Welcome to the episode number 32 of the series, this time we are thrilled to present Estimulo, a passionate music lover and hard working dj, playing in different underground venues all over the world and running his own Estimulo Show from the city of Berlin on futura.de, sharing weekly mixes for over ten years non stop and always keeping it fresh. 

Every mix by Estimulo offers a certain listening experience and this was no exception. Enjoy this 71 minutes selection specially recorded for Botanik Dreams in his basement studio in Germany. Deep, mental, and soulful at the same time.

DJ Hell at Tresor Berlin - 20 Years Gigolo Records Anniversary - New Wave Rave Festival

Another favorite from my collection of classic mixes if this one by DJ Hell, which -strangely enough-, is nowhere to be found on soundcloud.

For me the best part of the mix starts around the 70-minute mark where he performs a Hell-signature-non-synchronized mix into Black Strobe's "Innerstrings" that suddenly changes the tone and tempo of the mix after which he seamlessly moves back into some top-of-the-line techno tracks.

Just ahead of his Cityfox Halloween 2019 appearance, DJ Hell presents a mix that seemingly parallels the Electroclash pioneer’s career characteristics: consistent and enduring, protean and piquant, meditative and visionary.

We celebrate this master of the techno vanguard for four decades of pioneering and blending musical genres, establishing label International Deejay Gigolos, co-collaborating with other critically acclaimed industry label giants and artists, serving as creative mentor and guide to both established fashion and music industry brands, and more influential firsts than many can and have achieved in their lifetime. His humble beginnings as an experimental, versatile club DJ in 1978 propelled this electronic music industry giant into becoming a recognized A&R lead, one of the first techno DJs to produce his own records, a resident at Munich’s first-ever techno club, and a fashion elite advisor and icon.

Now, with more than 300 singles and albums released through the IDG label, and more than five studio albums featuring originally produced material, there’s almost no sound DJ Hell hasn’t explored and exposed his audience to and this mix is no different.

On October 26, we marveled at this man who mastered techno, introduced the world to the first trance compilation, founded a popular subgenre of techno; a man who deserved being awarded the title ‘Man of the Year’ after producing a double album that replicated New York nightlife’s seductive and elusive day-to-night sound and culture.

One of our favourite underground heroes from Berlin, the ultimate digger-selector known as Estimulo - with his long-running, cult-status online show of the same name - has delivered an intense payload of his records in an impeccably blended mix for Avenue Red. This man is a real treasure of the underground: almost unknown beyond it, yet widely known and loved within it.

Now and since Avenue Red began in 2013, one of the impressum lines reads: "We aim to push DJ's and artists based solely upon the quality of their output, the refinement of their taste and their dedication to the music.". Trust us, you really cannot go wrong with this guy if this is the criterion you're truly here for. We will not attempt to categorise or define anything further, so Estimulo takes over from here using a few words and about 20 unreal sonic shurikens. Let the bass kick!!

"My preferred way of approaching a mix is in the most personal way I can. In times when we get overwhelmed by vast amounts of new mixes and tracks, every day I think it's the only way for me to do it. Everyone is already playing the hot new stuff and the charts of big DJ's so the B2 tracks of long lost treasures are definitely the way to go for me. Often people tell me that they don't know any of the records I played and that's the best compliment I can get. That doesn't necessarily mean to get lost in obscurity, the joy of the music and the digging while also making people dance (we are about dance music aren't we?) and maintaining the deepness is important for me.

The most interesting tracks to me are the ones for which you struggle to find a description or put them in a drawer. Is it techno, is it house, is it IDM or electro? So this mix was no different, there's a leaning towards the early 90s 'UK bleep sound' but that's just the starting point from where it can go in all directions. Genre names have never been of interest to me, so this one might well take you through 10 different genres while at the same time feeling monolithic. I hope y'all feel the same!" Avenue Red Podcast #140 - Estimulo

Establishing a collage of influence and musical intuition is no simple feat, it can take time for an artist to establish and forge an identity which is unique and representative of their own character. Adriaan De Roover is a Belgian experimental musician who has just released a new album called 'Leaves'. The album is a freeform piece of work which layers instrumentation and soundscapes in an abstract and yet enchanting manner. It's described as being a piece of work which balances both "peace and restlessness". 

Perhaps better known under the guise of Oaktree his music has previously been championed and supported by the likes of Bonobo, Mary Anne Hobbs and Lefto. His sound is diverse and draws upon elements of the fourth world, establishing comparisons with new age musicians and the likes of Jon Hassell and Brian Eno. 

Adriaan describes his new album as follows: 

“‘Leaves’ was written between 2016 and 2018, mainly in a cabanage in the Ardennes, in solitude and around nature. Although there are some outward moments, I tried to make music that finds as much beauty in small gestures, in doubt and in honesty (above all). I hope you can get lost in it, just like I did, and maybe then, some moments of beauty might reveal themselves.”

We invited him to record a mix which showcases the diversity of his own musical personality, his take on sound and sculpture. He picks tracks by the likes of Bloc Party, Rosalia, Photek, Nicolas Jaar, Alice Coltrane and Anenon.
