Hayat Zor is a beautiful blend of rave-nostalgia, 80s electro-pop and Italo, all shot through with a melancholic, wistful air. Working with analog synths, vintage drum machines, live instrumentation, and the help of a few friends and collaborators along the way.

Encompassing four original productions and two remixes from Gavin Russom and Petrels, 'Hayat Zor' is a collection on which emotional resonance and technical expertise sit side by side. Dancefloor nous, enabled through a love of Italo Disco and Balearic convention, is a strong presence on the EP, with Wright pairing this quality with his enduring spiritual kinship with the music of British new wave artists such as New Order, Cabaret Voltaire and Devo. Although such reference points can be clearly grasped by the listener it is, as ever, to Wright's immense credit that he employs them with such deftness he could be considered every bit an equal. Constituting the first significant Jon Convex release since his acclaimed 'Idoru' LP last year, 'Losing Time/TX' further refines this hypnotic, powerful analog sound. CIV057 Jon Convex - Losing Time / TX

Threads is the debut album from London producer Om Unit. Across its fifteen tracks Threads articulates Om Unit's musical journey from his beginnings to the present. It references his hip hop background, in the swung out, hypnotic headnod of 'Wall of Light' and the positive message of 'Just Sayin'', a collaboration with the mysterious Gone The Hero, (who will be stepping out of the shadows on Jneiro Jarel's Label Who imprint in 2014,) and touches on the music that has impacted him in recent years such as dubstep, the bassweight of which anchors the album. Dubstep's influence is most obvious in the eyes-down roller 'Nagual' and the deeply emotive 'The Silence' featuring vocalist Jinadu. There are also hints of slow-mo house's chug, a sound Coles first experimented with upon taking the Om Unit name. It's this slow groove that drives the spellbinding 'Patients' featuring Young Echo's MC Jabu, who gives life to the beat with poetic raps, and it's also central to the 2013 reworking of 'The Corridor', a track from the first Om Unit release. Here Coles slows the original's key elements down even further while managing to keep all the slow moving, hypnotic magic of the original. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the album is grounded in Coles' junglistic roots, a relationship that has driven much of his recent output and DJ work. Here it takes on its most refined form yet, equally apparent throughout but obviously manifested on the most dancefloor friendly tracks: 'Jaguar', 'Wicker and Pearl' and 'Governer's Bay'. These three tracks close the album but not before one more parting shot, the deeply meaningful 'The Road' featuring London's urban poet, and legend, Charlie Dark.

All nervous energy, ill-defined brilliance, detached emotion, and subdued minimalism, Man is Deaf is the debut album from London based electronic musician Brassica. Sophisticated and distinctive it distills Michael Anthony Wright’s storied musical past; capturing new wave, psych, synth music, avant garde electronics, house, and italo disco; without sounding consigned to any part of it.

Brassica’s obsession with sonic detail and fascination with composition have created something self-consciously experimental and intellectual yet wonderfully refined and thrillingly accessible. Seamless, idiosyncratic and immaculately produced yet wilfully lo-fi, the album is rich with musical and lyrical detail and while the originality and non-conformity at play is to be applauded, this album will not scare off anyone with an interest in music beyond the mainstream. Man is Deaf is not exactly a dance album; and although there is music you can dance to on it, it’s ability to excite is accomplished with no diminution on its makers creativity.

With the album full of melody lines by Moog and Fender Rhodes, rather than Roland 303s or 909s, Brassica is more likely to cite paragons like Talking Heads, King Crimson or Return to Forever as inspirations than Derrick May, Cabaret Voltaire or Aphex Twin, yet all these influences and more are cultivated to create something new that still manages to be oddly familiar. It’s in the pathos of the promiscuous liaisons between noirish anxiety, elements that could have been caned by Belgian new beat and Italian Cosmic DJs, naughty MIDI riffs and orchestral moments that this album generates a gripping power of its own. Brassica’s vocals appear on three tracks; the hope giving and Arthur Russell resembling Tears I Can Afford, the theological questioning in Air esque Psychic Heartburn, and Deplore, a song for Travis Bickle. Guests vocalists include long time collaborator Stuart Warwick, avant garde electronic producer Ghostape and notably Veronica So from celebrated noise/art band Teeth; (who begins her contribution on album opener Be Lost with the line “Everything Not Saved, Will Be Lost”, famously the unintentionally profound quit screen message from a Nintendo console).

Appealingly non-linear Man is Deaf is able to throw you off balance, grabbing your attention with moments that seem alternately unnerving and endearing. Many overt eccentricities hide in this record. A vocoded Italian translation of Slayer’s “Dead Man Skin” in Balo Di Morti. Brian Ferry’s Saxophonist Jorja Renn appears on Be Lost and Psychic Heartburn. Anagrammatic Art Eb Lull Us was written on an old Hammond Organ with a nod towards Mike Oldfield. The Lodger contains the breaths and grunts of a contemporary dance troupe recorded in a collaboration 15 years prior, and the voice of Emile Bojesen (whose little documented collaborations with Brassica as synth punk band Gold Blood) appears on No Apocalypse.

Louis Pasteur said “Chance favours only the prepared mind”. In creating the record Brassica adopted this ‘prepared-minded’ approach. As he tells it...

“This means I can generally go beyond the limits imposed by my education, social conditioning, etc. Rather than write with a theme or clear vision in mind, I work with semi-informed but broadly indiscriminate strokes, throwing ‘paint’ around, observing where it lands. This can take various forms.. giving an experimental piece to an MC or an electro beat to a cellist, trying to play an instrument I can’t play or I dare say, overcoming a lifelong fear by exploring my own voice and lyric-writing ability..... Then there’s a process of looking for patterns amongst the chaos, After a while words form sentences, sentences form paragraphs, paragraphs form chapters of a story and eventually you end up with something more profound than if you’d planned the journey outright.”

Man is Deaf is released on 10th November on Civil Music and follows standout EPs ‘Hayat Zor’ and ‘Temple Fortune’ for the label and much coveted 12”s for innovative underground labels including Andy Blake’s Dissident, Tartaruga and Cyber Dance. Brassica’s remixes include Bicep, Errors, Ford & Lopatin, Alison Moyet, Fan Death, James Yuill and Teeth. His excellent analog live show features much of the ageing analog equipment used to create the album, and with it he has performed alongside artists like I-F, Eygptian Lover, Doppereffekt and Factory Floor at many of the europe’s top venues including London’s Fabric and Berlin’s Renaté in addition to being showcased by Dazed and Confused and I-D Magazine.

Listening to Man is Deaf is an easy pleasure, the sequencing, the pacing, and the mixing make it punchy and nervy, there is movement in it’s fibre and it gleams with the thrill of creating such appealing musical moire.

Man is Deaf is released on 10th November on Civil Music and follows standout EPs ‘Hayat Zor’ and ‘Temple Fortune’ for the label and much coveted 12”s for innovative underground labels including Andy Blake’s Dissident, Tartaruga and Cyber Dance. Brassica’s remixes include Bicep, Errors, Ford & Lopatin, Alison Moyet, Fan Death, James Yuill and Teeth. His excellent analog live show features much of the ageing analog equipment used to create the album, and with it he has performed alongside artists like I-F, Eygptian Lover, Doppereffekt and Factory Floor at many of the europe’s top venues including London’s Fabric and Berlin’s Renaté in addition to being showcased by Dazed and Confused and I-D Magazine.

Listening to Man is Deaf is an easy pleasure, the sequencing, the pacing, and the mixing make it punchy and nervy, there is movement in it’s fibre and it gleams with the thrill of creating such appealing musical moire.

CIV009 Kotchy - She Made It Easy (Palmsout Remixes)

A voyage through international influences taking in, and tweaking out, sounds associated with the Middle East, Europe, West Coast America and Africa.

The adventure kicks off with 'KO Debout', where swallowed vocoder-style vocals unite with the ‘kalimba’ thumb piano, a traditional African instrument whose origins date back 3000 years. The hand claps and fizzing synths of Persian Funk adopt a Middle Eastern vibe, before '149 Dalston Airlines' and 'Nigeria What?' see débruit venturing back into the heart of Africa. Both deploy the unique percussion of the Yoruba people from West Africa, with finale 'Nigeria What?' homing in on the joyous, twanging ‘Highlife’ guitar sound.

Includes 3-D artwork by Rainbowmonkey and 3-D glasses are included for your viewing pleasure.

CIV019 Om Unit - The Timps EP

Part 3 in the 3D trilogy is the four painstakingly crafted tracks of Sis Sürpriz (which translates as Skewer Surprise). Traditional Turkish folk instruments are coupled with modern, synthetic sounds on an EP that’s full of eastern promise. Darbuka drums combine with “bump-hop” beats. Zurna flutes with talkbox effects and scything synths, Bass heavy, low-slung bounce complement the string sounds of the kabak kemane and Davul drums mix with slo-mo, chopped and screwed digi-funk.

Om Unit's third EP for Civil Music. Following on from EPs ‘Transport’ and ‘The Timps’ Om Unit continues to forge his own path. Aeolian showcases five emotive tracks that rouse the senses and together form a cinematic and journeying soundtrack. Focused predominantly, but not exclusively, around the 85/170BPM the unique qualities of ‘Aeolian’ are echoed with the choice of remixers; revered producers Reso and Sweatson Klank both contribute revisions to the package.

CIV048 Darling Farah - Body Remixed

Fluxus is the Munich based producer Danny Scrilla's first transmission for Civil Music. Four original neck snapping instrumental tracks plus two remixes from Japan's Deep Medi member Goth-Trad and London producer and "one to watch" Deft.

On Fluxus Scrilla's productions exploit halftime tempos at 80-90BPM / 160-180 BPM & are seemingly engineered from the sonic essence of '06 OG dubstep's dark sparse dreadnought sounds. Waves of quaking bass grow under iced-out percussion accentuated by toiling snares. Floating chords & hypnotic melodies drive skeletal riddims while sci-fi synthlines arc over the spacious heavyweight ruffage. This is built for towering stacks and pitch-black rooms.

CIV052 Starkey - Orbits

Kuhn's sophomore effort for Civil Music, Kings EP is a collection of four diverse uptempo club tracks with an eclectic sampling palette and Footwork-inspired rhythmic complexities, paying homage to the Kings district of Brooklyn. 

The photography and artwork (which is also by Kuhn) show a Kings skyline and the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower. Look out for Video for "I Quit" by Paolo Xz.

'State' showcases prime-time Berghain techno triangulated with Detroit in 1987, Birmingham in 1997 and London today. Complete with laboratory-precise edits and crystalline sampling the EP recall's Richie Hawtin's Plastikman while staying rooted in afro-rhythmic swing with shuffling hi-hats, deep bass and strokes of barely-tamed percussion.
