Keeping up a high rate of release but just as high level of quality, the Cinematic label turns to German DJ, producer and Exploration label boss Johannes Volk for its next EP, with a typically idiosyncratic remix from Greek dub techno man XDB.  Volk has been producing conceptual techno since 2006, debuting with a fine EP on the revered Axis label run by techno royalty Jeff Mills. Since then he has continued to evolve on labels like Steffi’s Dolly as well as his own vinyl only imprint, and does so once again on this release. 

Opening track Desert Labyrinth is built on a firm bed of rubbery kick drums and ticking percussion and is run through with sweet and serene Detroit pads that speak of the future. Some pristine melody work and a nagging, drone like bassline drags you deep down the rabbit hole. 

The same track gets remixed by XDB, someone with an increasingly high profile thanks to his deep and dubby drone techno labels like Sistrum, Echochord and Diamonds & Pearls. Here he does his trippy, hypnotic, long-form thing once again and elongates Desert Labyrinth into a rolling groove peppered with mildly manic melodies and dramatic pad patterns: it’s excellent stuff as ever from the Grecian. 

Next up Photon Sphere is a more broken, hiccupping beat with expertly defined percussion. It’s a jacking track that will make bodies move on the dancefloor but is far from just functional fodder thanks to the delicate way in which pads and synths are layered on top of each other to levitating effect. 

Charging Particles is a quick licked march through a darkened cosmos with curious chords, lashing FX and a firm focus on the future, as techno should always have. Deep and warm; heady yet propulsive it’s emotive techno for mind, body and soul.

As we close out the year at Cinematic we reflect on how Electronic music has evolved and come back around in a cyclical process where yesteryear trends become new again.

DJ’s and producers have been finding new ways to use analogue gear in the digital age adding some authenticity to the fold. It’s with pleasure we welcome US native Jared Wilson to feature in our next CINEMATICPOD.

Jared has been trailblazing the use of Acid sounds on his 7777 label for a good number of years and more recently has seen his raw slice of techno grace labels such as Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and Dolly.

The excellent Cinematic label charges into 2014 with a meaty new Various ArtistEP that features tracks by label head Soy Mustafa, acid man Jared Wilson, dub specialist XDB and relative newcomer City 2 City. 

Both Soy and City 2 City have previously appeared on a vinyl only sub label of Chez Damier’s Balance Recordings with essential house offerings and come up with the goods once again here. New Detroit hero Jared Wilson, meanwhile, has been making waves with his searing acid techno on labels like Skudge and Grecian XDB has long been a champion of deep, droning dub on labels like Echochord and Sistrum. 

Up first is the label head’s ‘Delphic Times’. The track is beautifully deep and 
spacious, meaning the subtle melodies have plenty of room in which to float 
about as slinky percussive lines undulate above bottomless drums. It’s a clean, atmospheric track that packs a seriously emotional punch before XDB’s ‘Violi’ comes over as a much more edgy and busy affair. Rooted in dark dubby chambers, impish little synth lines dart about like fire flies in the night and drag your attention with them. Purposeful but poised, it’s another serene and sublime concoction from one of the day’s most revered producers. 

On the flip, City 2 City aka gets extremely atmospheric on his sci-fi tinged and cosmically inclined deep house vision, ‘Way of Life’. Lush synths variously lash about like sheets of metal, but also get smeared across the whole face of the track as techno leaning percussion scurries along below. It’s moody, Detroit referencing stuff that brings classic Planet E material to mind before the EP is closed down in face melting, dancefloor destroying style by Jared Wilson. His rasping, frantic acid cut is a bristling brew of analogue lines, itchy hi hats and gurgling synths that will arrest the attention of any dancefloor. 

This stunning EP is an essential offering for fans of genuinely raw and emotive house music that showcases four very real talents at their absolute best.

Cinematic Recordings is proud to offer up a debut to accomplished live artist and organic sonic landscaper Edanticonf with its next EP.

Born Edoardo Zerbinati, Italian Edanticonf has been active since 2010, releasing journeying, evocative techno EPs and a fine full length on labels like M_REC LTD, Eclipsemusic and the much loved Silent Season label. 

EP opener ‘Siren’ is a clean and crisp, melodically rich and musically enchanting bit of prime Planet E era techno.  It’s a perfectly produced, widescreen bit of sound that places you right at the better as all sorts of celestial pads and melodies colour the expansive sonic skies above: as such it really is an experience and a journey. 

‘Mermaid’ is buried a little deeper, emerging from warm, rubbery drums to offer up trance-inducing chords that stream uninterrupted from start to finish. Nebulous melodies also swirl below, soothing mind, body and soul as they go and reminding you just how breath-taking techno can be in the right hands. 

Lastly comes ‘Syri¦üzo’, another spine tingling, head turning bit of supine techno that is riddled with rich and rounded melodies that glow like fire flies in a dark night sky.  Pads as harmonic, bliss and beautiful as this don’t come along too often, which is a shame, because the effect of them is truly mesmeric. 

With this EP, both Cinematic and Edanticonf continue in their mission to offer up classy techno sounds that work on your heart as much as your heel, and as such excel together as a result. 




Highway of Thoughts EP

EDANTICONF - HIGHWAY OF THOUGHTS EP

Following on from Edanticonf well-received "Highway of Thoughts EP" in January, Cinematic Recordings 2nd EP this year comes courtesy of the Tokyo-based duo, Fumihiro Hoshi and Tadac.

Arriving in 08 via Shin Nishimuras iconic Plus imprint, Fumihiro Hoshi has steadily proved to be an influential figure in Japans increasingly watched tech-house scene, while this 3-track EP marks Tadacs first major release. 

Earlier this year, after hearing Cinematic boss Soy Mustafa's Return Of Anunnaki EP, the Japanese duo approached the North London-based label with a handful of tracks they felt were creatively aligned. Despite a comprehensive schedule already in the pipeline, Soy promptly signed the duo up for an autumn release. 

Entropic and atmospheric, the EPs immersive title track contrasts the sensibilities of contemporary dub-techno against the deeper end of the late-90s techno scene via a wash of low-end pulses and ethereal trance overtones. 

Over on the flip, the tighter-coiled New Horizon and Beyond The Cloud continue to blur the lines between techno and deep house in a manner reminiscent of Kompakts early stylings and Donato Dozzys ongoing Voices From The Lake project.

CINEMATICPOD 019 - MR. STATIK

Now into their 10th release Cinematic further solidifies it's reputation as a prolific and forward thinking electronic record label with a showcase of heavyweight artists and remixes of the highest quality. With this release, label figurehead Soy Mustafa shares an esoteric vision for what can be best described as a zeitgeist: a shift in the collective consciousness leading away from the material and into the spiritual. In "Return of the Anunnaki" Soy expresses this sentiment with an atmospheric backdrop of ethereal melodies and incessant rhythms.

In the original mix, Soy joins the dots between broken 909 drums, epic pads and a pumping duo-phonic bassline that builds with emotion and creates a desolate experience that's withdrawn yet captivating.

More than a remix, John Tejada flips the script with a lighter, more uplifting interpretation. Using lush and dreamy builds, he creates a sense of optimism and a culmination of energies that when brought together create a melodious finale.

Rounding off the package, Berlin based Brendon Gregoriy aka Chymera goes all out with a gut wrenching, dubbed techno groove that pounds in its relentless approach adding a no nonsense mix that’s straight to the point.

Alex is back with his London home Cinematic Recordings - this time with a 4 track stormer!
North London Cutz EP is a homage to his inspirational North London neighborhood - where his infamous "Rhythm Tech" studio is based during the last couple of years  - and he got it just right! 
He delivers a phat 4-tracker with plenty of moods to choose from! 
On the A Side Bellawatt - a big room techno with a disco feel and a rumbling bassline on point with todays sound. A2 brings us “Ductile” introducing a jackin Chicago vibe with a more techno attitude on the beats and a pumping tribal groove on the subs. “THIS GOES OUT TO RON HARDY HE FROM CHICAGO” belches the spoken word….. funked up to the max!
On the Flip “Route 277” is a warm tech house affair with a dub mood and a strong banging hihat beat and the last joint goes deep and techy  with a hypnotic vocal and a haunting oriental melody, all summed up in a percussive jungle mood. 
Overall a very strong and DJ friendly release to stay in the box and a perfect follow up to Alex's latest releases on Arearemote, Cecille and Tuning Spork earlier this year!

Alex Celler - Bellawatt

In this ever changing dance music scene Kemistry is fast becoming synonymous with quality underground dance music.

The brainchild of Soy Mustafa and Alex Celler, the two met by chance through mutual friends at the infamous SAE recordings studios in London.
Coming from different musical backgrounds Kemistry have forged an undeniably signature sound ever evolving with no limitations with one thing for certain, music from the soul and aimed for the floors!

Alex already working with London’s legendary DJ Ariel for his Mydust record label, was given a taste of the cosmopolitan underground club scene in London which formed his musical taste in cutting edge dance music.
Born of Greek parents in Thessaloniki, Celler grew up in a musical environment and a nightclub owning family. In 2004 he moved in London for further studies on music production and audio engineering and graduated in April 2007.

Soy’s background is somewhat different, born of Turkish parents growing up in Tottenham, N.London his exposure to Turkish folklore and the multi cultural sounds of a predominantly black neighbourhood gave him a different taste in music from roots dancehall and reggae to a newer scene at the time which was jungle and hardcore.
Fast forward to 2004 Soy now as label head saw the launch of his record label
Shack Music, creating a niche for itself in quality underground dance music and finding support the world over! A regular on the DJ club circuit Soy flows seamless between House and Techno with emotion and a dancefloor in mind.

As we move into a busy period at Cinematic Label's HQ, we have had one mix on repeat bar none before publishing and that's from one of Detroits finest exports, Rolando Rocha aka DJ Rolando!
Rolando now residing in Edinburgh one of the most desirable towns in the UK, is a far cry from the raw urban surroundings in Detroit were he gave birth to the "Aztec Mystic" and "Knights Of The Jaguar" on the militant UR record label. Its noteworthy that since and never before UR set a precedent with its cult following to protect their heritage from the ensuing <a href="http://www.renegaderhythms.com/home.html?main=http://www.renegaderhythms.com/articles/ur/ur.html">battle with Sony.</a>
Rolando more than ever has gained plaudits for his style of melodic techno thats spiritual as it is relentless, entering into a new phase with his project "Crossroads" seeing him celebrate almost 20 years behind the wheels of steel. Rolando we are blessed!!

As we hit a new milestone in our podcast series this being our tenth, we held out on a man we have been bugging for a good minute to do our next mix. He obliged with one of the warmest organic mixes this side of the Amazon, our next landmark mix comes from Vince Watson.

One of the true UK Techno pioneers, Vince Watson produces cerebral thought provoking electronic music who has reached the hearts and minds of listeners and dancers worldwide.
The Scottish producer now re-located in Amsterdam has found a new zest for emotive sounds evident in his sixth album “Every Soul Needs A Guide” that sits between ambient and technological rhythms. This mix was recorded live in one piece, utilizing two Technics turntables, and a Dateq XTC mixer. For tracks that I don't have or that don't exist on vinyl, I used one of those silly, but handy, programs with vinyl control.

Next up on Cinematic is an EP from Fouqueray Jérôme aka Jerofu. Over the course of the last four years, the Frenchman has honed his own intricate, rhythmical vision of techno on labels like Verboten and Cascabel. On this Fiere Allure EP we find him in a comparatively deep and pensive mood, with three razor sharp remixes bolstering the package. 

The title track in its original form is alive with the pitter-patter of toms and feathery percussive lines. They weave their way in and out of tribal drums and make for an elongated, shadowy techno listen.  Portugal and Ovum’s Steve Parker tackles the first remix, cutting it up with searing thin synth lines and a layering in muted windy howl.  It’s prickly and edgy, to be sure. 

Jerofou’s other original, “Regard d’en Bas” is almost religious in its streaming hymnal chords and gentle progression. Serene and blissful, it shows techno’s more sensitive side off in a great light, and proves the Frenchman has a delicate melodic touch.  The Bleak remix is no such delicate affair; instead it’s made up of bold, ever so slightly decaying loops of barrelling techno a la Swedish experts Skudge.  Powerful stuff for sure.  

The final mix  comes from Ab Initio figurehead Sebastian San who forms a restless, itchy and skippy remix that’s only tethered to the ground by the sombre chords of the original.  Artful and expert in everyway, we’d like to think it’s another timeless package.
