On the Trail was produced by Juno Award-winning producer Bob Hamilton and features world-class musicians from across Canada. On the Trail is a collection of original tunes with colours of folk, jazz, blues, ragtime, western swing, bluegrass and old-time country. Inspired by songs such as "Don't Fence Me In" by Cole Porter, "Mack the Knife" by Kurt Weill, and "Chauffeur" by Memphis Minnie, the album covers themes of love, death, revenge, travel and simpler times.

This song is an analogy for the journey through a troubled life. The girl in this song trades her hearts to a stranger, sells her soul for cigarettes, and at the end of such a short life, she dies alone when her lungs give out. Such an uplifting way to end the album! But at least we onlookers can learn from her mistakes.

Old-time country meets jazz cabaret.
With a healthy dose of humour and a vivid imagination, Claire Ness has a performance style duly influenced by her background as a clown and vaudevillian. Born and raised surrounded by Yukon wilderness and Broadway showtunes, Claire's songs are filled with poetry, storytelling, imagery, metaphors and her banter between songs leaves the audience feeling light-hearted and connected, like one big happy family.
