This song was originally a song with lyrics and guitars and such, intended for the credit scroll of a project I didn't want to finish. I liked the form and the melodies, but never liked the words, so this was a great opportunity to present it in a better way.

Commencement

For Battle of the Bits Outrun Chillwave

The point of the contest was to make a chillwave (80s synth retro) track with some sort of inspiration from Sega's mid-80s arcade racing classic. There were many good and surprising results throughout.

It is my experience and understanding that sounds many people attribute to synthesizers in that period weren't really synthesizers at all, so I tried to use as few as possible.

I tried my best to make this with all the time I had available because this round is so special. The chopped breaks use random sample layer and Yxx so, as with similar entries, the drums will not play the same way twice.

The inspiration for this song was a Facebook page conversation that went something like this:

Contains coarse language.

Features C64 as programmed and rendered in Deflemask, then imported into Renoise to edit into its song form, intentionally left mono and in the dead center of the mix.

Synth dressing is all emulation of instruments Kraftwerk used, including but not limited to Arturia Moog, Arp, Dexed, TAL vocoder, and somebody's free SEM VST because I couldn't find EMS Synthi.

I meant to post this a long time ago but forgot as I had a lot of other projects to work on in a row.

As much as I've complained in social media, forums, etc that I am permanently stuck in the middle third in chipmusic competition ranks, I appreciate that I can make a song like this, which I knew from the beginning was meant to be true to my own ideal but wasn't going to impress anyone technically and will therefore lose, that it still manages to place near the upper third.

I want to release What You Did around the beginning of the year, but that’s also when my son is due to be born, so I don’t want the process of releasing it to require time I may not have.

I was listening to some 90s stuff on Spotify and I realized, the “bonus tracks” came on. These were actually the extra songs on Maxi Singles, CDs that sometimes released in pairs, had alternate materials, live bonus tracks and more, but most of all, instead of promoting music with something I’m bad at like graphics, video, figurines, instead maybe I can promote music with more music.

There seems to be so much high-profile stuff coming at this time of year, however, that trying to stand out among them seems pointless, so I decided to start with a quiet song and include a collection of fireplace songs with it.

There will be more, and I want to release all of the Maxi Singles before the album, but I haven’t decided how quickly I’ll release them or if all these mess with Bandcamp’s vibe or not. I’ll try not to make collecting them tedious. 😉

50 Percentile

I've been experimenting with MilkyTracker because since my son arrived I haven't had a lot of time to sit at the PC, but it can run in my phone with little effort and I can literally work on the mix in my car.

Also, there's something special about having few visual aids, no effects in the traditional sense, whatever special character there is in the way the software blends sounds,.. It's special and I miss it a little.

And also, I've been in a mood to play freestyle because it's the only thing that hasn't made one of those retro a e s t h e t i c comebacks.

I'm sorry to be late to SunVox but although I didn't like the design of trackers like Buzz and Psycle, I got the hang of using SunVox quickly.

I think the reason I didn't get into SunVox before is because I don't like its modules at default setting. The samplers sound good and there's soemthing about its mixing algorithm that sounds great. I'd still need Renoise for making sounds and a lot of other tasks, but I hope I can find new ways to use it.

For Battle of the Bits Summer Chip 8

This was also made with my phone and Raspberry Pi, in SunVox. A generator and drum synth module work together from 3 column patterns to be a sort of AY beeper, and the MetaModule contains a sampler with a small harpsichord sample and the modules to create a wide chorus effect, played from 4 column patterns. Some filters and amplifiers are used to help with EQ/balance, but there are no other effects.
