Live recording from the WOMEX 22 Conference session: Deaf and Disabled People In The Live Music Industry. This conference session will explore the work being done in the UK and Portugal to promote inclusion in the music industry. Ask questions and create solutions for a better, more democratic and inclusive music sector. The panel will have specialists in accessibility over Portugal and UK.

Portugal has over a million deaf and disabled people. However, the live music sector does not support people with disabilities: there is a significant lack of communication, ticketing systems, staff training and programming with sign language or audio description. This has created a landscape where deaf and disabled people feel discriminated against and don’t come back to events. In contrast, the UK live music sector has consistently built up support for deaf and disabled people over the last 20 years; in 2018, Attitude is Everything reported 3.3 million deaf and disabled attendees at live music events.

Lisbon is arguably one of the most exciting places on earth for new club music yet the music has a distinctly local feel. Portugal sits at an intersection between Europe, Africa and Latin America and its club music reflects that, with a huge range of influences merging into a unique sound.

Much of this excitement comes from just a few independent networks with big visions. In this panel we’ll discuss:

- Building a global following while staying true to local audiences
- How the traditional label format is giving way to more informal distribution networks
- The links between the Lisbon sound and other lusophone scenes – kuduro, afrohouse and baile funk
- The inspiration with other global genres such as grime

Lusophone Labels To Love | WOMEX 22 Conference Session

Live recording of WOMEX 22 Conference session: Music In Sync. We all agree on the importance of music in the audiovisual sector and on the relevance of the synchronisation market for the music industry. This session addresses and gives insightful information on two major intersecting topics. Firstly, how to break into the audiovisual sector: how do the different sub-sectors of the audiovisual universe find the right music for their projects; who should be approached, when and by whom; how to be prepared; how to promote your music. Secondly, intellectual property: mapping the challenges and opportunities in the digital era; addressing the master side (recordings) and publishing side (authors’ and composers' rights); and how to secure your rights. The session is led by a moderator and two speakers with real hands-on experience.

Music In Sync | WOMEX 22 Conference Session

With more than 20 years of career and accumulating an extensive portfolio as a bass player, producer and versatile composer working in Brazil and Europe, CH Straatmann presents his second solo album ’11 Dimensions’. Recorded and mixed in São Paulo 11 Dimensions has 7 instrumental original tracks and presents a fusion of rhythms - in a hypnotic soundscape inspired by Brazilian, Cuban and African music. The first single Yomba is out on January 22nd.

The full album will be released in March of 2020 - with digital distribution by CD Baby for Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and over 150 platforms worldwide.

The sound atmosphere of the album is  a dialogue between  bass (CH) and percussion (played by Rudson Daniel) presenting a contemporary work that transcends borders. All tracks were composed, mixed and mastered by CH. ’11 Dimensions’ was recorded by Nico Paoliello and Pedro Luce at Freak Estúdio in São Paulo. The cover art is signed by artist and musician Ayam UBráis.

The Brazilian bassist has performed in the main jazz houses in Europe, such as Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express, Bull’s Head, Brasserie Zedel, Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec and in renowned places like Koko, St James’s Theater, Royal Albert Hall, Richmix, The Forge. His music has been played on radio programs such as Radio 1 Belgium (Closing Time World - presented by Zjakki Willems), “Brasil sin escala” ( Argentina), BBC Radio London, Radio Educadora (Brazil), “Brazil Music Exchange – With Jody Gillett (UK).
