Lloyd Rodgers, self-described as “once known as a clarinetist,” taught theory and composition at Cal State Fullerton. 
A New Ground was commissioned by legendary clarinetist Kalman Bloch (1913-2009) in 1985 and premiered at Little Bridges Hall at Pomona College in Claremont, California. 
The title "A New Ground" is a reference to Baroque composer Henry Purcell’s  harpsichord piece of that name; rather than being a programmatic title, it is simply descriptive of the type of piece: “ground” is an antiquated term for chaconne, a musical form in which a short, repeating harmonic progression serves as the “ground,” or outline, for variations. 
In this piece, the violin introduces the ground, and then the clarinet joins in. Typical of the Baroque influence, the piece is ornamented and light in touch on the violin, and a similar approach on the clarinet.

Tonight’s performance of A New Ground represents the special student-teacher-lineage in the small musical world.
Kalman Bloch taught at Cal State Fullerton down the hallway from Lloyd Rodgers for many years; Alice Gallagher studied with his daughter (and co-prinicpal of the LA Phil) Michele Zukovsky, and recently, theory with Lloyd Rodgers

Born in Berlin in 1917 as the only daughter of a prominent Jewish surgeon, Charlotte Salomon was  a young and talented German-Jewish painter who, at age 22, escaped Nazi Germany with her grandparents to live in hiding in the still-unoccupied French Riviera. In order to maintain sanity within increasingly insane circumstances, she painted within the span of two years a 769-canvas Gesamtkunstwerk narrating her life’s story, shaped as a Singspiel (complete with cast of characters, three acts, a prologue and epilogue) entitled "Life, or Theater?" Text was included in transparent overlays fit over each painting, along with cues for musical excerpts by Bach, Schubert and Bizet, as well as other composers and various tunes popular at the time. At age 26, Charlotte was eventually discovered by the Nazis and sent to the gas chambers of Auschwitz, five months pregnant. 

Charlotte’s detailed and brightly colored depictions of her childhood, compounded with allusions to prominent musical emblems of a dying European culture, led me to musically translate her nostalgia into a contemplation of Schubert's "Winterreise." “Gute Nacht” (the first song of the cycle) is used most prominently in this work, appearing in the outer sections to both set the tone of the work and usher in its farewell. The middle section is a nightmarish, kaleidoscopic cadenza on themes from other songs in the cycle, as memory and present collide with increasing panic and imminent sense of doom.

This work is a revision and embellishment of an earlier piece, "Prelude to Charlotte," which was commissioned for the Zoom! Concert Series at Merkin Hall in 1996.

This work was inspired by Haydn's late String Quartet in D Major, op. 76, no. 5; I preserved all of the main themes from the Haydn, while adding new material and re-engineering the piece from the perspective of the cello soloist.
