Recorded live on the HMAS Vampire, Sydney Harbour ⚓️🎶🌊

In 1964, my dad’s eldest brother, Franklin Morgan, was a 20 y/o sailor working aboard the HMAS Voyager & by all accounts a lovely young man. Frank was one of 82 officers & sailors who tragically died when the HMAS Melbourne collided with the HMAS Voyager during a nighttime training exercise. It was the worst peacetime disaster in the RAN’s history & devastating for dad’s family. 

57 years later, Frank’s niece (me) was invited to play an ambient set on board the Voyager’s identical sister ship, the HMAS Vampire. Bit of a full circle moment. 

NB: Although both the HMAS Voyager and Vampire were ‘Daring Class Destroyers’ ie. gun ships, neither ship ever fired at an enemy.

Preparing for this gig was at times very sad, and being physically on the ship felt heavy. This history influenced some music choices & the narrative that I built. You will also hear a ceremonial Yolgnu song to release the spirits of the deceased ❤️🖤 You will hear women’s voices singing in various languages, because brave women in Australia are now raising their voices & being heard 👊 Almost half the music is composed and/or sung by women. And underpinning all of this is one of the most powerful and beautiful forces in our world - the ocean 🌊 

I toyed around with some subtle 8D-inspired mixing at a few points, let me know if you hear it & like it. Enjoy X

Claire Morgan’s daytime hustle as a composer for film and TV (as well as a lifetime of musical study) has lent her output a level of technical finesse that’s usually hard to come by. Her first techno track was made for a film’s nightclub scene, and in a satisfying twist of fate she has mastered her craft and forged a sound that now sparks excitement on real-world dancefloors from Berlin to Sydney. Like her renowned ten-hour sets, Bassiani Podcast 107 is patient and skillful; a journey whose shifting palette seamlessly morphs from blunt-spoken Techno to saccharine euphoria and all the shades in between.

December 2013 was a hectic rush of friends, family and gigs back in my home country and looked a little something like:

4our 2nd Bday -> Summer on the Green -> Strange Fruit -> S.A.S.H -> Sound of Thought #5 -> Revolver -> Tramp -> Spice Cellar -> EXIT -> Mad Racket NYE. Phew!

Finally back in Berlin now and after listening back to all those recordings I have chosen to share the one from Mad Racket NYE at the Marrickville Bowlo (Sydney), and definitely not because it is the most technically proficient! Au contraire, it was the very wee hours of the new year and everyone was fairly loose, me included.

Mad Racket has been at the top of my gig wishlist for many years now. It's an incredible, world-class shindig, the residents are among the best djs on the planet and it was such a big honour to be invited to play. 

If 2014 continues in the manner in which it began then it is going to be some year!

Massive love and thanks to everyone back home who made December such a special month for me.

It has been a crazy inspiring year and I was lucky to get the opportunity to express that in such a beautiful way. 

Here is a selection of pivotal ambient tracks, a glimpse into French impressionism and synesthesia, contemporary classical, film scores and sound collages from some of my adventures around the world chasing this music dream. 

This was a completely new experience for me, I've never played an ambient set before and never attempted to record music in a Gothic cathedral before. What you're hearing is a mix of line-out and microphone recordings from around the pulpit. 

Of course, with any experiment, the first time is a steep learning curve. Luckily I was invited back to this magnificent place in March 2015 and can't wait to go deeper into this process.

Live @ God Goes Deep, Vor Frue Kirke Copenhagen - November 2014

Last month I was in Copenhagen playing at Strom Festival & caught Surgeon playing a live modular set at God Goes Deep. He totally hypnotised the church with these droney, minimal, ice-cold tones, I fell asleep leaning against the wall and was roused by spooky dialogue some time later. The sense of space and timing was really powerful and i had that in mind when choosing music for this set.

Again, this is a mix of line out and microphone recordings, so you can get a feel for this amazing space.

My third & final ambient mix from God Goes Deep at the Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen, recorded in April 2018 💒 You are hearing a 6-channel mixdown (stereo line out + stereo microphones under the dome + stereo microphones suspended above the pews). I aimed to recreate the immersive atmosphere of God Goes Deep which was like entering a parallel universe. The sense of calm created by music, surroundings & acoustics was corporeal & completely cathartic. Basically the greatest sound bath you can imagine 🛀🎶
