For our final record of the year, we turn to Glasgow's man of the year - Denis Sulta.

Like a good chunk of the Numbers family, he has earnt his stripes working at the coalface of techno aka Rubadub. He has crafted two excellent twelves for our bare-chested cousins at Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and is beginning to carve himself out a reputation as a DJ of some repute, expertly blending in the bangers with Sulta-certified weirdness. Denis is part of a new wave of Glaswegian artists who are doing amazing things and whose music is continuously exciting us.

‘It’s Only Real’ created by Sulta during a burst of inspiration one Sunday, takes us back to a time when techno was intricately melodic but still kicked hard in the club. Made with only the purest of intentions and a dedication to the art of moving heads and feet.

It is with a feverish excitement that we can finally announce the next EP in our catalog from our newest addition to the Second State family: Amelie Lens. Besides being quite a multi-talented virtuoso, the Belgian artist comes in hot and heavy for her debut release ‘Let It Go’ and with it showcases her prowess for dark, cutting-edge techno. Over the span of four tracks Lens takes us on a tour-de-force journey into the cerebral spaces of large, dark rooms and flashing strobe lights. Kicking things off is the hypnotically inducing 'Wild' with looping vocals laid over an ever increasing pressure of percussion and white noise. Much like the EP opener, 'Linger On' casts the same spell yet picks up the pace with racing snares and meteoric synth washes creating a deeply euphoric ride. The title track ’Let It Go' is up next and is by far the most 'cheeky' tune of the EP with a twisted acid line swirling around the constant begging of Lens’ voice encouraging you to "Let It Go, Let It Out". Rounding out the EP is 'The Finest Hour' and Lens wraps up her debut with the most psychedelic cut of the package. Low rumbling bass tones and spaced out pads over sparse drums leave lots of room for the imagination providing each listener to create their own journey to navigate. If this is Amelie Lens' debut with us, we expect a lot of very big things to come from the young Belgian and so should you. Welcome Amelie Lens!

Solid Grooves Records co-founder PAWSA readies his second full release on the label with a remix from Denmark’s Anek.

2016 has been pivotal for Solid Grooves as not only has the event series concluded a highly successful debut season in Ibiza but the imprint has quickly cemented itself as an essential platform for house and techno, fast becoming a favourite for names like Adam Beyer, Huxley, James Zabiela, Nicole Moudaber and Groove Armada whilst dominating the upper end of Beatport’s charts. Alongside Michael Bibi, PAWSA is at the helm of Solid Grooves - a producer known for appearances on Gruuv, MOOD, Relief Records, Do Not Sleep and Lost Records.

From the off ‘Twiple Fwet’ demonstrates PAWSA’s inimitable percussive style before introducing a rumbling bassline and looped vocal sample that’s destined to keep crowds moving. ‘Angel Dust’ then meanders forward using crunchy drums as sporadic beeps and echoing effects add to the heightening tension. Concluding the package, Anek’s remix of ‘Twiple Fwet’ incorporates syncopated percussion, menacing throbs and spacelike effects.

Jethro Heston re-asserts himself as one of the UK’s most exciting underground prospects with his first release of 2017.

His upbeat, vocal house cut, features acclaimed Baltimore singer/songwriter Max Marshall (who previously featured on Matrix & Futureboard’s Top 10 smash ‘Control’). Blending crunching beats, melodic synths and a hook-laden bassline, Jethro’s new heater incorporates old-school tempo and soulful vocals to solid effect.

‘Cut Me Loose’ points the way to a slew of new material from the London producer and if there’s more from where this came from in terms of immediate warehouse-level danceability, his collaboration with Cardboard Foxes and Max Marshall should lead to a significantly increased reputation for the emerging new talent.

Drumcode returns with its 6th installment of the internationally celebrated A-Sides series. Renowned for fostering a shared space between industry tastemakers and rising talent alike, the careful curation that goes into each volume is a fine example of why Beyer’s brand continues to go from strength to strength.

Techno titan Adam Beyer has grown Drumcode into a force to be reckoned with; the label has become synonymous with forward-thinking, functional techno and even after 20 years, Drumcode continues to find new boundaries to push, and ways to solidify its legacy as the world’s number one techno label. 

2017 is no exception, with Beyer’s imprint hosting it’s first stage at Tomorrowland, not to mention the expansion of the critically acclaimed Junction 2 where the Drumcode stage is the centrepiece and Adam plays the key role of festival director. The Drumcode phenomenon continues to grow each week, chiefly fuelled by Drumcode Radio, Adam’s radio show that’s broadcast in 57 countries via 86 stations and to a global audience of 16 million techno fans per week. 

The A-Sides series acts as a perfect vignette of Drumcode’s cutting-edge sound; functional yet inspired techno, all tracks tried and tested by Beyer himself. Vol. 6 continues this tradition with a collection of 16 multi-faceted cuts from a mixture of both emerging artists and experienced label friends. 

The heart-throbbing bass in Amelie Lens’ electrifying piece ‘In Silence’ sets the tone for the dark and dance-floor-ready energy that Vol.6 carries the whole way through. Other standouts include Mars Bill’s rough’n’ready ‘Mohave’. Pulsating and precise, ‘Mohave’ has highlighted many of Beyer’s sets recently as has Wehbba’s monster track ‘Fake’, which fans have been anticipating the release of all year. 

Label-favourites Dense & Pika also feature on ‘A-Sides’ Vol. 6 with their hard-hitting ‘Just a Beat’ and a huge track from Beyer himself who has joined forces with Enrico Sangiuliano to bring us their undeniably infectious ‘Preset Heaven’. 

With many more notable selections from the likes of Julian Jewell, Timmo, Tiger Stripes and Pig&Dan, A-Sides Vol. 6 is another impressive addition to the label’s prolific release roster and a testament to why Drumcode remains at the forefront of the electronic world.

Alan Fitzpatrick’s We Are The Brave celebrated its 10th release in November and to close out a truly outstanding year, they continue to set the standards higher than ever, welcoming Sasha to the WATB family this December.
 
‘Sasha and I got to hang out a little through 2016 at various gigs we played together and the idea for the collaboration was born’ Alan says. ‘I have been a Sasha fan for some time, so for this collab to now be actually happening and for it to have come together pretty quickly, given our crazy our touring schedules, just goes to show that dreams can come true if you want them bad enough.’
 
The release features one original track, with two outstanding versions, and is a true example of the work, exploration and compromise that goes into musical collaboration. ‘It was great to collaborate with Alan’ Sasha says. ‘We kept going back and forth, sharing ideas, trying different melodies, synths and beats. We were struggling to decide on a final version. In the end we just couldn't choose, so decided to release both. We’ve been testing them out on the road and they've been getting some fantastic reactions.’
 

 


A thumping kick drum, sits alongside a thick and fluid groove, setting the tone in Version 1. This track has an amalgamation of synthetic patters and vocal strands which blend seamlessly together, filtering off one another in perfect syncopation.
 
Version 2 has a little more drive, and a clearer techno path. As with V.1 its thumping kick drum rolls punches throughout the mix, with synth stabs slicing through its heady bass notes.
 
‘The process of making music together was actually really smooth and natural’ Alan adds, ‘of course you always have at the back of your mind that this is one of the biggest projects you’ve worked on and that adds a certain pressure. But I really enjoyed that aspect of this release and I feel like the uniqueness of it really added something to my creativity and imagination.’
