deep rolling drums, sleek synths unfold and take you on a cosmic adventure that is well paced and cinematic.

Madben’s ‘Enjoy Yourself' is well-crafted techno with a sense of progression in the ever-evolving lead synths. Rumbling drums provide the power below and filtered, whispered vocals are an intriguing detail up top. 

Last of all, ‘Haze’ is a prickly track with snappy mental drums, off kilter synths that twist and turn and a dark energy that is tinged with industrialism.

This is a fresh techno offering that comes with plenty of new ideas that are all expertly executed.

This Winter Christopher Kah embarks on his next adventure Re/Set, a wholesome project embracing visual concepts alongside the aural, creating an immersive experience combining two of his deepest passions, film and music. It is not an easy feat to create cinematic sounds, something that breathes life into what you can see, elevating its possibilities, but with his “Party” EP Kah sets the bar extremely high for the future of his initiative. Timeless music in its purest form. Accompanying the EP is a short film curated by the Frenchman soundtracked by the title track “Party”, an atmospheric and dramatic encounter with both sound and visuals complimenting the other. 

Opening track “Night Colors” sets the mood, oozing with various textures that meld together, like liquid. The track itself creeps gently in the night, when everything begins to turn into a blur, pensive keys twinkle amongst the background of the recording.  Taking you for a walk with its subtle acid line is the aptly named “Acid Mistakes”, intelligently created by the French mastermind, there is a soft sense of urgency, but it never spirals out of control, steadily bringing back your focus from the misty first track.
