'With their second vinyl release of 2013 Goon Club Allstars continue to carve out their own space in club-focused music, with Mssingno’s haunting debut 12” EP pitting cold, melodic synths and deftly cut vocal samples against growling basslines and off-kilter drum patterns. As well as being responsible for the huge ‘Brandy Flip’, a track played out across radio and clubs through 2013, last year the London-based producer scored some deserved attention producing ‘Drugs Don’t Work’ for masked Tottenham MC Cas (formerly Castro). His icy, romantic flip of ‘The Verve’ tune of the same name provided the ideal backdrop for a rare glimpse into Cas’ self-inflicted weaknesses and here proves to be just as effective at stirring the emotions without the aid of a vocal narrative.

Whether he’s toying with the slick ‘n’ sensual, as is unashamedly evident on the heated 808-driven opener ‘Skeezers’, or bittersweet quasi-R&B twisters on one of the year’s more unlikely watery-eyed earworms ‘XE2’, Mssingno’s first excursion on wax is earnestly dedicated to the feels; all of them. Case in point: ‘XE3’s weary-hands-in-the-air sunrise synths juxtaposed perfectly by ‘124th’s hood-up cap-down gulliness.

It may be a dangerously well-trodden arena, blending bold synths with pitch-bended vocals, but few producers in the last few years can hold a candle to Mssingno’s craftsmanship and knack for progression. Simply put, Mssingno is one of those rare ones, the ones that leave a mark and his debut serves as a bold statement of intent for both himself, and the rest of the Goons.'

Inspired by the decentralised release of Alkisah by Senyawa, any label sharing similar values could release their own version : "the artists and the labels participating in this compilation believe in a more equitable and collaborative future for our scenes, one guided by principles of solidarity economy, distributed decision-making, and the rejection of capitalist notions of culture, music and space."

It's a truly Latin American affair as Chilean producer Rasgar meets with Uruguayan artist ojosfinos on a thumping track called 'Mapas', a taste of the upcoming 'Intersticios' EP which is set to come out on a Colombian label Artificio. The release - that will otherwise feature further Latin American talents: Rachiid Paralyzing, Brainscan and Alfacenttauri - focuses on the experimental electronic music soundscapes based on diverse genres like techno, glitch, ambient, noise or even funk carioca, all imagined by multi-talented Rasgar whose experience of not only being a DJ/producer but also curating a sound art festival and creating audio installations for musuems resulted in this ambitious EP.

Matt Mauldin AKA Wheez-ie has been exploring the far corners of footwork for years, first via releases on the likes of Fool's Gold and Trouble & Bass and now via his own Southern Belle Recordings, which launched in 2014 with DJ Rashad's posthumous We On 1 EP. Originally begun with the intention of showcasing Wheez-ie's own productions, Southern Belle's second release now comes in the form of his Missed Connections EP, out November 13th and featuring the choice cut debuted here, "OG Deth."

"OG Deth" is a thumping slice of footwork on an EP full of familiar samples, displaying a deep knowledge of genre tropes while also subverting them. The chattering vocal cuts through thunderous subs and scattershot percussion hits insistently like a stranger pounding on your front door, all making for a frantic but addictive listen.

Wheez-ie - OG Deth

2014 Tokyo Academy alum Zopelar has since been making waves in Brazil and beyond, appearing on a split 12” with Soul Clap and honing his skills behind the decks as a resident at Warung in São Paulo. Now comes the 'Hamato' EP, Zopelar’s debut release on his freshly-inaugurated In Their Feelings label, run with his friend Davis and showcasing Zopelar’s taste for refreshing and affective tech-house. 

Opener “Piramidal” - which we're happy to premiere here - reflects its title inspiration's convergent structure, with a growling bassline and piercing alarm clock tones fluttering over concrete drums. The 'Hamato' EP also features a Davis remix of the title track that has gotten play from Innervisions don Dixon, and familiar “Lost In A Moment” emotional vibes likewise pervade “Piramidal,” with subdued energy percolating to the peak triggered by a classic acid line. Wiggling through the hazy melody, the 303 is ultimately interrupted by a breakdown of queasy pads, a break of sunlight through the clouds ushering “Piramidal” towards a celebratory conclusion.

Zopelar plays the RBMA stage at SonarSound Santiago on Saturday, December 5th.
