Translation Recordings journeys into the dungeon once again with the sinister, subterranean sounds of Bassment Beats Vol. 2. Up first, Red Army’s “Yergacheffe” kicks off with rising dub-wise stylistics and a surging bassline that ripples sonic energy across the soundscape. On “The Hippies”, Brat Leeks serves up a twisted cocktail of mechanized beats and FX mixed with psychedelic synths and wavy sub frequencies. Dyl and Paragon continue the journey to depths unknown with “Abraxas”, where eerie strings and cavernous drums build into a menacing doomsday stomper of a track that crushes everything in its path with bassweight. Cid Poitier delivers the final blow with “Ramping”, whose deceptively stripped-back intro sets up a leviathan drop guaranteed to test the limits of any sound system. Bassment Beats Vol. 2 faithfully carries the torch for the series, showcasing producers from across the globe that are on the leading edge of the darker, more experimental, side of the drum & bass spectrum.

The Earth Cry EP is a body of work which draws influence from nature bringing the listener into a world of blurred genre lines once again with trademark low frequency pressure.

Cid Poitier coins the term “Sub:Electronica” to define the opening track Arrival; a delicate and progressive harp-lead journey into the exploration of sub bass frequencies resonating as low as 27hz, drawing on the sound palette of electronica, techno and drone based genres.

Title track “Earth Cry” brings an emotive tone to this record built on a foundation of dub, dubstep and orchestral undertones. Experiments into creative uses of distortion provide a juxtaposed edge to the smoother elements of this track.

Amygdala is the deep and haunting cello led symphony of this record, and is influenced by the region of the brain responsible for the formation and storage of emotional events that we experience in our lives.

The EP is concluded by Empathy 101 which brings an electronic, musical post-grime sound - layered with weighty bass to deliver a sense of digital compassion wrapped in analogue love.

The artist's ethos is to create pieces of musical art which carry meaning and can hopefully bring some good to the world and shine a spotlight on issues affecting our collective existence.

Consistent with the pursuit set out within their last four releases, this most recent outing from South London based label Sub:Clef, features four meditative and expansive tracks of UK inspired sound system music. This is the first release in the Sub:Clef “N.O.T.E.S” series, which feature two artists, one on each side of the record.

The A-side of 005 sees the return of the mighty Norwegian producer and selector Dubwoofa (his first release in over half a decade, and his Sub:Clef debut) while the flip features two JFO-produced reinterpretations of archive tracks by Sub:Clef curator Cid Poitier.

Cut A ‘Burn’, provided by the former, is a throbbing, half-time sub workout not dissimilar to Dubwoofa’s early work on Dub Police: featuring scattered, reverberating percussion and heavily modified field recordings accompanied by an immersive and cohesive low-end.

While similarly reductive and stripped back, AA ‘Hexed’ departs from the stepping intensity of the first track and introduces more irregular and shuddering drum programming: elastic subs and ghostly hymns are matched with a more subtle and complimentary drum rhythm.

Things change slightly on the B-side, as JFO provides a pair of transformative remixes, with both tracks featuring vocalist Wends. Here, the stems have been cleverly altered to provide a respectful and yet highly distinctive interpretation, with ‘Distraction’ modified to feature an almost atonal synth line, interrupted by stabs of resonant pads not dissimilar to James’ Blake’s cult ‘Harmonimix’ series. Strung alongside reverse snares, soothing pads and a meditative filter bass, the vocals glide along centrally to provide a truly immersive and contemplating take on bass music both original and versatile.

The second remix ‘Circles’, while again featuring Wends, utilises the vocals only sparingly, and instead encourages the listener to focus on a harmonically rich piano line and a thumping multi-timbral snare. Coupled with JFO’s distinct patois watermark and clattering hats, this track is a more transcendent psalm. Haunting and subtle yet highly musical in its essence.

Cid Poitier’s “Distraction” - released almost exactly two years ago on Sub:Clef - is unique to begin with, structured around Wends’ lyrics as in typical “band” music. JFO translates her piercing poetry into the DJ format without sacrificing the impact of the vocals. His rendition takes Cid Poitier’s minimal, jazz-flavored production to another level, adding texture and fullness to the poignant track.

Based in the creative melting pot of South London, Sub:Clef is a record label run by Cid Poitier which explores the blurred genre boundaries of early Dubstep, Neo Soul, Electronica and Dub.

Since its inception in 2017, the label has exclusively boasted releases from Cid himself, this all changes with the newest and fifth output.

It's a 4 track EP called N.O.T.E.S and features 2 tracks from Norwegian Dubstep legends Dubwoofa as well as 2 remixes of Cid's tracks by the incredible up and coming producer JFO.

UKBM are very happy to premiere one of those remixes for your listening pleasure. Entitled Circles, the track is haunting, subtle and highly musical. Combining gorgeous piano keys, a slightly off kilter break and a blissful bassline, this is an undeniably beautiful piece of music with a welcome touch of darkness.

Dubwoofa - Burn

After a bit of time away Norwegian producer Dubwoofa makes a storming return on the ever reliable Sub:Clef imprint with two new cuts of thundering weight. Hexed in particular is a muscular work-out in low end tension which is guaranteed to be snaking its way under many-a-dancefloor when it drops on March 5th.

The EP also comes correct with two JFO remixes of label boss Cid Poitier's finest and, for the collectors out there, the whole slab is available on a limited run lathe cut vinyl.

DJ'ing since 1997, Cid Poitier was Influenced by 90's Jamaican dancehall, but when Jungle broke onto the scene he found a new outlet for his musical passion. Since then he has taken the progressive journey into Drum and Bass, Early Dubstep and more recently Deep Minimal Experimental sounds which encompass his countless influences from the 90's and beyond. Cid Poitier's music is heavily inspired by these genres and the rich cultural melting pot that is South London.
