"Rather Be is the outcry from a voiceless veteran who begins to question if the journey was really worth it. It speaks to the outsider who not only feels misunderstood, but unaccounted for, despite their best attempt to make their presence, with its potential for prominence, known to anyone who will dare to give it an ear. The hook is akin to Marvin throwing up his hands in utter frustration, only to admit that he should have known better “I’d rather be where you are are/here is hard/spoil the child when you spare the rod, God”. The lush strings and harmonic vocal wails provided by the sonic sorcerer known as The Custodian of Records imbues the song with an almost gospel like quality, elevating junclassic’s vulnerable verbiage to a spiritual level."
