Those were the hallmarks of the internet of the 90s—and chatrooms were very much a part of that era.

All you needed was to choose a messaging service, find a quirky handle, and you could join a virtual conversation with your friends or even complete strangers.

Now chat rooms are back—the social media Facebook giant is giving them another shot and launching a trial here and in Canada.
