Pioneering UK electronic artist Paul Davis, aka Circulation, makes a welcome return to the scene with the launch of his Recirculate label. 

From debuting in 1998 to disbanding in 2007, Circulation (which back then included erstwhile partner Matt Jackson) was a prominent act regularly seen on flyers for clubs like fabric and festivals like Creamfields and Sonar. The pair toured the world alongside putting out an iconic series of colour-related dance floor bangers from Green through to Opal. There were more than 45 EPs in all, mostly on their own label, and all of them were timeless outings that have more than endured with those who know. Now, after years in the shadows, Davis is back as Circulation, refinding his mojo during a global pandemic. 

His first release for 15 years came out last October via Argentinian label Electronic Groove. It proved his music has noticeably matured from his days as part of the original duo; the sound is less impulsive, the tracks drawn out, almost languid, but without removing their foot from the dance floor. Says Davis, "After writing over forty-five 12 inch releases and two albums under the Circulation name from 1997 to 2007, and after stopping for ten years, I recently started writing again under the Circulation moniker. It feels great to be back producing and recirculating with a project that has meant so much to me over the years.“ 

That plays out right from the off with '990', an 11-minute trip through elastic bass and glitchy hits built on heavy, dubby drums. The hugely atmospheric track slowly but surely gets you into a state of hypnosis with subtle synths adding a grand scale. The excellent 'Happen' is more driving and upbeat but still as hugely spacious. 

The incessant drums roll beneath swirling pads and organic percussion that all work to lock you into the compelling groove. Finally, 'HA2' is another perfectly paced jaunt through yawning chords and slowly percolating drums. It feels like being trapped in an electronic daydream with shards of light and the occasional human voice puncturing the reverie. 

He may well have been away a while, but expect to hear much more of Davis over the coming year as he is now fully back in Circulation.

Those who dig deep into the history of house and techno are well familiar with Circulation - which back then included erstwhile partner Matt Jackson alongside Paul Davis. It was a seminal duo who, from 1998 onwards, put out more than 45 timeless EPs on their self-titled label, toured the world, and headlined at places like Sonar and fabric. The pair went their separate ways in 2007, but now Davis is back with renewed energy, having spent much of the pandemic year falling back in love with making music. As such, he has launched his own new label and has a wealth of new material ready to go in 2021.

This EP again showcases how the producer's sound has matured and evolved, with more of a focus on long-form electronic trips but still an earnest devotion to the dancefloor. It opens with 'Judge' (3am Mix), a sublime ten-minute excursion into the cosmos. The tense, tight drums bring a sense of urgency as the vast pads arch way up above. There is both lightness and dark, beauty and intensity in this track, making it all the more appealing.

Things pick up even more for the pounding 'Judge,' which is high-class body music with sustained pads keeping you on edge and knotted bass bringing serious weight beneath the crisp, snappy drums. 'United State' has a buoyant groove built on smooth drum loops with chords that suspend you in mid-air. The arrival of some beautifully twinkling keys adds to the cleansing and overall cathartic effect. The excellent 'Crunchie' closes down with exquisite synth designs unfolding like a starry night sky over a heavy and rolling dub techno rhythm.

Circulation’s return is hugely welcome as the artist once again brings class and authenticity to his ever-excellent sounds.

Circulation's triumphant return to the scene continues with another blistering three-tracker on his freshly minted Recirculate label.

For nine exceptional years after first emerging in 1998, UK electronic artist Paul Davis was a true underground pioneer. He released 45 cult EPs as Circulation with former partner Matt Jackson and headlined clubs like fabric and major festivals around the world. This spring, after falling back in love with music during the pandemic, he returned to the scene with a pair of new EPs. Each one showed he has noticeably matured from his early days but can still nail a sweet dance floor groove.

This EP opens up with 'Algodonales Blue Sky,' an exquisite 12-minute dub techno opus. Constantly bubbling bass and elastic grooves trap you in the moment, and a world of sound effects, rich cosmic
designs and heady motifs all detail the groove in subtle but subversive fashion. There is more air and light in the playful 'Diskotec,' with its rich harmonica patterns, churning drums and uplifting melodies.

It's a track to swell the heart and raise the spirits before the excellent closer 'Chord.' This one rolls deep on a cuddly and dubby house groove. Melancholic pads leave long tails in their wake, and soft shakers and hymnal chords add to the meditative effects. Thoughtful and dynamic, this is another timeless EP from Circulation.

Already working on vocal tracks with various singers (among them Ricky Bar-row, formerly of The Aloof), his music has noticeably matured from his days as part of of the original duo; the sound is less impulsive, the tracks drawn out (almost languid) but without removing their foot from the dancefloor power. He may well have been away awhile but expect to hear much more of Davis over the coming year: now fully back in Circulation.
