Andrew Davie, Joey Haynes and Kevin Jones – Bear’s Den to an ever-growing army of fans – formed a band in 2012. Two short years has seen euphoric word of mouth take them from early days of sofa surfing gigs via touring across Europe and North America to selling out their own 1500 capacity London headline show in May this year. All the while, their music has evolved into something spellbinding and beautiful; a gorgeous, enveloping sound driven by the steady hum of acoustic instruments and Andrew’s haunted voice delivering  “lyrically sincere and emotionally raw songs” (New York Times) that are “as timeless as heartache” (MTV). Arriving this autumn, their debut album Islands is astonishing – a record that perfectly marks the point where a band goes from best kept secret to new favourite band.

Released on Communion, Islands follows the band’s EPs Without/Within and Agape and their hugely acclaimed recent single Elysium (a track that came coupled with Marcus Haney’s remarkable short film). The album was produced by Ian Grimble (Manic Street Preachers/The 1975) at 2KHz Studio in North London. It features:

Promises

Almost four years have passed since the debut Egg Hell album, "Once Part Of A Whole Ship". Jef Maarawi returns, with his first solo work, "Comfort Food".

The music of "Comfort Food" sounds like coming out effortlessly, with laid back melodies and very few outbursts. Luscious guitars, subtle orchestrations, good chemistry between Jef Maarawi and King Elephant in production.

However, the disarming sincerity of Jef’s lyrics touches the common human weaknesses so deeply, that sometimes it hurts. And while the Black Dog wounds have been masterfully concealed with humor and cynicism, through the analgesic pop of "Comfort Food" the artist’s personal pain meets the listener who survives with the help of material or spiritual addictions, hidden behind the convenience of his own comfort foods. Somehow, Jef Maarawi's dark forest entwines more or less known stories, such as that of young Omayra Sánchez, that of the Jonestown massacre, or that of a stranger who jumps on the train tracks.

And as the stories end along with the vinyl grooves of this album, the smiling, generous heart defeats the body which is always ready to succumb and "Comfort Food" resembles a farewell letter, one step before the change.

Σχεδόν τέσσερα χρόνια έχουν περάσει από την κυκλοφορία των Egg Hell "Once Part Of A Whole Ship". O Jef Maarawi επιστρέφει, μόνος αυτή τη φορά, με τα καινούρια του τραγούδια, που συνθέτουν το δίσκο “Comfort Food”.

Η μουσική του “Comfort Food” μοιάζει να βγαίνει αβίαστα, με χαλαρές μελωδίες και ελάχιστα ξεσπάσματα. Όμορφες κιθάρες, ντελικάτες ενορχηστρώσεις, πετυχημένη χημεία μεταξύ Jef Maarawi και King Elephant στην παραγωγή.

Όμως, η αφοπλιστική στιχουργική ειλικρίνεια του Jef Maarawi αγγίζει τόσο πολύ τις κοινές ανθρώπινες αδυναμίες, που μπορεί να πονέσει. Και ενώ οι δαγκωματιές του μαύρου σκύλου έχουν καλυφθεί αριστοτεχνικά με χιούμορ στα όρια του κυνισμού, μέσα από την αναλγητική ποπ του “Comfort Food” ο προσωπικός πόνος του δημιουργού συναντά τον ακροατή που επιβιώνει μέσα από υλικές ή πνευματικές εξαρτήσεις, κρυμμένος πίσω από την ευκολία των δικών του comfort food. Κάπως έτσι το σκοτεινό δάσος του Jef Maarawi ενώνεται με ιστορίες λιγότερο ή περισσότερο γνωστές, όπως αυτή της μικρής Omayra Sánchez, αυτή της σφαγής στην Jonestown, ή εκείνη ενός άγνωστου που πηδά στις γραμμές του τρένου.

Και καθώς οι ιστορίες τελειώνουν μαζί με τα αυλάκια αυτού του δίσκου, η χαμογελαστή, γενναιόδωρη καρδιά νικά το σώμα, που είναι πάντα έτοιμο να υποκύψει και το “Comfort Food” μοιάζει με αποχαιρετιστήριο γράμμα, ένα βήμα πριν την αλλαγή.
