The question “How do I save the people I love from going through hell?” already assumes that (1) they need saving, and (2) that we’re capable of doing it. But love, when it’s real, doesn’t always equal rescue. Sometimes it’s release.

When you love someone deeply — a brother, a friend, a partner — your instinct is to protect them from the same pain you’ve already walked through, or shield the fire of pain that engulfs them. Every part of you wants to reach out and grab their hand, but the truth is, pain can’t be outsourced. You can warn someone about the fire, but they’ll only really understand heat after being burned.

So then love becomes something quieter and harder — it’s the decision to withstand their suffering without controlling it. To stay close enough that they can feel your presence, but far enough that they can actually face what’s in front of them. Because if you step in to shield them, you rob them of the transformation.

And when you’ve been their comfort — their soft place to land — it’s almost cruel, because stepping back feels like abandonment. But staying too close turns into enabling. You start carrying their healing for them instead of letting them learn to hold it.

That’s where the paradox lives:

To love someone is to want to protect them.

To actually love them well is to let them be unprotected — to let them meet the world, and themselves, head-on.

And when you’ve gone through something similar — heartbreak, confusion, the breaking open that comes from loss — it’s especially painful to watch them trace the same steps. It’s like seeing an old version of yourself walking straight into the storm you barely survived. But maybe that’s the point — you’re not supposed to pull them out; you’re supposed to stand at the edge and remind them that they’ll make it through.
