Dr Anna Hall - Introduction to Tim Noakes' Banting Diet

According to a new British study, People under 65 who eat a lot of meat, eggs and dairy are four times as likely to die from cancer or diabetes.

High levels of dietary animal protein in people under 65 years of age was linked to a fourfold increase in their risk of death from cancer ordiabetes, and almost double the risk of dying from any cause over an 18-year period, researchers found. However, nutrition experts have cautioned that it's too early to draw firm conclusions from the research.
 
The controversial study, focusing on the impact protein consumption has on longevity, throws doubt on the long-term safety of diets such as Atkins, Paleo and LCHF diets which are very high in animal proteins.

Portion control and not overeating are two vital issues to consider on the LCHF Diet. Sonja submitted her question via our website and she says that she is still struggling to get her portions sizes right on the LCHF diet.

She eats in the morning, generally skips lunch and then eats supper. She also does no not eat between meals.  Sonja is currently losing more or less 2 kg a week.  Is she on the right road?

Prof Noakes: That is brilliant Sonja! That is the sort of weight loss which is really good. How much you lose in the first 2 weeks tells you if you’re going to lose a lot of weight on the LCHF diet and losing 2 kilograms, that’s a lot.

The biggest loser on the LCHF diet
The best loser we have had lost 80kg in 27/28 weeks. So he was averaging about 3 kilograms a week. Most people lose about 1 or 1½ kg’s a week. So 2 kg’s is really good.

What that tells you Sonja is that your brain is working correctly. It is telling you the right number of calories to eat. Many women struggle to lose weight on the LCHF diet because their brain doesn’t quite get their portion sizes right, and they continue to over eat calories.

Overeating and Portion Sizes on the LCHF Diet: Are you in control?

On today’s Ask Prof Noakes Podcast we take a look at the ‘traditional’ thinking on nutrition that is being taught in schools currently as opposed to the one that describes the LCHF or Banting diet. We received an email from a concerned parent.

They are having a problem trying to explain the benefits of the Banting diet to their child.  She says their son has a teacher at school who is dead against the Banting way of life.  This child’s also had years of people telling him at school that, that he shouldn’t be eating fat because fat is bad for you.

Now the parents are giving him fat.  He’s a bit confused and this parent is trying to make things a bit easier to understand for the child who is 13 years old.  What’s the best way to explain the Banting of LCHF diet to kids?

Professor Tim Noakes: That’s a difficult one.  I think that, that the way I explain it, is knowledge changes.  When I give my talks and what I’ve written in Real Meal Revolution and elsewhere, is that we changed our diet in 1977. It changed on the basis of commercial reasons because big business wanted to promote grain sales in the United States of America.

Banting and Conventional thinking: What's changed with the LCHF Diet?

Last week, we spoke to Prof. Tim Noakes, on the eve of the Old Mutual Health Convention at the CTICC.
Noakes invited critics of the low carb, high fat diet (LCHF) to come along and challenge him and the other invited experts, but it appeared many critics snubbed the event. 
Noakes maintains that an excess amount of carbohydrates is behind many of the diseases of lifestyle so many people suffer from.
16 experts were invited to speak at the Old Mutual Health Convention, including Gary Taubes, Dr Andreas Eenfeldt, Dr Eric Westman, Christine Cronau, Dr Ann Childers, Jimmy Moore, Dr Jason Fung and Dr Robert Cywes.
The summit discussed the widespread increase of obesity and diabetes and how our traditional view on a low fat diet has influenced this.
A vocal critic of the ‘Banting’ movement is Jacques Rousseau, who attended the convention. He joined John to share his overall impressions of the event.
