Opening with the Vangelis inspired Present Voyage then weaving a path through gritty throbbing bass, exemplified by Arrival and on to minimized funk of Disco Diva and Need House, Sonic Intervention progresses naturally on through the swirling tension of Get Up and crescendos with the combination of floor-burner NZT and the old-school Electro stomping Electric Pandemic; featuring the vocals of Detroit Grand Pubas Paris Du Black Fu. When quizzed on his motivations behind his latest studio album, The Advent stated I wanted to do something quite personal for this first album and delve a little bit into the past to get inspiration from my influences to make an album that reflected all the musical genres I have been inspired by over the years electro, electronica, tech house - not just the techno tracks. Future music from a past master, made for the here and now.

Donor - Identity Revealed

My label Stockholm LTD turned 15 recently, so I decided it was time for a little celebration. I'm happy and grateful for the past, and I can’t wait to see what will happen next. Here's how it all started: 

Södermalm, Stockholm 1999. The capacity of the store was probably less than 20. The cold and industrial-tinged interior featured ash grey walls, rust-free steel accents, and a magnificently elevated cashier desk. The ceiling was an impressive 3.5 meters with two massive speakers hanging above the cashier. Shelves and bins stocked with vinyl, tapes, and magazines covered the walls. In the storefront, you would find the listening stations with turntables that sit nicely inside their desks. While you listened to the week’s new releases, you’d be treated to a view of the blooming streets of Södermalm as people rushed by. There was a small sign with operating hours in the window which also said “TECHNO / ELECTRO. Welcome to Illegal Stockholm!” 

Illegal Stockholm was founded by Tobias Von Hofsten and myself in late 1998. It became our home, blood, sweat, and tears for a good 4-5 years. I was only 18 years old at the time and still in school when we opened its doors. I couldn’t think of anything cooler or more fun than hanging out, talking and listening to music all day and night. After we closed the shop at night. We would hang in the ‘office’ which was the store’s back room. I forged life life-long friendships and gave birth to the idea of Stockholm LTD. I wanted to show people a slightly different side of our scene. The original idea was to keep the recording artist secret with no names announced on the release, but the idea fell flat as people figured it out the day of our first release. Since then, the concept of the label has changed a few times but the core idea and desire remains the same: releasing timeless electronic music. 

Stockholm LTD has stood the test of time, it’s not that many labels that stay current for that long. This is only possible with the help of all the artists I’ve been working with over the years. To say I am extremely grateful is an understatement! 

With this in mind, let’s celebrate the label’s 15th anniversary with a 5 part release! 15Y contains remixes by some of my favorite artists at the moment. They have all picked and reworked something from my part of the label’s back catalog. The series will stretch out over a set of 5 vinyl singles with a special anniversary sleeve and a beautiful engraving made by graphic designer Håkan Ullberg.

We have the honour to welcome the Dublin based Doug Cooney.

Doug Cooney drops his EP, Claim A Wake on Eternal Friction Records, containing three original tracks and a remix by no other artist than Jon Hester. 

The result is a powerful EP, that clearly demonstrates Doug’s unique and personal approach to contemporary techno. 

The balance between the rolling drums and the uplifting percussion are capable of bringing listeners into a certain state of mind. The warm and melodic synths fit perfectly into many layers of each track. 

Although these tracks are all fairly different from each other, they are all produced in the same effective and delicate style. They make for an interesting EP, reason enough to follow this promising artist every move from now on.

Brothers Black is the eponymous label project from the Berlin based artist duo Edward Antonio & James Sison.

The fourth vinyl only release welcomes another VA package with their own music alongside Magna Pia who is one half of the Cassegrain crew, Sweden’s Sandra Mosh, as well as Miller & Keane that consists of Dave Miller from Abstract Division with Damian Keane.

Sandra Mosh‘s presence continues to steadily grow having featured on labels like Mary Go Wild Black, Northallsen, TMMR, and of course her own MOSH Musik imprint.

For this DT:Premiere we selected her track “Paimon” that introduces a looming, pulsing modular hook over a raw, analogue funk. Oozing with energy, precision and character, the textures thicken up with intensity and hypnotic power ready for tearing up dance floors and minds alike.

It was back whilst living in the city of Aalborg that Neri J’s love for music exploded into existence. A chance encounter with the local student radio station - laden with a sprawling expanse of microphones and DJ equipment - piqued her interest, subsequently leading her into her own weekly radio slot with that very same friend who introduced her (“shout out Robert!”). Yet it was upon visiting Berlin for the first time her awareness and ensuing love of tough, heavyweight techno was born, and within just two years, in 2017, she landed her first Berlin gig at that very same club that catapulted her into her passion originally: Tresor. Since those fledgling days, Nerija now resides in Copenhagen, playing a pivotal role in the spectacular rise of the Danish venue Ved Siden Af, which she has been a resident of since its formative days. Following her raging, primal set at UNFOLD alongside the other Ved Siden Af residents, we spoke to her about European music culture, her own event series Vortex, and what makes a great party.
 
Hi Neri! Thanks for joining us. What led you to landing your residency with Ved Siden Af?  
Probably that we had the same passion and vision for the music; I’ve been with Ved Siden Af for most of its existence. Before then, we had Et Andet Sted, the first original DYI club where the whole scene felt at home. It was a legendary place!
 
How has the Copenhagen techno scene developed since you first became part of it?  
I think the scene has developed a lot since I became a part of it. Now it’s known internationally. The Danish techno scene is known as a thing. There’s a lot of attention around it and I’d say that it’s well deserved.
 
Tell us about your own party series, Vortex. What is the concept behind the brand and who have you enjoyed inviting to the events?
 There’s two of us running it – my friend Indre Maria and I have been overseeing Vortex for a few years now. It’s a party where we are not afraid to challenge dancers with harder and faster sounds. Genres are all melted and blended together – it’s a proper hard dance party. We focus on inviting new, fresh and upcoming artists. Recently we have had some really promising names: Araknyl and Omniself from the Bodycount label in Sweden, DJ LOOSER, and Accelerationism from Ute club in Norway.
 
Do you have any other creative outlets that you like to immerse yourself in?
 Gardening! I consider it such a creative, calming activity. It’s always helped me to find peace of mind when I’ve felt uneasy or doubtful about my career. It’s the best therapy I’ve tried.
 
 What parallels have you found between FOLD and Copenhagen venues?
 People respect both the venue and each other – FOLD and the Copenhagen crowds know how to behave, respect and assist each other if needed.
 
How did you approach your evening slot of your UNFOLD appearance? Were there any particular tracks that you really enjoyed playing in the booth? 
 I couldn’t wait to rave together with the dancers. I really enjoyed the whole playlist but one special moment was playing Nils vs Miss Tracy – Megablast. That’s how I felt during my entire two hour set. It was a megablast! I was super surprised when I arrived and saw the DJ setup in the middle of the room. It was a super positive, intense experience to be surrounded by passionate dancers. It made me feel as though we were one organism, all moving to the same rhythm. Some moments I caught myself just dancing and forgetting about the main mission!
 
What do you think is the most important thing when putting on a great party? 
 It’s a combination of various things. The energy you choose via the lineup is key, but other elements that are crucial are the location, promotion, soundsystem and crowd. It’s like a recipe that you need to experiment with a few times in order to bake a perfect party.
 
Any projects that you’re focusing on in 2020? 
 I’m really looking forward to releasing new music which is due in the very near future; finishing my EP!

UK based Arnaud Le Texier returns to Soma with yet another hard hitting, warping release entitled Mystery Picker. A regular on the global Techno scene, Arnaud’s productions are densely packed and built with attitude. 

Collisions opens the EP at full pace as modulating synths gather momentum, building in intensity with every step. Mystery steps up next, another energy packed affair that doesn’t pull any punches as its hypnotic elements, paired with hammering percussion deliver a hard, driving track. Picker slows things down momentarily but doesn’t drop out on intensity. Constantly modulating and warped synths dominate this more hypnotic track. Parallel Razor closes out with more aggressive elements taking the forefront. Distorted and dark and packed full of jarring and dynamic rhythms, this is a perfect closing track from one of the UK’s undoubted talents.

Advent – A coming, or an arrival, a coming into being or use. 

Quite an appropriate name for Cisco Ferreira, a man who has played a big part in the creation and development of Techno from the very beginning of this genre’s history. Indeed, his Techno CV is the stuff of legend. Cisco was producing Techno and performing live Techno shows years before the rest of the world had even heard of the genre. He released his first track in 1988, was a pioneer of the Live PA (or Live Public Address – performing Techno live in front of an audience using electronic music gear), and, if all that wasn’t enough, he even worked as the sound engineer on some of Derrick May’s, Adonis & Fingers Inc’s recording sessions! 

The list goes on, and so does Cisco. Unlike other Techno pioneers from the early years, Cisco continues to produce with as much passion and frequency as he did back in the day. His releases on Labels Like Tresor, Rotation, Electrix, Kanzleramt, Dj Gigolos, Pure Plastic, Synewave plus many more is just another example of his ongoing pursuit to keep making music and pushing Techno to new boundaries. 

Cisco was born to Portuguese parents on the island of Madeira (Portugal). His family moved to London (1975) when he was five years old, setting the stage for his musical career. While at Paddington College (1986) in West London, he studied sound engineering and secured a job after graduation as an assistant sound engineer at ZOLOU Then later WALL Studios.  

At this period is when he really started to learn about Sound & Production, his 1st main recording sessions as an engineer were rock & “Inde” based bands & the studio owners being in successful rock bands. Matt Dangerfield & John Payne “ASIA” this 1st step was a start in learning about balancing & mixing down the rock way, which had a lot of intense & Raw energy especially on drums & Guitars.. 

Other bands Cisco did sessions for: P.I.L. (John Lydon - sex pistols) – Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) – That petrol emotion. Then Later Pop, Dance, Soul & reggae groups like: Wild Bunch (Nelly hopper & Massive Attack) – Marco Pirroni (Adam & the ants) - Maxi Priest – Sly Dunbar (Sly & Robbie) – Loose Ends – Cheryl Lynn… 

1987 Cisco began going to clubs and learning about this new thing called Acid House, which was spreading like crazy throughout London’s underground scene, culminating in the famous “Summer of Love” in 1988, the genre’s golden period. 

Around this time, a record label called, Jack Trax, “One of the 1st to release Acid House, House & techno in UK” moved in next door and began using the same studio for recording sessions, with Cisco as the engineer working with Fingers Inc, Adonis, Marshall Jefferson & Derrick May. Cisco released his first record in 1988 on Ferrari records (R&S records) Then later “Cisco Ferreira” EP on Fragile. 

His first big break came in 1994, when he and fellow Londonite Colin McBean (a.k.a. Mr. G) were brought on by Internal Records to help co-produce a group called Salt Tank. A record contract with Internal/FFRR soon followed, committing The Advent to 12 EP’s and 3 albums.

Today, The Advent goes on just as Cisco Ferreira. While he has had a long history with tons of accomplishments to hang his hat on, he continues to make history. The Advent is fulfilling Cisco’s vision as much as ever. He is busy touring as both a DJ and a live performer, producing for numerous labels, and running his own Techno imprint, Kombination Research. 

As Cisco moves forward, striving to fulfill the ambitious goals he has set one can look back at his storied past and see how he has come full circle… The Saga continues.
