Been going through a lot of transitions and processing the past year both on a macro level just as much as on a personal level and the main thing getting me through it is knowing there’s green grass waiting for me across the way. The hopes for fun, chill, relaxing days at the river in the sun with your best friends. The comfort of a hug from your mom or grandma. The reminder that everything is fluid, and that things are not black and white or forever (but in a good way.)”

Although my family migrated to the US when I was very young, I have very vivid memories of my time living in Mexico City and experiencing Sonidero culture in the early 90’s. Mexico's Sonidero culture is a unique DJ tradition that goes back to the 1960s and is influenced by tropical music from around the world. It is about the music as much as it is about the connection between the Sonideros and the audience. 

Till this day, I can still hear the deep echoes of the voices, the heavily used effects, the melodies of the accordion and the bass bumping from the sound systems. This mix of old and new cumbias is dedicated to everyone who has had to leave their home in search for more opportunities for their families. It is dedicated to those recuerdos and to the family I’ve lost in the 27 years I haven’t been back.”

From SLEEPWALK: DJ Sleepwalk (she/her) was born in Mexico City, grew up in the Bay Area and currently lives in Los Angeles. She is a member of the Los Angeles Chapter of Chulita Vinyl Club. She has been spinning with the collective for 7 years and enjoys playing a wide range of music from Hip-Hop, Funk, Soul, House and R&B to Cumbia, Latin and World sounds. From Mare.e.fresh of #CVCBayArea: Anytime someone asks me what my favorite/most prized records are in my collection, I always point to my banda records, the corridos, y las rancheras in my collection. These songs all played in the background throughout my childhood, I’d hear them at home, at the flea market, at weddings, when we would visit Mexico, at all my favorite places as a kid. Este mix se lo dedico a mis papás, and to that very special time in my life. The last two songs on this mix are songs that according to my parents I would sing, “con mucho sentimiento y emoción” when I was a little kid (Leña de Pirul by Banda Machos, y Nieves de Enero by Chalino Sanchez) to this day some of my favorite songs. Espero que lo disfruten! <3

Chulita Mare.e.fresh - Un Rinconcito en el Cielo

Today, we feature a mix from one of our very own Chulitas - the mix comes directly from their vinyl collection.

"What inspired me to make this mix is the medicina que trai cuando estamos en la ceremonia de la CUMBIA. The call to the drum by the tambor, the influence of the afrolatinx ancestros that were resilient to colonization and fine tuned the accordion, the indigenous peoples of las ciebas that added the guiro tan sabroso. The mezcla of tunes that are tied to emocion y espiritu. 
This mix is dedicated to the alma of my papi Juan Mendoza, mi familia en Mexicali, Baja California, to mi familia en el Este de Los Angeles y Boyle Heights, and lastly, to my chosen family in the Bay Area.  
This mix could not have been made possible without the help and teaching from the one and only, Mare.E.Fresh. Sin Amores would like to especially thank Jahaira Morales, DJ Brown Amy, Sonido Ozzy (Ritmo Unido/Sonido Clash), Turbo Sonidero (Sonido Clash/ Grupo Jeje) for their inspiration, teachings, and encouragement.
