From LIZZY AL TOQUE of #CVCBayArea: “Over the last year, I’ve been able to explore what it means to have a ’sound’ as a DJ while on my own little fantasy island, Siqodelico, a monthly residency at San Francisco’s Mothership bar. That’s where I began to trace a shoreline of tropical and romantic nostalgia with 60s and 70s Peruvian tunes on vinyl. Just recently, a fun new challenge has emerged: Peru surf. While none of the artists in my collection exclusively play surf and many of the songs are fusions of multiple genres, a thread of melodic electric guitar, pedal effects, crooning, and shouting has brought this new focus together. I hope you can sink your feet in the sand and watch the waves this summer to the sounds of Peru Surf: go-go, garage, fuzz, chicha/cumbia, boogaloo, and wah wah… Peru Surf is ???% surf, 100% Peruvian.”

So often, it’ll try to stop me, creates unnecessary worry, makes me feel like I’m not good enough, etc. Well, I’m grateful to say it didn’t prevent me from creating this mix, even though it was pretty close. I love curating and sharing music, but when my anxiety is screaming, sometimes I have to “feel the fear and do it anyway.” I may not always win, but for music, it's worth the try. Music has been a tool for my mental health for so long, maybe even before I realized it. This mix is dedicated to anyone who has struggled with mental health. You did it, you're here, and you're not alone. This is our dance party. No stigma allowed. As it turns out, today, October 10th, is World Mental Health Day. Please remember. You are loved. From Mare.e.fresh of #CVCBayArea: Anytime someone asks me what my favorite/most prized records are in my collection, I always point to my banda records, the corridos, y las rancheras in my collection. These songs all played in the background throughout my childhood, I’d hear them at home, at the flea market, at weddings, when we would visit Mexico, at all my favorite places as a kid. Este mix se lo dedico a mis papás, and to that very special time in my life. The last two songs on this mix are songs that according to my parents I would sing, “con mucho sentimiento y emoción” when I was a little kid (Leña de Pirul by Banda Machos, y Nieves de Enero by Chalino Sanchez) to this day some of my favorite songs. Espero que lo disfruten! <3
