Timeless(Instrumental)

UK based artist and synth enthusiast Matthew Hodson was one of the first to get his hands on a prototype of the Modal SKULPT synthesiser. He produced this banging demo track showcasing some of the sonic capabilities our new portable polyphonic synth can dish out.

One half of the Knighstown outfit, Matthew is a busy performer and music producer who has worked in some of the best studios up and down of the UK. Just signed to the legendary FatCat Records, his future sonic excursions will see Matthew produce his own brand of psychedelic techno characterised for his controlled fusion of both ambient and aggressive electronica. His latest album ‘DETACH’ builds on layers of rhythms and melody, drenched in arrhythmic delays and swashes of reverb, which masterfully play with song structure, provoking the listener with familiarity and yet disconnection - is out now via his own label Solitude. Recent performances by Hodson include opening for Wire, supporting the likes of Alex Banks (Monkeytown Records), Ulrich Schnauss, Rival Consoles (Erased Tapes) and also working with the original BBC Radiophonic Workshop on their new material at Peter Gabriel’s Realworld studios.

Originally written for tap-dance choreography as part of WWU New Music/New Dance 2017, Warmer is an exploration of a technique developed by musician Nick Zammuto, in which rhythms are etched into the locked groove at the center of a vinyl record using a razor blade (or any other cutting implement). This process is aided by the use of small paper discs with evenly-spaced markings which are adhered over the record's label and provide different time signatures. However, since one revolution of a record spinning at 33.3 RPM will always take 1.8 seconds, a change in time signature merely results in a different subdivision of the same 1.8 second beat, which can be used to great polyrhythmic effect. Other hands-on creative methods used in this track include using an x-acto knife and a magnifying glass to loop specific grooves, as well as cutting a record in half, flipping one of the halves over and taping it back together so half of each side of the record are on both sides. All of the sounds used in this track were sourced from vinyl records, mostly Reader's Digest compilations of easy listening music from the 70s and 80s. Most of the melodic flute and oboe samples came from a record containing the pieces Density 21.5 and Octandre by Edgard Varèse.

Warmer

First premiered at the Untwelve/WWU Microtonal Adventures Festival 2018, Squeeb is a fun ditty in the tuning system of 19 equal divisions of the octave (as opposed to the 12 equal divisions used by the overwhelming majority of music today). 
The majority of percussion sounds in this piece were created by precisely etching rhythms into the locked run-out groove of a vinyl record using a razor blade. Occasionally, these sounds are given pitch through extreme EQ'ing and are combined with each other to create polyrhythms. Squeeb is also a fairly rhythmically complex piece, featuring melodic sections in 6/4 and two distinct groupings of 11/8 time. 
Squeeb's main motive is built around 19edo's relatively close approximations of the greater tridecimal tritone (13:9) and the perfect fifth (3:2). Many chords throughout feature simultaneous use of 19edo's approximations of the tridecimal major third (13:10) and the 5:4 major third. While much of the harmony is diatonic in nature, the use of many neighboring tones give it an undeniably xenharmonic sound approached in a very palatable and accessible way. 
This is a stereo mix, distinct from the original quadraphonic version.
