Suavecito Souldies x B-Side Brujas Holiday Mix

As I began to collect and spin songs from my East Side Story collection, I realized the majority of these artists are black and composed by black folks, yet these compilations and songs are considered to be "Chicano Oldies." 

This mix was inspired by my love for oldies, the importance of black lives, anti-blackness in the non-black chicanx/latinx community and the appropriation and erasure of black culture. 

Every song on this mix is sung and/or played by a black man or woman and every song on this mix is directly from my personal East Side Story collection Volumes 1-12. Enjoy!

CHATA ( She/Her/They) is a mixed indigenous/Chicana artist from San Diego, California. She credits her artistic inspiration and resilience to her cultural upbringing and experiences. Chata is most recognized for her photography and illustrating but at heart she is a story teller, documenting and honoring not only her own story but that of her community. Chata is driven by historical knowledge and the importance of self representation, she views her vinyl collection with the same sentiment. Her passion for music and collecting stems from a generational enjoyment of musical self expression, some of her most prized 45’s can be traced back four generations. To Chata music is just another aspect of story telling and historical recognition. Much like her overall collection Chata’s mix is an ode to generations of brown and black voices who have musically influenced her, she hopes you enjoy.

Our virtual offering is a smaller program, as part of a larger traveling art exhibition titled 𝘏𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘛𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝟿𝟺 or 𝘏𝘛𝟿𝟺. This participatory art project is sponsored and organized by the Undocumented Migration Project—a non-profit research-art-education-media collective, directed by anthropologist Jason de Leon. The exhibition is composed of ~3,200 handwritten toe tags that represent migrants who have died trying to cross the Sonoran Desert of Arizona between the mid-1990s and 2019. These tags are geolocated on a wall map of the desert showing the exact locations where remains were found.⁣
⁣
Jason Mellard, director of the Center for Texas Music History at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX was asked to curate a music series in part to display how music and art can serve as sites of solidarity, remembrance, resilience, and resistance, and when CVC was asked to participate we jumped at the chance. We specifically chose the noisy election week to connect with you all, friends, and hope our video brings some healing and hope for these stressful times. Gracias for the opportunity to explore the themes of music, migration, loss, and joy through the culture of our vinyl collections! #eldiscoescultura”
