Our next guests are a Bristol based duo, who need no introduction for their ethereal productions. Long term production partners Darren Beale and Kristian Townsend prefer to let their music do the talking rather than conform to this social media marketing age. 

They do so whilst boasting over 100s of releases over a multitude of quality labels, including Drumcode; Last Night on Earth; Oddity; amongst others; and, also their own Skeleton recordings.

Their live performances have further reinforced the fact that there is no formulaic rulebook when it comes to their DJ sets - diving into the deepest depths of their imaginations and hypnotising audiences with sounds that come from the heart. And now you get to hear them do it too.

When Kiasmos started out in the late 2000s, little did they know that their part-time supergroup would go stratospheric. It was the sound of two old friends from neighbouring islands – Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds and Faroese musician Janus Rasmussen – striking out against the stark piano and electropop music that they were individually celebrated for and effusively sharing their love of Berlin-inspired beats. But their pairing blew up into a world-dominating live act whose music went on to define the decade. So what does one of the most dynamic duos in electronic music do next, after all this time? There are clues in their new artwork: Kiasmos’s distinctive diamond motif, up in flames, so it can rise again from the ashes.”

Kiasmos are returning, renewed and restored, with II. It’s the triumphant followup to their universally acclaimed self-titled debut in 2014, which re-envisioned minimal techno with orchestral flourishes and weightless production. They’d made most of that album in just two weeks; this time it’s been 10 years. The making of II was a test of their friendship, but also testament to how great musical chemistry can always go the distance and be just the same as it ever was. “In the beginning, we hadn’t established any sound, so it was easy to write,” says Janus. “But we’re not the same people that we were back then; we’re older and – hopefully – wiser. We wanted to one up ourselves and to not repeat what we did before.”

The challenge, they say, was how to create something fresh and exciting, considering how music and technology had moved on. If anything felt too easy, they went another way. “We just want to make electronic music that there isn’t so much of right now,” says Janus, “to take you on a great journey that is a little bit unconventional.” 

“It’s emotional rave!” laughs Ólafur. The magic of Kiasmos is also in the cathartic release that can happen at their live shows. “We often talk about the idea of crying on the dance floor,” Ólafur continues. “That’s become our unofficial slogan.” But they also want to keep everyone, including themselves, on their toes. “II is livelier,” says Janus, “but it still retains the signature Kiasmos style of transitioning from a whisper-quiet ambience to an explosive dance beat that can blow your socks off.” Their phoenix is rising from the ashes, and ready to take flight.

Chronicles Curates : Kiasmos - Album Special

Thrillingly maximalist and joyfully unpretentious, our next guest has always remained steadfast that a good workman isn’t shackled by his tools. By just using a DAW on a laptop, along with plugins and some beginner hardware, he began his musical journey in 2012. 

And he has solidified this after hanging his debut alias, Bwana in 2018 and releasing under his own name. In just over a decade he has managed to comfortably tower his synthy productions and even create the original soundtracks, for three seasons in a row, for one of the most popular HBO TV shows of the year. 

So for our Autumn special, we go into the realms of Television and HBO at that! Just finishing its third season last month, we reached out to Nathan Micay, the Maestro behind the Original Soundtrack to praise his work, enigmatically scoring all 3 seasons. 

More is more, and inspired by Vangelis’ Chariots of Fire, after multiple spotting sessions, he scored all 3 seasons of the hit tv show, which has also been renewed for Season 4. In his own words, his reason for doing so, was to show young adults the highs and the lows of the Finance world, comparing it to entering Berghain for the first time. Super exciting yet very grey and gloomy too.  

And thus we came about this Curation, expanding into the world of Film & TV, an exciting new chapter in our Chronicles!

Our next guest is a band who’s recently had the privilege of celebrating 20 years of their debut album and till date, remain one of our favourite live metal acts. Yes, we have metal on Chronicles - as always, expect the unexpected!
 
We recently had the pleasure of seeing them selling out the o2 in London earlier this month, as they were co-headlining with another Juggernaut act, who will be on next week, that also debuted their first album exactly 20 years ago too.

They are currently touring Europe and shall be doing American & Asian dates later this year too. Playing only those 2 specific albums. And if you have yet to experience them live, you’re in for a treat. A must for all metal fans.

There is so much we can say about them and also, witnessing them live - not only was the entire crowd in unison singing their songs, they were surgically aware of each drum lick and guitar riff in every composition.

It was Kerrang's album of the year upon its release in 2005. 
It later made Metal Hammer's top 100 Metal Albums of the 21st Century and Kerrang's 21st Century Greats. And not just as die hard fans, it was absolutely a no brainer to celebrate them in this mammoth landmark in their careers.

Chronicles Curates : Bullet for my Valentine (The Poison)

Our next guest has a PHD in Computational Biology and uses his years of academia to fuel all his globally acclaimed works in the realm of art; music and science. Over the 15 years since of his ever-evolving career, he can attest being at the vanguard of artists who mastered production in Dolby Atmos; exploring the intersections of his creations with the arts and always, having human psychology as his primary driver – merging them in a manner that makes it accessible to all of us, he has accumulated fans from multiple arenas into one global conglomerate of forward thinking. 

He is at the forefront of avantgarde musical productions and seamlessly synchronising them into visual projects and his 10th studio album allows his creativity no bounds.

We first had the pleasure of meeting him when he road-tested his beta A/V vision at W1 Curates during Frieze week. And it was a concept that left us dumbfounded. We knew we had to work together at some point.

Over the course of 2 years, he collected thousands of anonymous quotes, on the basis of, ‘What would you like to express which you cannot in your every day life’. And thus some of those submissions made it as track titles to a phenomenal album – “On being”. 

This community project had an earth-shattering emotional impact of our shared psyche as humans – challenging yet honest. 

We had the privilege of being invited as one of the first in the world to listen to the album in its entirety at L-Acoustics in their HYRISS showroom, a roam boasting 34 individual subwoofers in a 17.1.12 bespoke surrounding, an uncharted experience in the realms of sound. Sensory overload is an understatement. Even more so, as the listening was followed by an intimate session of him talking us through the creative process and how that inspiration he drew from his audience(s) has led him to the A/V concept, the likes of which have yet to be seen. 

A Solo show at the Roundhouse in Camden and London’s first fully spatial audio festival, ‘Polygon’. Both of which we were gracious enough to be invited too and enjoyed in all its glory – magical!

‘On Being’, as you’ll hear, is a probe under the synthetic surface of social media to create a snapshot of our minds these days. The track titles below are the anonymous words of the public, which were constructed with justice, to reflect the emotions of what they convey.
