In late October last year, 19yr old Rhokshanna was stoned to death in Ghor Province in Afghanistan. Having been found guilty of adultery by the Taliban who control that area. She had run away with her boyfriend to marry him. His punishment - a lashing. Her horrifying death was captured on mobile phones & then relayed on news sites around the world. The brutal treatment of women around the world is sadly nothing new but even so, Rhokshanna's story deeply affected me, and feeling powerless to do anything else, I responded by writing this song to remember her.

This is a very old song out of the Yoruban & Santeria traditions - Nigeria, Cuba, & Brazil. I learned recently that it is about those who serve the Orisha Oshun (sometimes Osun) and the brass bracelets they wore that Oshun asked them to rattle. This somehow managed to be mistakenly interpreted and shared by myself and many others as “necklace of love,”  perhaps due to the devotees adoration of the Orisha.  Oshun embodies love and sexuality  and one of her elements is brass, which never rusts. One writer shares "To understand Osun is to know the intelligence, vitality, caring and nourishing abilities of womankind. Long-suffering, cheated, overlooked, and over-worked, but always committed to the survival of humanity. Besides signifying wealth, brass never rusts, it is eternal. In Osun, we have the embodiment of prosperity, love, beauty, elegance, sexuality and sensuality and a divinely sanctioned feminist.

Ide Were Were

"Solstice" is the title track from pianist Frank Kimbrough's new album, out November 25, 2016 on Pirouet Records. The album features acclaimed players and longtime musical companions, bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Jeff Hirshfield.

The track was composed by Maryanne de Prophetis, the composer/poet/lyricist who is also Kimbrough's life partner and constant inspiration.
