Emerging from the confines of the underground, Shadow Pressings returns with a brand-new slab of raw wax—four cuts of stripped-back, analog-driven house music from an unknown artist whose identity remains in the shadows. True to the label’s ethos, this release channels the spirit of Chicago basements and Detroit lofts, where swing, grit, and soul collide beneath the glow of a red light.
Side A opens with ‘Trentsetter’, a deep and muscular statement piece. Built around a weighty low end and fat synth stabs, it rolls with confident restraint—equal parts hypnotic and heavy. ‘Unreleased Slices’ takes things back to the early sampler era, when the chopped and replayed vocal melody craze was born. Crunchy, looping, and unapologetically raw, it’s a love letter to the equipment limitations that sparked a movement.
Flip over to Side B and you’ll find ‘Dreamed Up Ecstasy’, a deeper excursion where chiming synth melodies drift above perfectly saturated drums. Emotive yet functional and shimmering with a sense of hedonistic abandon this one creates just the right after hours vibe. Closing the record, ‘Am I‘ dives even further into the deep. Classic M1 organ gives a nod to the ‘90s, while a spoken phrase and chopped vocal textures provide a hook that lingers long after the needle lifts.

‘Echoes From Mamori’ was originally commissioned by my friend Adnan Yildiz who was curating a show called There Is No Audience in Montehermoso, Spain in 2009. They wanted to have a theme song running on loop in the exhibition space. I’d just been in the Amazon recording sounds for the Darwin theatre piece with Hotel Pro Forma and thought it could be fun to make something dancey with the animal sounds I’d collected. The track features frogs that sound like birds, fed into my sampler and played on a keyboard, resulting in fun arpeggios and melodies. I think it might also feature some birds I recorded in the forests around Berlin. ‘Echoes In Mamori” was only made available as a CD handed out at the exhibition so it's nice to see it finally get a proper release via Rabid Records.

The uber-talented Romanian DJ and producer Mihai Popovicu is considered one of the most innovative eastern European producers of electronic music today and finally returns to Poker Flat Recordings once again. 

Continuing his rich vein of form into 2019, the Understand EP drops soon after his collaboration with James Dexter, and once again shows why he's well worth getting excited about. 

First up on this release is 'Inside Me', which underlines Popoviciu's perfect understanding of how to create rich and thick grooves from a minimum of sources. The track bumps and rolls, helped along by a deep, evolving bass lead that will undoubtedly get rinsed all over the summer. 

Similarly, 'Understand' keeps the vibe - a heavy tech house hitter with some classic feeling stabs and nice vocal snippets.
