"For my cover version I chose this track by Yeasayer. The original is a  beautifully sad yet upbeat breakup song, strident and bright with synth lines cascading around a heartfelt vocal. I wanted to make it sound far more broken and fragile, so I re-played it on the piano, pitched it down, then mangled it quite heavily so it came out sort of wobbly and knackered sounding. I wanted to leave it quite bare, just letting that amazing melody lead the way." - Jon Hopkins

Jon Hopkins - I Remember

This was a surprise, spontaneous recording of my anthem 'On The Idle Hill of Summer' by The National Youth Chamber Choir of Great Britain. The anthem was written for Remembrance Sunday 2014 and was first performed in the Chapel of the Royal Hospital School. The choir is conducted by Dominic Peckham.

Nils Frahm has always said that he’s just waiting for something real special when being asked if he would ever score the music for a film. And that’s exactly what German director Sebastian Schipper presented to him with his one-take feature ‘Victoria’. Filmed in Berlin, Victoria’s plot sees a runaway party girl, who's asked by three friendly men to join them as they hit the town, but their wild night of partying suddenly turns into a bank robbery as the music changes from techno to subdued piano sounds.

For the recording session at Studio P4 in Berlin, Frahm enlisted the help of long-time collaborator and cellist Anne Müller, violist Viktor Orri Árnason and ambient artist Erik K. Skodvin of Deaf Center on guitar.

‘Victoria’ won the Berlinale Film Festival prize for Best Cinematography and has also received seven nominations including Best Soundtrack for the Deutscher Filmpreis – Germany’s highest movie award, and will be released in cinemas across Germany on June 11th with plans to release it in the UK and other countries soon.

After having my phone stolen, which held all recordings of my own compositions as well as poems and other general ideas, I found two piano improvisations I had saved to my laptop. 

Teaching myself the instrument, being labelled a 'piano basher' by less than encouraging music teachers at school for this, I feel a great sense of freedom in the piano; having not being restricted by unbending rules of traditional tuition, technically and harmonically. Though I still hold a great love of much classical music, especially Rachmaninoff whilst growing up, this treatment led to inspiration by pianists such as Nils Frahm, who show untraditional methods of playing i.e. toilet brushes. 

It is with motivation from players such as Keith Jarrett and Nils that I've decided to release music that is not perfect, in playing, conception nor development but is made live in the moment. Such as the case with their Köln and Spaces albums, respectively. The loss of my phone and many hours worth of original ideas that I felt too unpolished to release has triggered my urgency in releasing this playlist*, under the cruel nickname given that I was saving for a project I deemed finished and worthy. 

Now I realise what project is better than an ongoing testament to the rough, insightful process of exploration on my favourite, most personal instrument?

*If my recordings are miraculously recovered, there may be more added.
