Y2K saw the release of Total Science’s anthem ‘Champion Sound’ Hardcore Will Never Die remix. Lurching into a new millennium, with promises of system meltdown, the end of civilisation as we know it and all other sorts of madness, its dissonant and edgy feel captured the moment perfectly. And consequently it was almost impossible to go to a Drum & Bass rave and not have this soundtrack of 2000 pummelling your eardrums then, and also ever since. 

Seen as one of the defining tunes of the genre, it has now spawned it’s own spinoff series, ‘The Hardcore Will Never Die Years’ remixes. Promising several remixes of some of the duo’s most seminal tracks from the early 2000s, from some of the biggest and best producers in the scene currently, we can now be assured of a whole host of new dancefloor weapons. 

And starting the series in true style is Break, with his ridiculous remix of ‘Squash’. A massive tune in it’s own right, ‘Squash’ was always going to need a serious working over to be bettered; and if you could trust one man to do it, it would be Break. Keeping all the original elements, brining them up to 2022 standard and then injecting his own trademark to proceedings, we are now left with everything that is good about this music in Y2K22.

Declassified Mix Series - Episode 3 - ZeroZero - Bring The Heat EP - Promo Mix

t’s with great pleasure that we can welcome the formidable talent that is Ed:it back to the CIA fold. His last release for the label came a fair few years back now, in which time this fine producer has been slowly but surely honing his craft. Always one with an ear for the subtleties within the music and an ability to produce a range of styles, while his output may have quietened down over the last year or two, his work-rate in the studio appears to have done quite the opposite. These latest four tracks that he has given CIA seem to have many of the elements and personality traits of his earlier work, but with a further refinement and quality to them. 
‘The Keep’ comprises of four cuts, ranging from deep late night rollers, jungle inspired dub work-outs and all the way round to beautifully melancholic musical pieces. This body of work truly contains something for everyone, and while it nods to several of the important heritage points within our music, it sounds contemporary and cutting edge - the perfect middle ground for a constantly growing and developing musician.

Declassified Mix Series - Episode 6 - Minor Forms - The Night Trails: Part Three - Promo Mix

We’re delighted to welcome Klippee into the CIA fold, and he bounces his way right through the door with three tracks of pure heat with his brand new ‘Raw EP’. 

The Seattle native has been making sonic waves for a bit of time now and we’ve been impressed with what we’ve heard. His ‘Raw EP’ showcases exactly the kind of vibes that have been getting his tracks into the record boxes of some of the scene’s top selectors as he comes with weighty bass and tight drums, but always that bit of funk or that jungle vibe that makes him a great fit for CIA. 

All of the tracks have quite a specific sound and feel to them - meaty yet classic breaks, big pulsating bass, and some choice samples to keep them moving. But it feels like Klippee is already carving himself quite a niche and quite a sound - one that’s going to do the damage on the floor and be sure to see his tracks getting some heavy rotation for quite some time to come.

The French maestro that is War is back on CIA, and as per usual, there’s no messing around. He always means business when he’s pumping out beats, and this new single is no different. Since relocating out of Bristol there haven’t been so many releases from the young producer, but when there have, they always ooze quality and depth and detail - strengths that he’s developed and continues to hone to the next level. ‘To Shape The Fire’ and ‘Justice’ scream precision, laser guided weapons for the floor. But they also bring a technicality and depth that few can shoe-horn into tracks that also have enough weight to test even the biggest and best systems. Drop these ones at the dance floors peril.

Quadrant & Iris have graced a who’s who of top tier Drum & Bass labels in their time, including our own CIA on a bunch of occasions. They’re a linchpin of the Seattle scene and have been for some time. 

Impish has been busy carving out his own niche on his own top quality imprint, whilst also developing and honing his now trademark sound. He’s a pillar of both the Moscow and Russian Drum & Bass scene, a go-to-guy for those into sound in that part of the world. 

And so the sum of these parts are two beautifully produced and expertly arranged club rollers that will sit neatly in any discerning DJ’s rekordbox. Built to last, built to hit with pinpoint precision, and built to hit hard, ‘Say Less’ and ‘Mute City’ are the fruit of this beautiful meeting of minds.

It’s like they were ahead of their time. Like they’d foreseen a time that would one day come. A bleak time some might say. The best of times, the worst of times. Depending what side of the Fag Ash Lil fence you might sit upon. That day when it was no longer acceptable to spark one up, whilst you waited at the bus stop for the 4 to take you home after a long hard day at the coalface. Or at the Working Mans Club. Or at the god damn club. 

No Smoking! they’d say. It’s bad for you! they’d say. Perhaps you can tell that this author is a little biased towards one of life’s little pleasures that they call smoking. But Total Science seem to sit on the other side of the fence as for them, it’s all about ‘No Smoking’. 

I for one would love to know where that title came from, because as somebody who’s had the (dubious?) pleasure to spend some time with Messers Quiff and Smithy, I don’t think they were ever particularly keen on smoking. Maybe before in a past life? 

Luckily for us, their classic ‘No Smoking’ has been given the remix treatment by the man with the biggest bass in the business. Mr Colmans as I called him before (he didn’t like it apparently, I think that’s unfair), the man who means big bad bass business, man like T>I, has stepped into Quiff’s (big running ones) and Smithy’s (smaller Air Max 1’s) shoes to bring it into 2023. And as per damn usual, it’s pure heat. Get your laughing gear around that, it’s like smoking a pack of 20 in one go!

Currently forging a path as a solo artist, the new ‘Something For The Weekend EP’ sees the emerging producer really set out his sonic stall. Currently residing in Vienna but originally hailing from the UK, he’s been diligently honing his production and sound design skills and now he’s ready to unleash his first EP out in to the world.

Dropping soon on CIA, Kublai’s ‘The Imposter EP’ is going to blow the competition away. People might not be ready for what the young Mancunian is about to drop. Nestling humbly away inside are essentially four absolute weapons. Having silently developed his skills to the next level, these tracks sound clean yet complex, worked yet fun; but most of all, most importantly, are going to shut the place down. 

Kublai just gets on with his shit, no fanfares, no unnecessary noise, no custard pies. But damn this kid can make tunes. And we’re chuffed to have him back on the label once more!
