The first relese to kick off Clubwerks, Origami Sound's imprint dedicated to distinctive, genre-free club material is by a 19 year old French prodigy who grew up in Manchester and is currently studying Jazz Performance at the prestigious Julliard University in NYC - JAONA, one of the most exciting producers to join our crew of hugely gifted new talent. 

The difference between average producers and great ones consists in knowing how to arrange melodic and rhythmic stimuli in extraordinary ways; our boy JAONA is a champion at conjuring the most refined sensorial scenery inside each of his tracks and have fun with it too. All the music on this EP is entirely stand-alone, furiously creative and catchy in the most subtle ways. 

This mini-album should be more than enough to get an idea of what Clubwerks is about.

“Following on from zorenLo’s excursion, Hedchef steps into the spotlight, brandishing his relentless and neurotic style of production, ready to chop things up. Hailing from Oxford and having a founding involvement with the Deep Cover crew, he’s cut his teeth on the darker side of one of the city’s (literally) underground venues, The Cellar. The team regularly run nights hosting a wide variety of styles and genres, so it should be no surprise that this 3 track, bass-driven techno offering is anything but conventional.

First out of the lab is ‘Cry Havoc’, probed by percussive elements and building on a muted acidic platform, it cries out in pain as it’s torn apart by its own momentum, only to be recalibrated by a 4 to the floor reprise right before it crumbles apart.

Stepping off from the disjointed neurological trauma, ‘MRI’ serves to magnetically scan in your brain functions before collating its data into a cold, rigid diagnosis: ‘more kick drums’. Simultaneously serving up the prescription, it reaches deep into the formulaic cortex of techno and pulls forth unexpected rhythmic stammers and off-beat metallic crashes, reminiscent of industrial production and warehouse nights.

Bringing up the final stage of this mind altering experiment is ‘Shock Generator’. Galvanized percussion cuts precisely through an outer layer of ambience to reveal the mechanical workings of a paranoid dance robot. After years of acute psychological dystrophy, he still can’t shake the feeling of dread from hearing that Hedchef release in the club.”
