The Internal Combustion Engine in a Scottish Woodland, 18.05.2023 is a manipulated field recording composition, using a continuous, 10 minute long take of the sounds of evening birdsong and the crepuscular activities of a woodland in Highland Perthshire, intersected with the noise generated by occasional passing traffic. 

The traffic noises which are manipulated in the piece were naturally captured as a representation of the range of applications of the internal combustion engine in this particular corner of Scotland; the agricultural sounds of tractors, ATV, Land Rovers, and large and small goods vehicles. Vehicles which are vital, as the agricultural industry continues to struggle to keep up with our seemingly exponentially growing demand for food.

The composition explores and exploits the interplay at the boundary between the sounds of the natural and man made environments, as they exchange dominance in sound of the landscape.
