This is a podcast created by the Cambridge-based Churchill Archives Centre, home to the personal papers of 600 political, military and scientific figures. In this podcast, we want to open the doors to the Archives Centre by interviewing the actors who promote, conserve, study and explore the great richness of our collections. 

In this first episode, we interviewed our Senior Conservator, Sarah Lewery, who is preserving the collections for more than 20 years. She has an extended knowledge of the collections and on how to preserve them. Michael Young moving to London and living at Toynbee Hall in the East End; working at McKenna and Co, Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst's firm of solicitors in the City, presided over by Fred Gwatkin; moving on his own to a rented flat in Bloomsbury; membership of the Holborn branch of the Labour Party and standing as a candidate for the Council in Holborn and St Pancras; moving in with his mother, Edith Young, in Bloomsbury; studying for the Bar at Gray's Inn; taking an evening course at the LSE and then switching to study Economics, Politics, Social History and Law full-time there; being elected Secretary of the LSE Students' Union; going to anti-Fascist demonstrations in London with his mother, Edith, during the Spanish Civil War; his first girlfriends; travelling around on his motorbike and visiting Dartington; his continuing relationship with Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst; qualifying as a barrister; working on a plan for wartime manpower policy for Max Nicholson at PEP (Political and Economic Planning); recruitment by Lord Perth to a Civil Service unit making preparations for wartime and the withdrawal of the offer because he had been identified by MI5 as a student Communist; joining PEP as a research officer instead; the post-war reconstruction group set up by Max Nicholson and their discussions of future plans for Europe.

Margaret Thatcher interview on Iain Macleod and political philosophy, 1989

Recording of press briefings given by Bernard Ingham (MT's Chief Press Officer) on Conservative Party leadership election result at the Paris G7 summit, 20 & 21 November 1990. These briefings follow the results of the first round of the Conservative Party leadership election, where Thatcher fell 4 votes short of the 15% margin over her competitors to win outright and after which she stated that she would let her name go forward for a second ballot, although she would eventually withdraw her candidacy on 22 November.

This upload has been edited from the original held in our collections by removing an initial section where Thatcher and Douglas Herd make brief statements to the press.
