After dropping several tracks and performing at select festivals throughout the years, Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen dedicated the year 2014 to explore the area in-between Ólafur’s more acoustic, piano-based solo work and Janus’s synth-heavy electro pop, with their collaborative electronic project Kiasmos.

By focusing solely on their self-titled debut album, Ólafur and Janus have been able to combine and further develop their unique sound aesthetics to complete an album driven by their mutual love for electronic music. Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, a majority of the album was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesisers, drum machines and tape delays. It features a live drummer, string quartet and Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable record. If you listen closely, you can spot them record the thumb piano, finger snapping and even the sound of the metal grinder of a lighter slowly to replace the usual electronic hi-hat sounds, giving the album a far more intimate and unique atmosphere.

“We decided to start almost completely over with this record, so most of the material is written this year with the idea of making a record that can stand as one piece rather than a collection of songs. I am very excited to get a proper record out exploring a different territory than I am used to. I touch a lot on electronic genres in my own music but never have the opportunity to go full out electronic like we do here.” – Ólafur Arnalds

So when we early this year finally found the time to sit down and make a full length album there was so much we wanted to try out. Two and a half years on from the sad and untimely passing of Ewan Robertson aka Offshore, we can announce the release of a last album from the Aberdonian musician and designer. The tracks for the new record, 'Offshore' were all more or less completed before his death in 2012. His family, his partner and Big Dada have pieced the album together as close to his original intentions as they could manage, to create a suite of music which in its openness, beauty, humour and joyfulness, both hints at what Ewan could have gone on to achieve, and celebrates what a unique and lovely human being and musician he was.

In addition, artists including Ikonika, Amon Tobin, Blue Daisy, Slugabed, Mamiko Moto, Lockah and Enchante have all contributed remixes and expect videos and photographs from long time collaborators.

All profits from the record are to go to the Marfan Trust (http://marfantrust.org) at his family's choosing, it was the condition that affected Ewan.

The sadness felt by those who knew and loved Ewan is still very real, but this record is a chance to celebrate what a unique and talented individual he was. In that spirit, please enjoy your first taste of the record, "Off Peak”.

When I began making music, thought I loved the 808’s and electronic synths, I always wanted a little more fulfillment. Through a combination of a very tough year and frustration, I eventually stopped making music completely; until I found myself in a park one day listening to Jazz musicians. 

For the first time in a while, I fell in love with the freedom of music. Making what the heart wanted to hear and feel rather than what I believe fit the mainstream Soundcloud persona. As a result, I deleted most of my synths and made a deal with myself to stay true to what I deemed fit for my emotional story. 

“This, Always” is a tribute to music and love. It is a promise that I will do my best to continue tugging onto my heart stings to feel what needs to be felt rather than holding back; to let the heart lead me on unexpected journeys of memorable passion and beyond.

I hope you will follow my journey of discovery, and hope you will be inspired just as I was in that park.
