We are super excited for our newest guest mix, Institution 058: Jake Flaherty (Toronto).

We have had the absolute pleasure of meeting Jake on more than one occasion. Awesome human. Jake is a joy to watch live. His smile is infectious, and his passion shows through in how he plays. We asked him a couple of questions:

Institution: Jake, who was your biggest influence, musically?
JF: My biggest influence is undoubtedly John Digweed. I've spent countless hours listening to his sets and I travel the world to see him as often as I can. He has taught me everything I know about what it means to properly program a set and the importance of trying to think several tracks ahead. He famously said "The most important thing is how you program and how you choose your records. That really does sort out who is a good DJ and who is just playing records," and that has really stuck with me. I try to live up to that as best as I can. 

Institution: What was your biggest career moment?
JF: My biggest career moment to date was playing a sold-out party at Coda on October 9, 2021. There was a lineup down the street by 10PM and the house was absolutely rocking by 10:30. I was opening and I knew that my job for the night was to warm things up - but I was able to open things up a bit at the end of my set. The house lights came up and I was able to finally see just how full the room was - and that's when all the hours I've spent on this hobby of mine all came together.

I am happy to share this recording with you. I played at Wohnzimmer floor from 22:00 until midnight. It was a magical night that I spent with  wonderful people, I received a lot of gifts of kindness. It was almost perfect. I was a huge glowing fluffy cloud of happiness on that night, and I just felt alive, floating and happy. Maybe you can hear it in the set. It was an absolute pleasure to start the year with my first all nighter ever in Amsterdam! The 6 hour set allowed me take a voyage through so many electronic sub-genres I love. From dreamy floaters to filthy progressive groovers, and from deep howlers to melodic euphoria: we danced the night away on it. Hope you’ll enjoy it too!

Our first international show was a wild success - closing out Sauna at Ritter Butzke with the @stilvortalent family was a dream come true! Berlin, you really know how to party, even at 7am you were still going strong and we felt like we could've kept playing for hours. And going back-to-back with @elifmusique at the end was a fun surprise, we love her music and sets and so it was a huge honor to share the decks with her!

Big thanks to @oliverkoletzki and the team at Stil Vor Talent as well as @ritter-butzke, it was wonderful to meet everyone and experience a true night out in Berlin for the first time. Can't wait for the next one!

I'm back after a year hiatus! The last 3+ years have been a real struggle. I've had an acute mental illness with 3 hospitalizations and lots of very scary times. I wouldn't have gotten through it without my supporting family and close network of friends. Mental illness is really difficult to describe unless you've been through it so it can be very isolating. Finding it difficult to confide in friends or family at times and getting cut off from the world. You just have to keep pushing through, go out and put on a brave face. I feel like I am over the worst of it and have my music mojo back! Electronic music was something I lost and have missed over the last 3 years but I got to appreciate other genres which genuinely kept me going. What the f##k would we do without music????!!!!! I really hope you love listening to this set as much as I loved putting it together, thanks to all the amazing artists for sharing their talent :)

3 QUESTIONS to MODEPLEX:

Q: Listening to your set shows a lot of young classics. The music isnt that old yet but it tells exactly your story. Tell us about your roots.

A: I started making Techno around 4 years ago. Before that I was really active in the Drum N Bass and Breakbeat scene. I guess it is still influencing me. I didn‘t had a specific plan when I was starting to make Techno. I was goofing around with my instruments and it really took a while till I got something cool. Than I was releasing something and got my very first support by Miss Melera. She played my tracks right from the beginning. But as it is always at the beginning, you do a lot false decisions and bullshit. I realized that I will stuck if there is no concept, story, philosophy or anything behind. So I started to think what I am actually doing and if is it good, and if not what can I change. So I slowly got a better feeling for the productions and finally I had my release „Pulsar“ in December 2017 on JEAHMON! which made the things start rolling.

Q: Your productions and releases already gave you the chance to play in countries such as India, Ukraine, Spain, Belgium or Russia. How would you describe your development and your place inside the scene?

A: I am still a super tiny newbie and I don‘t understand how everything works. It feels like I still have to learn one million things. Sometimes I feel so stupid when someone tells me: „Dave, you didn‘t know that“? And I am like: „Ammmm no“! But I guess that is normal. I would say, I don‘t have any specific place inside the scene yet. I am currently creating it! That is my development.

Q: Whats coming up next and which future projects are on the way?

A: I am currently working on my most personal and technically most advanced EP for already 5 months now. So yeah, that‘s one of my most biggest projects that will show up later this year. For now I am finishing a few collaboration tracks and I am touring a lot this summer. I am so looking forward to shows in Yerevan - Armenia, Cyprus, Hamburg, Berlin, India again and more to come.

Select Cuts 202: Amber Long (Live @ Virtual Burning Man)

Cinematique was found in the beginning of 2010 by Robin de Lange also known by some of his friends as the 'Manual Driver' for driving Manual Music artists around the country to their gigs. The label started as a Manual distribution label first and has become an official sister label of Manual Music since 1 January 2012.

Cinematique presents itselves as the widescreen of electronic music. It explores the boundaries from house to techno and everything in between. Cinematique offers a platform for open minded producers, known and unknown, who wants to spread their music into this universe. The label will have a strong focus on creativity, originality, danceability and diversity. 

Cinematique is sometimes edgy, sometimes dreamy, sometimes naughty, but never boring. Releases have been supported by the likes of James Holden, Hernan Cattaneo, Sasha, Nick Warren, Eelke Kleijn, Laurent Garnier, Orde Meikle, Dr. Motte and many more.
