Nobody Cares

'When reading the comments under Georg Levin’s songs and videos you immediately sense a certain longing for new output. There is always someone wishing for a comeback of the producer and songwriter. For good reason: after all, Georg didn’t release any music under his name for over 10 years. This is almost surprising as he has been an integral part of Berlin’s music scene since the beginning of the 2000s and had significant impact reaching far beyond the local musical landscape in the course of the decade.

Georg grew up near Hamburg, Germany, playing keys and saxophone in local bands. Despite his ambitions to become a songwriter/producer he didn’t feel ready at the time so he studied communications at Goldsmiths College in London, had different jobs at film production companies and at MTV. He finally becomes serious with music after meeting DJ Dixon who co-produces his first single 'When I’m With You' and the house classic '(I got) Somebody New' in 2002. Several remixes and collaborations with artists like Masters At Work, Jazzanova, Âme, Robert Owens, Felix Buxton from Basement Jaxx or Peter Kruder from Kruder & Dorfmeister follow as well as the LPs 'Can’t Hold Back' (2003 Sonar Kollektiv), 'Take It Personal' (2007 Four Music) under his and Dixon’s 'Wahoo' moniker and 'Everything Must Change' (2010 BBE).

It gets quiet around Georg Levin in the following years. Still playing the occasional gig or festival around Europe with his live band, he focusses on his music production company playdis.tv . In 2020 he finally releases the singles 'Echoes' and 'Fall into a dream' that quickly reach millions of streams and which give an indication to where he now continues with 'It Was Fun For A While'.

You can find Georg’s music filed under Electro, Soul, Pop or House at the record shop. His music has been described as 'Blue Eyed Soul', 'Future Soul' or even 'Yacht Rock'. But in the end of the day, his music is not about recreating the past .

When listening to 'It Was Fun For A While', you hear references to the early 80s - a time of upheaval where RnB, Disco and New Wave had a brief episode together - but instead of entering the time machine back to that era, both music and lyrics play with a rather abstract nostalgia. An attempt to capture a fleeting but intense feeling, a longing to an unlived past, a fading memory that made it to the here and now. It is, after all, a modern song.

With an infectious groove, elegantly crafted production plus Georg’s smooth vocals supported by Simonne Jones and Amely, „It Was Fun For A While“ is that kind of song that you want to hear in the car, at home and on the dance floor.

Late Night Tales welcomes back the cult figure and ultimate musical connoisseur, Bill Brewster to compile his second episode of the curated compilation series ‘After Dark’. An obscure and timeless DJ­led journey which begins somewhere out in the near ocean, the waves are rolling and lolling gently into the shore, while a full moon shines on the surface. It’s only faint, but somewhere nearby is the sound of bass, pulsing slowly, almost in time to the waves. Welcome back to ‘After Dark: Nightshift’.

Once again Bill Brewster comes armed with a sensitivity and sense of occasion that few other DJs possess. Delivering another batch of slow cooked musical stews, making sure the tempo stays nice and steady and the emphasis is on funk, soul, grits and corn fried chicken, Brewster has done so much digging, Late Night Tales had to hire a forklift truck and tractor. Among the unreleased nuggets, there’s the Fernando mix of The Detachments; inordinate excitement about Gino Fontaine, a tune spotted a year ago but has languished in Andy Meecham’s Stafford catacombs ever since. Also unearthed are some hitherto secret recordings between Robert Fripp and The Grid, and there are also some proper club faves here, too, like the daft but brilliant ‘Mopedbart’ by Hubbabubbaklubb and the luminous ‘Boutade’ by Mugwump, as well as killer oldies like Salsoul Invention and General Lee.

Late Night Tales invites the world’s best artists to delve deep into their music collections to create the ultimate "late night” selection. The series features expertly curated mixes by MGMT, Friendly Fires, The Flaming Lips, Metronomy, Groove Armada, The Cinematic Orchestra, Four Tet, Belle & Sebastian, Jamiroquai, Midlake, Arctic Monkeys and many more to artists. After Dark is its quirky and mischievous sibling, born in 2013 with a critically ­acclaimed debut speared by Bill Brewster, its a timeless journey into the history of the dancefloor. Originally a chef, a football pundit (co­editor of fanzine When Saturday Comes) and record collector, Bill began DJing in in the late 80s, but he cut his teeth playing Low Life warehouse parties in Harlem and the East Village and anyone hearing Bill today can see how these New York ‘roots’ shine through. For eclecticism, surprises, amazing unique music and sheer long­haul dedication to the dance­floor; Bill’s your man. So, put your glad rags on, the glittery boots with the worrying heels, and some sparkly make­up. Girls, you can wear what you like. Hold on to the rails, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Photay and Sam O.B. collide once again for the second of two EPs this year under the moniker Ensemble Entendu. Pastoral Dusk Themes EP evokes images deep and rolling. Lead off ‘Hully Bully’ portrays a nighttime landscape turned into electric jelly jiggling to the beat of forlorn drums. Ensemble Entendu’s take on library music here expands to include the stoic cumbia inflections of ‘Ritmo Antiguo’ and the fourth world ambient reflections of ‘Loon Interlude’ and ‘Mascoma.’ Each track brings a palpable imagined geography, a space within which to think and feel emergent states of departure. ‘Lakeview’ finishes the release with a colorful, astral spaciousness, something like aurora borealis converted into synthesized sound.

Ensemble Entendu began as a collaborative project of Photay and Sam O.B. They set out exploring library music and the tradition of rhythm tracks, emphasizing driving drums and basslines in their stripped down productions. The Brooklyn-based producers are now shaping a music uniquely situated between their already unique solo artistic voices.

Populous, aka Andrea Mangia, DJ and producer hailing from Lecce, in Southern Italy, is excited to announce his new album “W,” due out May 22nd with tastemaker imprint Wonderwheel Recordings. The new album “W," for women, is Populous’ tribute to free and diverse feminine musical imagery. Inspired by women who sing, write, compose and play and for Populous are both icons and friends, hai from Italy, Japan, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. “W” is also a celebration of femininity beyond stereotypes, less defined by gender rather a common uniqueness that is the perfect response to the uniformity imposed by the machismo still reigning in the music industry. With the new album, Populous has opened up about his queer identity, making his first queer-identifying musical statement. From songs to artwork, he has created a visual manifesto to present feminine musical imagery. The artwork was conceived together with Nicola Napoli (a digital artist in Berlin’s queer scene) it is, in Populous’ own words, the representation of “a utopian party we would have done anything to be invited to.” An eclectic crossover party, improbable yet coherent, where you’d meet Grace Jones and Missy Elliott, Loredana Bertè and RuPaul, Aaliyha and Amanda Lear, Beth Ditto and Divine while dancing to shamanic house, digital cumbia, vogue beat and glitch electronica. Populous is accompanied on each track by the independent artists he admires most: Sobrenadar, Kaleema, Sotomayor, Emmanuelle, Barda, Weste, Cuushe and the Italian M¥SS KETA, L I M, Matilde Davoli and Lucia Manca. Collaborations born of discovering one’s sexual freedom, from perpetual motion, from constant traveling, physical and musical. With a background in musicology, Populous is known for his global approach to music-making. He has always been interested in disparate genres and styles of music, which is reflected in the output from the Populous project and its focus on Latin American sounds as refracted through a European lens. In 2003, Mangia made his first jaunt into the music world with the album ‘Quipo’ (via Morr Music), followed by ‘Queue For Love’ in 2005. Influenced by his reggae/hip-hop-infused surroundings (Lecce is known as Italy’s Jamaica, as reggae and dancehall are extremely popular there) he released ‘Drawn in Basic’ in 2008, which was well received by international critics, earning him a spot on the global dance music map. The 2010s have seen Mangia refine the Populous sound with albums like ‘Night Safari’ (Bad Panda Records) and ‘Azulejos’ (Wonderwheel Recordings), while also expanding his role as a sound designer for fashion houses such as Gucci, Vivienne Westwood, Isabel Marant, and Elie Saab, among others. ‘W’ releases on Wonderwheel Recordings May 22nd.
