The composer reflects on sentences from Tung Pien of The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons by Liu XIe. The piece is a search for richness and purity.

As Snow
The piece was composed in 2012 after witnessing a snowstorm in Buffalo, where the composer studied. Nostalgia and sorrow accumulated and dissipated with the falling and melting of snow. It was an experience one time in a life but a memory that lingered.

Living Dust for 12 Musicians (2015)

The piece is a musical tribute to the composer's mother who passed away in 2023. While illnesses bring sadness and struggles, life ends and transforms. The title means the four main elements along the process. SIgh, a symbol of sadness, is represented by descending glissandi. Breath, a symbol of life, is represented by air noise. They develop and progress into a variety of outbursts and textures. All of these are ended by the inevitable. But her life continues in form of DNA, generating energy quietly in the mitochondrion of every cell in the composer's body. As she converted to Christianity at the end of her life, the hymn Amazing Grace is used as a source material to conclude the piece.

In Murmuring Flies in a Translucent Box (2017), the composer explores dialogues between light and darkness hidden in a variety of textures. Rapid interchanges of harmonic and ordinary pitches as well as bowing positions creates shimmering murmurs that resemble the title figuratively.

Dedicated to Chen Yu-fang and Chen Mei-chun.

This piece looked into singing at an extremely low volume with a lot of long crescendo from nothing to a very quiet dynamic such as ppp or pp. Extremely slow bowing is required to achieve that dynamic level. However, it is practically impossible to maintain a steady bowing movement over a long time. As a result, the uneven movements create a lot of inner activities to animate a seemingly static sound. This is intentional and for this reason, the piece is titled Lento Animato.

Vocalize the Voicelessness (2013, revised in 2014)

PANG Chun-ting is a Hong Kong composer whose musical interest lies in the production of unstable sounds through the combination of pitch-based and noise-based materials. His recent outputs are characterized by high level of economy with the help of cyclic structure. 

After graduating from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, he was awarded CASH Scholarship for Overseas Studies to further his studies as New England Conservatory. In 2015, He graduated from the Ph.D. program at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York under the support of Dean’s Fellowship and Dissertation Fellowship. His principal teachers include Dr. David Felder, Prof. Malcolm Peyton, Dr. John Mallia, Prof. Mak Wai-chu and Prof. Law Wing-fai. 

Pang has received additional training from renowned composers including Chaya Czernowin, Brian Ferneyhough, Jukka Tiensuu, Raphaël Cendo and Augusta Read Thomas during his residencies at prestigious Royaumont Voix Nouvelles (France), Dian Red Kechil International Young Composers Residency (Singapore), Sävellyspaja (Finland) and Composers Conference at Wellesley College (USA). In addition, Pang has taken part in various composition courses and festivals and this led to performances of his music by various top ensembles such as Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Arditti Quartet (UK), Ensemble Linea (France), Cikada (Sweden), Quatuor Makrokosmos (Switzerland), MATCH Percussion (Australia) and Ensemble Ascolta (Germany). 

His current projects include a percussion duo for Ms. Foo Pui-yee and Mr. Thierry Miroglio.
