Beatrice, written in 1964 by Sam Rivers . Played live and recorded at Dorothy Pax in Sheffield by Chronology. A deeply felt ballad inspired by the composers wife. First recorded on his visionary debut as a leader, 1964’s Fuchsia Swing Song, “Beatrice” bridges the gap between hard bop and free jazz, with a fluid structure that Rivers floats over to create the illusion of formlessness.

CHRONOLOGY, revisiting classic compositions from the golden period of post-war jazz - 1950 to 1980. That period of 'modern jazz' saw the rise of hugely significant musicians/composers - Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock - and the heyday of the major record labels - Blue Note, Prestige, Impulse. In the late '70s new styles of composition started by Wayne Shorter in the '60s came to fruition with Kenny Wheeler and the growth of ECM records.

CHRONOLOGY use the spacious, open sound of their line-up to breath new life into arrangements of some great compositions of this era, along with jazz standards associated with those great musicians. Expect a broad range of approaches, combining buoyant Latin grooves, delicate atmospheric offerings and driving swing!
