Promising Young Woman (2020) - A Film Review - Episode 34

Some movies are made for sheer entertainment value, others for warming hearts and then there is Judas and the Black Messiah. A film meant to inform. This movie delivers a stellar ensemble cast led by Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Queen & Slim) as young Black Panthers party leader, Fred Hampton, and LaKeith Stanfield (Sorry to Bother You, Knives Out) as FBI informant, Bill O'Neal. As the runtime ticks, the tension and stakes increase among the characters as there can be only one way this ends...preventing the rise of a "messiah".

Judas and the Black Messiah (2021)- A Film Review - Episode 37

Netflix has a trend of making high budget action films (Extraction, 6 Underground, etc.) and it raised the question for us...why? Well, the answer is simple, people are watching them! In fact of the top 10 Netflix openings as of May 2021, over half are action films. The film we reviewed today breaks into that top 10, tied for 9th, Army of the Dead. Unfortunately, that is the only top 10 this Zack Snyder (300, Man of Steel, Justice League) film will be getting into in our opinion. Around every corner this film has plot holes, pacing issues, poor writing and the list goes on. There is a bright spot however, the ensemble cast led by Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Blade Runner 2049) does the best with the script they have and do at times provide performances that are worth watching. There is also a really cool technical achievement that you can find out more about by listening to the episode!

Fantasy Movie Draft - Year 2004 - Episode 41

Often successful "blockbuster" type films receive sequels, most of which were not originally intended to have sequels. This leads to the classic money grab follow up film that falls below all expectations. Given that John Krasinski (Write/Director of Part I) never intended to make another film, the setup was being molded for a dud of a film. However, in our humble opinion (& based on excellent RT scores), Part II rocks! It meets expectations and avoids the massive pit that consumes most sequels. We chat about the new elements we are introduced to from this dystopian world where silence is the difference between life and death.

DC Fandome - Episode 08

Alex Rivera Interview - The Art of Lensing - Episode 13

As 2020 comes to a close, along with Season 1 of Cine Vibes, we wanted to close things out on a high note. We couldn't think of a better way than by sitting down with "Guest of Honor" & "Snowbirds" writer/director, Justin Robinson. We discuss the influence basketball and his brother Jordan have had on his life and filmmaking career thus far. This includes an in depth conversation about completing his most personal project to date, a documentary about his late brother titled, "my brother jordan". Those close to him already know this, but we also discover that there is likely an Jrob original metaphor ready in the chamber to summarize most of his stories; like one of our favorites that he shared, "That cinematic crap we create is fertilizer for future projects."
