Tales from the bilge 

Welcome to the deep blue sea. 

All life on our blue planet came from the sea. Scientists believe that over 4000 million years ago, a perfect soup of singled celled organisms was graced by the perfect amount of sunlight and slowly, very slowly over millions of years, through a process of combination, competition and most importantly symbiosis developed more complex organisms. Fast forward to this moment where YOU are simultaneously listening to ‘Tales from the Bilge’, processing the syntax on this page through reading, banking the information for the future, and hopefully being moved by this sensory experience while developing a deeper love and respect for the sea, the planet, and your fellow human and animal beings. 

You are the result of 4,000 millions of years of circumstances and chance that delivered you this specific moment, and it is whatever you wish it to be. I thank you for sharing it with me. 

In April 2018, I traversed the widest and deepest ocean in the world : The Pacific Ocean. I listened to the sea and saw the endless unseen wild wilderness that exists beyond the lands edge. For 23 days, this blue expanse filled my world to the horizon for 360 degreees, unbroken by land or any form in every direction — a continual eternity of nothingness and everythingness. 

The bones of this album were written in that space between it all, and brought me understanding and solace during this intense journey. 

We were three individuals on a 38-foot object floating in an ocean so big that when zoomed out on a map, we disappeared into an infinitesimal speck amidst an endless field of blue. As night fell and the billions of stars of the cosmos came into view overhead, the universal resolution became clear: 

We are small, however our combined impact is not. 

During our voyage, I saw more plastic than should ever be visible along a single path through what is the most remote wilderness in the world. We also witnessed massive mega trawlers in action hugging the international waters border and pillaging this natural wilderness like never before. Trawlers longer than 200 meters on multi-month voyages to fill the bellies of their freezers and feed the unchecked consumption of the East and West. 


Although the great forests of our planet create significant amounts of oxygen and our/my connection to land is stronger. The oceans were our mothers belly, where we all came from and they are the real lungs of the planet and a dominant force in the climatic cycles of our planet.

I had never sailed an iota before pushing off. Though a sublime adventure, the journey was also persistent monotony and brought mind-bending pattern breaking as I simultaneously gazed outward and inward. The sea’s great waves smashed up against the hulls and shores the shores of our minds as perpetual sleep deprivation took its toll. It is only once you whittle away all the fluff that you realise we are all doing the best we can. 


I hope this tale finds you well, my fellow voyager. Be gentle to the earth and to yourself; we are all learning how to sail for the first time on an ocean that can throw chaos at us at any moment. 
And if you have some extra bandwidth, please think of what you can do for your water kin.

Thirty two artists feature on the label’s first ever long-player, and in typical Aufect fashion, the future, not the past, is looked to with excitement and revelry. Founded by Patrik Cure in 2008, Aufect has maintained the same fiercely independent spirit over the past decade, representing artists of all statures and sounds. The label has consistently redefined itself and become known as a pioneering force. Starting off originally as an outlet for a group of friends to release records, the label’s vision expanded, as did it’s breadth of selection and roster. Featuring early releases from visionary producers like Mark Instinct, XI, Bombaman, Philthkids, HxdB, Patrik Cure and many others. As the label progressed, as did the sounds being offered, closely matching the latter two’s own divergent musical paths, eventually forming the group, GREAZUS. Fast forward to 2018 and Aufect stands tall among it’s peers, championing their own brand of Bass music. This album is a testament to the dedication and love that GREAZUS brings to every facet of their purview. The artists featured, like all of the other alumni, are stirling examples of the exciting movements being made in underground dance music.
Over the album’s 28 songs, it offers a huge spectrum of Bass music at various tempos. A handful of highlights include CRIMES!’ “Drip”, offering moody but uplifting boom bap vibes. Doctor Jeep’s “Titan”, lurches forward with an eerily unceasing bassline and hypnotic percussion. OAKK and Shiny Things team up on the certifiable dancefloor damager, “Holla” with it’s infectious hook and clever, yet subtle composition. DJ Madd remixes Subreachers’ “Pistol Grip” with his signature swagger and precision, creating a memorable hook. Meanwhile, Fixate dismantles Doctor Jeep’s “Laff Trak” to bare-bones rhythms, with a towering, wobbling, detuned bassline. Pigeon Hole and Sister
Mary bring us their punishing “MF Ruckus”, flawlessly combining elements of Hip Hop and Jungle, to bring said ruckus. Label bosses, GREAZUS, link up with their frequent collaborator and Detroit native, Sinistarr for an electrifying Jungle rinse out with flavours of the Motor City. HomeSick’s cut “Inna Dis” goes straight for the jugular with rapid fire staccato percussion and icy vocal edits, atop heavy bass punctuations. HUSKIE impresses with wavy vibes on “idk” using a catchy arpeggiation and pitch-bent sub bass swells. Veteran producer, Stranjah keeps it simple but effective, on “Busy Signal” which detunes the lead synth into a mangled symphony of bass and beats.

It was a November to remember, when life got relentless.

I wrote these tunes shortly after an eye-opening experience - a severe allergic reaction that's never been so severe. I ironically titled one of the tunes "November to Remember". Ironic cuz when I went to open up the project a month later, I had no recollection of ever writing it. Amnesia.

The part I'm missing from the story is that somewhere in there, I got into a car accident and got a serious head injury. Traumatic Brain Injury and Whip Lash. I'm 4 months in and I still have a ways to go.

The brain is such a peculiar thing. We need it to be able to do almost anything, but after having lived through this injury, I've come to understand consciousness a little bit better.

Every thought and perception triggers the brain to release chemicals based on our environment/experience. Those chemicals produce trains of thoughts. We are not our thoughts. We have some control over those thoughts and how to react to them, but they do not define who we are. Think about that for a second.. or perhaps - don't.. If you truly were your thoughts, you'd be able to stop your thoughts on a dime.. Right? 
The Self is higher. It's the one that you live up to, to serve your purpose.

Patience, above all else. 
Persistence, is next.

A circadian rhythm is a day in the life of all earthlings, the predictable fluctuations of our physical, behavioral and/or mental states over the course of a roughly 24-hour period as influenced by sunlight and temperature. With this concept as the title of JPOD's second full-length, one can see the clear yin-yang to this album, all of the acoustic instrumentation blending in so organically with digital sound craft that the seams are practically invisible, swirls of black and white in balance.

"To the Light" takes you up, with its emotive vocal lines and strummed guitars effervescently supporting a slick downtempo beat, gliding directly into "Midnight Oil," with its fat brass, echoed piano, and staccato vocal snippets lending it a touch of darkness. Later on, tracks like "Moonlit" and "Till Dawn" also seem to interpret the album title, but the theme isn't so rigidly literal as it is interpretively implied. Circadian Rhythms is not an album drowning in messages so much as it creates a feeling, a sense of rounding into form and being in the pocket, of hitting one's proverbial peak and aging gracefully.

JPOD's debut full-length Halfsteppin strutted out confidently in 2012, but a lot of life has been lived since then. In many ways, he is the same old beat chef we always knew, a staple at Bass Coast and Shambhala, frequent collaborator with Stickybuds as the StickyPod Connection, and ace producer of the tastiest womp gland-tickling bass music. Yet, he has clearly matured, both as a producer and as a young parent. Circadian Rhythms continues the trajectory outlined on his Taking a Deep Breath EP from 2014, a move towards more sophisticated song-writing and polished production, incorporating his worldly backpacker influences and peak time main stage aesthetic into a style that reflects the total sum of his age and experience. As such, his sophomore album pulses with a fatherly feeling of deep caring and quiet strength.

From his turntablist origins to his mastery of Ableton, the progress charted in the seven years between albums is obvious. Where he was once consistently over-the-top in quirky glitch-hop funk, JPOD now demonstrates unimaginable depth in stunning subtlety, with fifteen mid-tempo jams that feel lovingly nurtured rather than slightly imposed. Make no mistake, he still brings the party, but he hits you in the feels too, delivering as much in the way of mood-drenched meditations for headphones as rib rumblers for the twilight hours. Although that Spoonbill-esque good natured, trip tweaked, mutant funktronica freak fest style is still apparent on "Right Now," Circadian Rhythms generally relaxes into a warm vibe that is all JPOD's own.

Suffice to say, there ain't no halfsteppin' on this album. Circadian Rhythms is a long, confident stride towards ultimate perfection. Enjoy the trip!

Circuit Bent were manufactured inside the bowels of a top secret laboratory for the purpose of being super soldiers hell bent on world domination. After the mad scientists realized the true nature of the monsters they had created they tried to destroy the foul creatures they had spawned but were overwhelmed by the sonic insanity and bled to death from their ears. To this day the location of Circuit Bent is unknown, but their presence on the internet is evidence that the world is still not safe from the global menace lurking around the corner.
