Study Sesh

Community Service-Learning (CSL) offers University of Alberta students the opportunity to work and make a difference with a local community group, while reflecting and putting their experiences in context within a university course. These community partnerships provide opportunities for students to gain valuable experience, and to contribute and increase their awareness of the social and political life of their community.

CJSR provides CSL students the opportunity to learn how to produce an audio documentary on a topic related to their course.

Community Service Learning Documentaries

A series of 17 radio stories featuring short stories and remembrances of Edmonton’s Chinatown. This series was produced at CJSR as part of a Community Service Learning project at the University of Alberta. It is part of a multimedia project capturing the history of Edmonton’s Chinatown, called Figure 一，二，三，六，八. The project also included archival research done by students under the supervision of Lan Chan-Marples, a video documentary by Shawn Tse, and a series of paintings by Cui Jinzhe.

In DARK MATCH, Miss Behave and her fellow wrestlers reach a creepy destination for an unsanctioned car. They realize too late that the weekend won’t go as planned. Once the event begins, Miss and her friends are pitted against each other, one at a time, in a kill or be killed event that’s part gladiator match, part ritual sacrifice.

In DIE ALONE (starring Carrie-Anne Moss and Frank Girllo) a young man with amnesia bands together with a rugged survivalist after a devastating virus causes a zombie-like outbreak.

Field Tracker #131 - Eliane Radigue, drone pioneer; May 10 2015

Christian Zyp interviews Lucas Frison (director) about his 6 docu-series WE WERE BRONCOS. It revolves around Ryan Straschnitzki's journey to  try and make the National Team for Canada's wheelchair basketball game and a potential trip to Los Angels for the 2028 Paralympics. The former member of the Humboldt Broncos was paralyzed from the chest down in 2018, when a semi-trailer ran a stop sign and barrelled into the path of the junior hockey team's bus in rural Saskatchewan.

Sixteen people died and 13 were hurt.

Lucas Frison and his film crew with Regina-based Prairie Cat Productions followed Straschnitzki for eight months to create the series WE WERE BRONCOS. It airs on AMI, or Accessible Media Inc., beginning May 26, 2025.

DREAM EATER follows Mallory (Drumm), a documentary filmmaker, who heads to a remote cabin in the mountains with her boyfriend Alex (Williams) to document his violent parasomnia. As his condition worsens, Mallory suspects something more sinister may be at play. Join Anna Kuelken, Trina Moyles (author of the book WOMEN WHO DIG that inspired the movie) and the film’s powerhouse cast—five female farmers and land stewards from Western Canada—for a thought provoking discussion on the making of this project as well as vital themes of gender equality, social justice, food sovereignty and climate change, facilitated by poet and author Rayanne Haines.

WOMEN WHO DIG showcases Canadian women on a journey to combat food insecurity and the industrial farm system by utilizing traditional farming techniques rooted in ancestral history. The small family farm is often perceived to be an occupation of the past that is being overtaken by large-scale industrial farming practices. Big Ag wreaks havoc on our global climate, all the while creating a GMO monoculture that contributes to an enormous loss of our planet’s biodiversity.

Adapted from the book "Women Who Dig: Farming, Feminism, and the Fight to Feed the World" by Trina Moyles, this documentary, filmed over the course of three years in cinema veritas, offers an intimate portrait of the lesser-told story of women farmers and land stewards pushing back against industrial practices.

NECHAKO: IT WILL BE A BIG RIVER AGAIN is a crucial documentary from Lyana Patrick that follows two Indigenous Nations fighting for our collective future. When the Kenney Dam was built in the 1950s, it diverted 70 percent of the Nechako River into an artificial reservoir, severely impacting the lives of local Stellat’en and Saik’uz Nations. What followed were decades of resistance, including legal actions against the Canadian federal and provincial governments and Rio Tinto Alcan, a subsidiary of a global mining conglomerate.

MODERN WHORE is a hybrid documentary that reimagines popular depictions of sex work through the lived experiences of writer, performer, and sex worker, Andrea Werhun. Part documentary and part re-enactments, MODERN WHORE features Andrea in interview and playing herself, in addition to a dastardly character named “Shame” — a tyrannical inner demon. HOW DARK MY LOVE - Scott Gracheff, Joe Coleman & Whitney Ward Interview

THE PYTHON HUNT... Every year, the Florida government calls upon the general public to compete in an invasive python removal contest in the Everglades in an attempt to save the threatened ecosystem. For 10 gruelling nights, an eclectic group of amateur hunters confront the dangerous terrain, nocturnal creatures, and their own desires. Meanwhile, one professional hunter leads the charge to undermine the competition, questioning what hides beneath the python mania gripping the ‘glades. The film, which had its World Premiere at SXSW, is the feature documentary debut of CUFF alum Xander Robin, who attended CUFF in 2017 for the Canadian Premiere of his first narrative feature ARE WE NOT CATS.

MEASURES FOR A FUNERAL brilliantly spotlights a young academic’s run towards one woman — acclaimed early 20th-century Canadian violinist Kathleen Parlow — as she simultaneously flees from another, her failed musician mother. Sofia Bohdanowicz’s latest pieces together the extraordinary story of real-life early 20th-century Canadian violinist Kathleen Parlow — who by rights should be a household name — blending fact with a fictionalized family history.

The director’s frequent collaborator, actress Deragh Campbell, plays Audrey Benac, a woman on a single-minded mission to learn more about Parlow, who has slipped away from collective memory. Melding her own personal history into the film, Parlow was Bohdanowicz’s grandfather’s violin mentor and teacher. Culminating in a beautiful final concerto that is layered in meaning and importance, this film brings to light a forgotten icon, while simultaneously reflecting on loss, regrets, and closure.

MEADOWLARKS... Inspired by her own acclaimed documentary BIRTH OF A FAMILY, the film tells the story of four Cree siblings, Connie, Marianne, Gwen, and Anthony, separated as babies through Canada’s notorious Sixties Scoop, which saw indigenous children taken from their homes to be adopted by white families. Excited and curious, but also scared and afraid of rejection, they agree to meet for the first time over a holiday weekend in the mountains of Banff.

13 new fungi species identified | CJSR Study Sesh

Christian Zyp, Lucas Anders, Lindsey Campbell and Mark Davies gather around the CJSR fireplace with hot chocolate in hand to partake in their annual discuss a holiday movie/special of questionable quality. This year it was CHRISTMAS IN WONDERLAND, filmed in Edmonton, they mention it SEVERAL times in the movie. More specifically, it was mostly filmed in West Edmonton Mall. It stars Donovan Workun, Patrick Swayze, Chris Kattan, Carmen Electra and Tim Curry. 

CHRISTMAS IN WONDERLAND (2006) follows the Saunders family's chaotic move from LA to Edmonton. After losing his job, Wayne Saunders is struggling to keep it together with his wife arriving from the US, his children resenting the move and just trying to get through Christmas Eve at W.E.M. The Saunders children, Brian and Mary, find counterfeit money that falls into their laps while skating at the Ice Palace.  A chase by criminals (Chris Kattan, Preston Lacy & Carmen Electra) ensues while the kids go on a spending spree. All the while,  Dad (Patrick Swayze) tries to save Christmas and catch the crooks, all culminating in a surprise visit from Santa... in multiple forms, multiple times.

Claudio Simonetti is the keyboardist of the progressive rock band Goblin, Simonetti has specialized in the scores for Italian and American horror films since the 1970s. A long-time collaborator of director Dario Argento, Simonetti has worked on several of the director/producer's films including Deep Red, Suspiria, Dawn of the Dead, Tenebrae, Phenomena, Demoni, and Opera.

MOVING RADIO - 2025 in Review

Christian Zyp interviews Clare Mullen (director) about her documentary short THE EDMONTON STORYTELLER: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF TONY CASHMAN. The WOrld Premiere takes place Saturday January 10th at 3PM at the Metro Cinema. It's presented by the Broad View Film Festival as a double bill with another short film. There will be a Q&A following the screening.

THE EDMONTON STORYTELLER: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF TONY CASHMAN - Clare Mullen Interview

When faced with political rhetoric that seeks to potentially further the divide between nations, we take the time to examine the things that bring us together in the face of our differences, rather than separate us. In this radio doc by Mahad Omar, we look at the efforts being made by a local NGO here in Edmonton called Sombrilla, that brings youth together from Canada and Peru, to build a basis for the future generations interest in international development and relations.

What Brings Us Together

Jennifer McFarlane is an Elementary Music Teacher in Edmonton, Alberta. She had a strong desire to highlight First Nations, Metis, and Inuit music in her classroom lessons, but hesitated because of concerns of cultural misappropriation and lack of personal experience with these cultures. So she reached out to artists and culture bearers in Alberta and British Columbia to find out what resources were available to her, and what pitfalls should be avoided. The conversations exposed a whole collections of knowledges, experiences and issues surrounding this complex topic. This podcast contains excerpts from four of Jennifer’s interviews, and features a full spectrum of opinions on two questions: Should First Nations, Metis and Inuit music should be taught in a mainstream school system, and if so, how?

Indigenous Music In Education

Ce sont les séries éliminatoires de Hockey  dans la ligue nationale, ces éliminatoires soulèvent la ferveur des fans. La pression sur les joueurs est  au maximum, qui dit hockey parle aussi des retombées économiques des villes où se jouent les matchs.

Cet enthousiasme est descendu quand les Oilers d’Edmonton ont perdu contre les Ducks  d’Anaheim le 10 mai à Anaheim . C’était leur 7 eme match, la déception était palpable parmi les fans qui espéraient que les Oilers se rendent en demie finale.

Ce sport roi ici au Canada est une culture qui réunit tous les canadiens amateurs ou passionnés par le hockey même ceux qui n’aiment pas l’hiver  selon le Dr. Jerry Toupin, auteur du livre Winter in Canada. Un livre paru en 2015

Edmonton Loves Latin Music

Local artist Grace Law remembers visiting the Harbin Gate as a child in the late 1980s. Whenever her family would visit, from either Hong Kong or Calgary, they would get into the car and drive to Chinatown to take photographs of the Gate. Grace reflects on the Harbin Gate as a public space that is both personally and culturally significant.

Grace Law, Remembering the Harbin Gate

Emmy Mah was a young teenager when she came to Canada, and she was one of the very few Chinese females in Edmonton at the time. Due to this, she was asked to participate in the Klondike Days Parade Float in 1953. Her radio clip portrays a real sense of excitement as she reminisces about children smiling and her high heel shoes.

Helen Kwan Yee Cheung, a 2013 M.A. University of Alberta graduate, pursued studying the Chinese community history in Edmonton through the lens of Cantonese Opera. She found that Cantonese Opera had elements of several social functions: cultural entertainment, philanthropy, and homeland politics. In this audio story, Helen talks about Cantonese Opera providing cultural entertainment not only for the viewers/listeners, but also for the performers.

Propaganda - Helen Kwan Yee Cheung On Cantonese Opera And Homeland Politics

In this piece, we are just outside of the Shaw Conference Centre with Ken Gee, learning about the hill of Goji berries that once grew there on Grierson Hill. Ken shares a meaningful memory about him picking these berries with his grandparents, and how they were preserved, even through the construction of the conference centre.

Diana, a Mestiza from South America (Ecuador), dig into the language cultural identity and history of the Métis Nation of North Turtle Island. Language and culture always go hand in hand. Having a new language incorporated into a culture due to significant historical events could change many aspects of a community in a positive and negative regard. There are political, cultural and social issues involving French language in the Metis communities that have been under development for years and continue to be topics of discussions. In this documentary, Diana unravels the French and bilingual history of The Metis and the impact it has had in their identity and culture over time from the perspective of Les Skinner and Ambrose Cardinal, two Métis residing in Alberta. On this piece, Diana wants to high-light the importance of understanding and learning about the Métis Nation and to serve as a platform that would allow listeners to educate themselves in the language cultural identity of the Métis.

My name is Diana Chiang Jurado, I am an international graduate student from Ecuador doing a MSc in Medicine at the University of Alberta. I have a deep passion for knowledge and learning which drives me to be involved and love the arts, philosophy, music and science.
