EPISODE #515 (Vacation from your Mind)

Next up in our Record Club Guest Mix series is Slowe (AKA Sophie Hawes), bringing the heat with a music of Colombia special! 

We've known Sophie for some time now and it is fantastic to see her musical career take flight. There's a debut album on the way titled, 'Where The Mind Wanders'. Released July 28th on Tru Thoughts, it's a cross-genre beauty, packed with modern neo-soul songs, psychedelic moments and more traditional jazz, soul and hip hop sounds. We thoroughly recommend checking it.

Sophie's contribution to our Record Club Guest mix series is best summarised in her own words...

"When I first started listening to and being interested in music from South America, a huge part of how I first started exploring the vast world of latin music was Mr Bongo. I bought their first mr bongo presents compilation and was hooked. I ended up reaching out to Mr Bongo and traveling down to Brighton to stay for a few weeks to intern with them, during the time that their shop first opened. I was welcomed with open arms and left with armfuls of vinyl!
 
I ended up travelling to Colombia a few years later and spending a month exploring the country, and although my budget and backpack didn’t really allow me to return with heaps of rare vinyl, what I did leave with was an immense love and expanded knowledge of the music that Colombia has produced. 
 
In this mix I’ve picked my favourite songs from Colombia, with genres ranging from Salsa, Cumbia, Bolero, Champata, and funk/soul."

Mr Bongo Record Club Guest Mix - Slowe: Colombia Special

To celebrate the release of The Sound of Siam volume 2 compilers Chris Menist and Maft Sai put together this mix for us.  

The Sound of Siam volume 2 - Molam & Luk Thung Isan from North-East Thailand 1970 - 1982 

Soundway’s second foray into South East Asia is focused on North-East Thailand, the epicentre of Molam and Luk Thung Isan music. Hypnotic phin & khaen riffs, pulsing, electrified country rhythms and heartfelt vocals punctuate another journey into the lesser known reaches of 1970s Thai music. 

The first volume of The Sound of Siam, released in 2011, was the first introduction for many to the artistry and innovations of modern Thai music. One of the most popular compilations on Soundway Records the music even made it onto the big screen with ‘Mae Jom Ka Lon’ by Dao Bandon featured on the soundtrack of ‘The Hangover Part II’.  In an interview with LA Times Mick Jagger spoke of discovering the collection that “some nutter put together” after hearing the riff from Jumpin’ Jack Flash on one of the tracks from the compilation.
