Kicking off the EP is the salaciously titled ‘Late Night Remedy’. Crowd noises interspersed with drum breaks and funky bass it definitely has a live feel – further emphasised with a female intermittently hollering from the crowd ‘See what you think about this girl’ juxtaposing with a typically de riguer soul vox exclaiming ‘Come on girl’. Complete with a cheeky motown sample from The Undisputed Truth and the track wouldn’t sound out of place on an old KDJ 12” – a funk-fuelled nocturnal jam that needs to be rinsed on the dancefloor…

Since his initial releases in the late-nineties on fellow kindred spirit Moodymann’s KDJ imprint, producer du jour Andres has been an influential figure in the Detroit house scene. His unique blending of genres including soul, jazz, funk and disco with the house sounds synonymous with Detroit gained him a cult following in underground circles. It wasn’t until his eponymously-titled LP’s were released on Moodymann’s Mahogani imprint that more heads took notice – with the launch of his ‘La Vida’ label last year cementing his position as a house heavyweight with ‘Second Time Around’ and ‘New For U’ a permanent fixture in many a discernible DJ’s set. On to the remix and Andres keeps the dusty vox and typically drenches the track with his brand of motor city soul. Coming complete with warm bass and swooping strings, his interpretation as ever has a timeless aesthetic and creates an organic laissez-faire vibe that’s perfect to soak up and kick back to – a pure summer joint…

For March’s City Fly show Flat White Records bossman Flat White Chris joins Jonna as part of our local (Leicester) guest mix series!

Flat White Chris

Since its launch in 2016, FWR has been dealing records online and at record fairs around the country. It wasn’t until 2018 that head honcho, Flat White Chris decided to start releasing records under the Flat White name, and launched as a label.
Already with eight releases to its name, the label has showcased talents such as Jacques Renault, Last Nubian, Garrett David, Byron The Aquarius, Felipe Gordon, (to name a few) as well as Flat White Chris himself.

The label prides itself on championing up and coming artists from around the globe, as well as those from the UK and specifically, Leicester City.
So far, releases have been played by Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio 6Music, had features with the likes of Dj Mag and Mixmag, as well as being stocked by record stores all over the world.

Back in October 2018, Chris launched his very own label night in Leicester, Flat White Fridays. This has been a resounding success with Chris’s 6+hour vinyl sets establishing a real following in less than a year. Monthly bookings (past and future) include Felipe Gordon, Kassian, Cleanfield, City Fly Records, Danny Langan and SlothBoogie.

HUMMING BIRDS (UGLY DRUMS ACID DUB)

Having been on their radar for some time, City Fly have finally snared producer du jour Ugly Drums to contribute to the label with a remix. The cologne native’s inimitable production style has seen him appear on a diverse array of prestigious house labels such as Rush Hour, Freerange, Kolour, Black Key, and Fifty Fathoms Deep – not to mention his debut ‘Saturn Memories’ LP on the discernible Quintessentials imprint – and with an upcoming guest spot at City Fly’s renowned club night, it was only a matter of time and natural progression that he would feature on their next release. On to the remix and as the title implies, Ugly Drums adds some Chi-town flavour in giving some acid-induced indigestion complete with 303 squelches, handclaps and cowbell that wouldn’t sound outta place on an old, battered Trax record. Add some eerie synths and warbling vocal and you’ve got a typically idiosyncratic take on house that only Ugly Drums can concoct – from Cologne via Chicago…

Not content with just one remix, City Fly have enlisted the transatlantic touch of deep house deity Fred P to add further gravitas to the EP. Though a veteran of the scene, it wasn’t until he started releasing tracks on his Soul People imprint under his ‘Black Jazz Consortium’ alias that heads took notice with his deep and transcendent productions. Along with fellow New York Natives such as Levon Vincent, DJ Qu, Joey Anderson and Anthony Parasole, he was a major player in helping revitalise the NY house scene and has since released on esteemed labels such as Undergound Quality, Strength Music, Esperanza, Mule Electronic, Finale Sessions and The Corner – also remixing the likes of peers such as Nina Kraviz, DJ Qu, Basic Soul Unit and Lady Blaktronica. With this particular reshape it’s another soul-charged ethereal excursion full of depth and emotion – one to submerge the dancers into a dream state…

Japanese producer Kez YM returns to City Fly with four deep house numbers with his ‘Solidity’ EP out on November 30th.

Respected for dropping releases on a select series of underground house imprints, such as Yore Records, Faces Records and Gerd’s 4Lux, Kez YM first appeared on City Fly back in 2013 with his ‘Late Night Blue Sound’ EP, which was subsequently the Leicester label’s most popular release to date. Real name Kazuki Yamaguchi, the Berlin-based artist’s productions contain elements of funk, organic and Detroit house, and have received the nod from the likes of Moodymann, Larry Heard, Osunlade, Jimpster and Cassy.

Dripping with Kez’s trademark deepness, the release initiates with the grooving ‘Bump Into The Sky’, before ‘Eagle Eye’ ups the energy with crisp 909 drums and trippy synth work. On the flip ‘My Joy’ is underpinned by deep, jazzy melodies as a twisted vocal sample operates on top, until ‘Spiral Traffic’ concludes it all by combining looping vocal coos with tumbling piano chords.

UK house imprint City Fly curate a package featuring its label founders plus some special guests.

The Leicester label has been championing quality house music since 2011, with the likes of Basic Soul Unit, Flori, Kez YM, Red Rack’Em, Creative Swing Alliance and Tim Toh all appearing on its discography. However, on this occasion the latest wax features the talent of the home team with each track coming from the City Fly crew themselves, honing in on the imprint’s trademark sound of deep, authentic and uncompromising house music.

The release opens with a laidback groover titled ‘Henry Western’, a collab between Jonna & Samwell featuring the unstoppable Lady Blacktronika. It’s a heads down, no nonsense affair with moody chords underpinning mournful vocals that ooze with soul. Next up is the smooth, loopy disco of Last Trip to Gandahar’s ‘R136a1’ – a classic cut that even Soundstream himself would be proud of.

Moving on, ‘Without You’ by Darran P balances silky Rhodes with melancholic vocals, until J’Shez’s remix of Flori’s ‘Holloway’ concludes the release in mesmerising fashion.

Lemy Leopard & Simbad join forces to generate an emotive house release for Leicester-based imprint City Fly.

With original material spanning the likes of Lady Blacktronika, Basic Soul Unit, Kez YM, Flori and Ugly Drums, not to mention remixes from Fred P, Andres, Medlar and DJ Nature, it’s safe to say that City Fly is one of Britain’s finest exponents of quality deep house today. Joining the label, Parisian producer and Qalomota Records regular Lemy Leopard pairs up with Flying Lotus and Gilles Peterson favourite Simbad (who appeared on City Fly last year) for a very promising outing.

‘Vibin’ is an upfront slice of deep house, combining soulful coos with a spoken word sample as crunchy snares join funky bass licks. Meanwhile, it’s easy to hear how ‘Cosmic Energie’ earned its title as it impliments interstellar synths and ebbing pads to form an uplifting gem.

Kicking off the EP is the original mix of the title track by Steven-J himself. Initially building on an aggressive tip with stabbing beats and an uncompromising crunching bassline, an infectious swirling synth soon interjects and proves a core component of the track that is engaging and mesmerising in equal measure – the listener only momentarily distracted from its woozy hypnotism with the intermittent female vocal snippet exclaiming ‘What?’ An altogether more atmospheric affair that takes the listener on a deeper trajectory, ‘Groove Your World’ proves to be an otherworldly groove – one for the early hours with the lights down low...

Having been a guest DJ at City Fly’s label night last year and with another DJ appearance scheduled later this year, it was only a matter of time before fellow kindred spirit Medlar contributed to a City Fly release. Having burst on to the scene last year with every discernible DJ’s favourite ‘Terrell’ on Wolf Recordings, 2012 has proved to be a hive of activity for Medlar with further contributions to Wolf, a release on Kolour Recordings under his Klic alias plus a plethora of remixes including a killer remix of Steffi’s ‘Yours’ and more recently remixing Steven-J’s Creative Swing Alliance on Tsuba – not to mention a jet-set DJ schedule... On to the record and with ‘Groove Your World’ Medlar’s remix is one of his typical idiosyncratic interpretations with an in-vogue garage vibe flexing with bouncy bass, killer keys and shuffling rhythm bubblin’ over into an effervescent bomb – strictly for the dancefloor...

Commencing with looping percussion and a garage-sliced vox yearning to ‘Let Me Know’, initially the track has a live feel that is reminiscent of previous Creative Swing Alliance releases. However, it’s not long before it undertakes a metamorphosis when some arresting chords drop in, relentlessly building into a percolating rhythm that contributes to an unrelenting yet hypnotic climax which ceases to drop. With the vox and chords intertwining effortlessly and working in harmony, the uplifting energy and euphoric tone of the track elevates this over your standard club track. Definitely one to rinse peak-time...

Initially building with the textured, all-consuming chord progressions that are now synonymous with Creative Swing Alliance productions, it’s not long before a deep murky bassline infiltrates and seeps in adding some bite and grit – giving a hard edge squarely aimed at the dancefloor. Add to this a de riguer soul vox complimenting the chord stabs and injecting some soul and warmth to proceedings and you’ve got the perfect introduction to the ‘Wobblejay’ sound – rounding off the EP perfectly...

After the success of his ‘CSA EP’ on City Fly’s second release under his nom de plume Creative Swing Alliance, label mainstay and producer du jour Pablo Valentino is back bringing the heat to the label’s latest EP. His contribution, ‘Old New Swing’ kicks off with some conversational dusty vocal samples and warm bass – a tried and tested formula that’s synonymous with his tracks on his MCDE imprint with partner in crime Danilo Plessow. The track then slowly builds with the de rigueur diva soul vox juxtaposing with the intermittent synths and keys – personifying the track title perfectly. Yet again showcasing his production ingenuity in mixing the old and new effortlessly, ‘Old New Swing’ will appeal to the heads and dancers alike – one for the soul and the soles...

City Fly is DJ/Producer Collective, Record Label & Club Party from Leicester, UK. City Fly consists of Jonna, The Last Trip To Gandahar, J’Shez, Dale Tonks & Darran P. They have been responsible for helping it grow from a small club night into a global record label ‘championing the best in house music' releasing music from the likes of DJ Nature, Fred P, Andres, Kez YM, Simbad, Lay-Far, Red Rack'em and Basic Soul Unit. The releases by Tim Toh & Kez YM have both received DJ Mag’s highest rated ‘Money Shot’ house release’s in separate print edition’s. City Fly is the only label to achieve this with 2 consecutive releases.

As DJ’s, as well as playing around the world they have also kept good company playing alongside a diverse range of artists from Roy Ayers, Louie Vega, MCDE, DJ Sneak, Kyle Hall, Jimpster & Benji B to name a few & as producers released music on respected labels like Kolour LTD, Shadeleaf, R2, BBE, Lumberjacks In Hell, Better Listen, Intimate Friends & City Fly Records of course. Their sound consist of House, Techno & Disco with lots of Groove & Soul.

They have been putting on regular parties in Leicester and further afield for over 10 years now and considered to be a ‘key part of this scene’ & a 'true midlands deep house institution’ according to cult blog Ransom Note.
