Composition, however occasionally delightful, requires dedication bordering on ruthlessness. Accordingly, instead of speaking to your friends (as you would very much like to do), instead, you spend just one more hour....just a couple more hours, working on a composition. Writers, painters and composers, are all ruthless in this way. Because they are completely (and in a sense, helplessly) dedicated. The path towards art (best exemplified on Soundcloud by the relentlessly dedicated Japanese experimental artist Sanshu Seiso, whose work and approach to work has had a major influence on me) really is 99% work....1% inspiration. I cannot and do not speak for Seiso. All I can speak to, is my interpretation of his approach. My interpretation, is that he attempts slight improvements every day (let us say, for example, 0.01% improvements). This may not seem much. However, through effluxion of time, these improvements eventually become 1% improvements, which in turn, become 10% improvements. A powerful technique over long periods of time. Today, I attempted to make a 0.01% improvement in my selection of and performance of ornaments. I have a lot to learn about ornaments.
