Gwich'in Tribal Council Grand Chief Ken Kyikavichik reclaimed his traditional name. Once known as Ken Smith, he says he hopes the reclamation will encourage more people to do the same and revitalize the Gwich'in language.

CKLB’S artist highlight of the week is none other than 16-year-old Tlicho rapper Shaeden Letts or Shaedy Dain.

Born and raised in Somba K’e (Yellowknife), Dain talks about the effects of addiction, mental health, and anxiety on this record.

His first solo EP is called Strain and is now available on all streaming services. 

Dain also has big dreams of taking his music and message, representing the Tłı̨chǫ people to the world stage.

What’s the worst thing you could imagine thawing out in a Glad garbage bag?

Richard Van Camp's new short story, Scariest Story Ever, plays on that idea. 

The story takes place in Van Camp's hometown of Fort Smith (or Fort Simmer) and tells the tale of a group of young boys wanting to hear the spookiest story ever and all they’ll do to get it.

Seven teenagers from the Mackenzie Delta are en-route to Fairbanks Alaska for the 42nd annual Athabaskan Fiddlers music festival. 
 
Kiedyn Nerysoo, Gavin Francis, Brendan Vittrekwa, Tucker Gordon, Zody Kay and Ethan Koe make up this young cohort of Gwich'in fiddlers. 
 
"Our people, our tempo," is what makes the Gwich'in fiddle style so distinct, explains former  Teetł'it Zheh chief and Gwich'in leader, James Ross. 
 
Ross is one of the volunteers accompanying the youth on the trip. 
 
He calls them an inspiration because many of them are self-taught musicians. 
 
“Here we are learning from our teenagers that good things can happen,” he says. “There is hope.”
 
 CKLB Reporter Mariah Caruso caught up with Ross and a few of the boys as they were driving up to Alaska. 

The festival kicks off on November 7th, with our Gwich'in youth performing at 8 p.m.

Introduction

Norma Kassi was raised and educated in Old Crow, the most northerly community in the Yukon.
She is a citizen of the Vuntut Gwich’in First Nation (People of the Lakes) and a member of the Wolf Clan.
Kassi was selected by the Elders of the Gwich’in Nation to act as a spokesperson on behalf of the Gwich’in people for the preservation of the Porcupine Caribou Herd. 
She traveled throughout the world educating people about the inseparable relationship of the Gwich’in people and the Porcupine Caribou Herd.
