These are some of the throwbacks we like to play for our events here in SD. We both grew up during the late 90’s and early 00’s so the tunes are nostalgic. This reminds me of a night out, dancing with all of my femme and LGBTQ friends. It takes me back to fond memories of growing up, and building strong femme friendships."

This mix comes directly from DJ @que_madre (CVC LA) collection.

"As I began to collect and spin songs from my East Side Story collection, I realized the majority of these artists are black and composed by black folks, yet these compilations and songs are considered to be "Chicano Oldies." This mix was inspired by my love for oldies, the importance of black lives, awareness of anti-blackness in the non-black chicanx/latinx community and the appropriation and erasure of black culture. Every song in this mix is sung and/or played by a black man or woman and directly from my personal East Side Story collection Volumes 1-12. 

Although I just the scratched the surface by giving an example of black erasure by non-black chicanxs/latinxs with this mix, I hope we can continue to have dialogues & conversations in our respective spaces/collectives on how we can continue to create more black & brown solidarity & discourse thru our events and music/mixes we put out. This mix is dedicated to all the gay babies that grow up without the privilege of having either parents present in their lives. For the gay babies that grow up in foster homes and group homes. For the gay babies that have to leave their homes because the trauma of surviving in the neighborhood outweighs the possibility of healing. This mix is for anyone interested in the ceremonia de la cumbia.

I just want to give a special shoutout to my homegirl Mare.E.Fresh for helping me develop this mix. To my mentor, Sonido Ozzy for constantly encouraging me to continue to develop my skills and reminding me to always give back to the community.” 

About SIN AMORES:
Crystal Mendoza (she/her/they/them) aka Sin Amores was born in Indio, Califas and raised in East Los Ángeles, Boyle Heights and Mexicali, Baja Califas. Crystal moved to the Bay Area 8 years ago and during that time she has had the privilege of working as a case manager for undocumented/system involved youth and families. Crystal has grown not only as a DJ but an event curator as well (she is a part of the Cumbiatón family). Crystal is the proud mother of Malaki, the 3.4 pound chihuahua who will melt your heart. Crystal is currently working towards developing an intro to djing workshop: the basics course for youth of color/ unaccompanied youngsters/ gay babies that reside in the Mission District of San Panchito.

What draws me to Lovers Rock are the themes of love and heartbreak, the warmth of the tempo and the heaviness of the bass. It was music created and mixed to sound good and feel good coming from the big speakers of the sound systems. Lovers Rock created community, highlighted women artists, and gave Black British youth a voice in the 70’s. 
 
This mix is dedicated to all the lovers out there. Whether you listen to it with your sweetheart, friends or on your own, I hope it has you swaying back & forth. xoxo. 

Lovers rock, the softer side of reggae, was created and popularized in mid-70s England by the first generation of British citizens born to Caribbean immigrants. At a time when Black British people experienced extreme racism and were denied entry into white dominated spaces, blues parties or house parties, created by community members, gave youth the opportunity to socialize and express their Jamaican and British identity through style and music. Through a Lovers Rock tune bumping from the sound system, youth could finally unwind, enjoy the music and find love.”
