Rumors of Royalty is an album that links my American roots to the African diaspora. Gospel, Miami bass, Hip hop, New Orleans Bounce ,Soul and R&B have had a major impact on my life. As a native of St. Petersburg, Florida and a long time resident of Brooklyn, NY, I wanted this album to reflect these influences.

If you've followed me from my My Space days, you MIGHT remember this one (lol). This actually may have been the first time I used the term "Jazzy Tofu" on a track I did, so I'm guessing this was done around the mid-2000s (as I didn't come up with the term until 2004 lol). I always liked this song from his "The Bootleg, vol. 1" CD and I was looking for ways to play it in my sets. So, I decided to put a nice li'l downtempo shuffle on it and VOILA! I was able to let Frank hear it once and he liked it enough for me to remix another track of his called "Groovin'". Hopefully we'll be working together again for the "More Favorites" project as well. Keep your fingers crossed...

Fertile Ground - Take Me Higher (Waiwan Remix)

On a Saturday morning at the start of November 2013, First Word Records took 3 of our favourite producers out of London to spend the day browsing through the vinyl shelves of the biggest record nerd we know - the incomparable Mr Thing. This was the culmination of an idea that first manifested itself on Record Store Day 2012. Like most ideas it was a natural conclusion to a conversation about records and music - kidkanevil had expressed a desire to dig through Mr Thing's sizeable collection for some inspiration. Chatting to Mr Thing it seemed unfair to limit this to only one producer - Tall Black Guy and Eric Lau were top of our wish list. So - a double 7" (Mr Thing would make a beat too - they are his records after all) in time for Record Store Day 2013 (yes, we're a year late). There was however one stipulation about the records from the usually mild-mannered Mr Thing:
'The guys can sample anything they like, but Nothing Leaves The House....'
And who were we to argue.....
The result is four tracks that celebrate our love for record digging, sample chopping and the simple love of a dope beat.

 The Decoders are at it again with another Rotary Connection cover of a cover, the classic known as "Respect" made famous by the likes of Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin.  This time, they have enlisted the talents of Oakland based chanteuse Mara Hruby (www.marahruby.com) and the illustrious Van Hunt (www.vanhunt.com).  This track will be included on their upcoming full length album release, "Adventures From Paradise: A Tribute To Minnie Riperton" coming out later this year. "Dub Mixes Volume 1" is our latest adventure into the dub room, taking the Jamaican Lovers-Rock classics of our first EP, Volume 1, and giving these studio versions a dub treatment.  We reached out to our extended family for the production, as well as doing our own dub versions.  The mixes for the EP include the talents of DJ Prophecy, Blakesbeats and our very own core production team (Itai Shapira, Todd M. Simon and Adam Berg).   We had so much fun twisting knobs and tweaking the filters on these mixes, and we're very excited to share with you our latest venture into the Jamaican tradition of "dubbing" these classics...enjoy!

Hailing from Atlanta, GA, Darryl Reeves is a saxophonist that effortlessly merges the lines between funk, soul & hip-hop, expressed from a platform rooted in jazz. Growing up in a musical family, Reeves attended the Northwestern Performing & Visual Arts Center in Miami. Moved by hip-hop samples originating from jazz, Reeves was led to being influenced by greats such as Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. Reeves studied music at Jackson State University. He subsequently completed his Masters of Music at the University of New Orleans, where he studied with Terence Blanchard and performed on the scene with Delfeayo Marsalis. In 2004, Reeves released the funky and playful Diary of a Bandstand, to ample acclaim. It featured Robert Glasper, Russell Gunn & Quamon Fowler and cemented Reeves' reputation for presenting a new outlook on the sound, style and production of jazz music. Reeves has kept a steady hand in not being limited to any specific genre. Some know him just as well for his production in hip-hop. Reeves caught Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson's attention with his ingenious jazz-funk remixes of Jay-Z's Black Album, which was spun upon many of the drummer's dj sets. Recently in Atlanta, he has been the music director of many highly acclaimed live sets with Aishah Rashied Hyman's Spreadlove and DJ Kemit. He has performed and recorded with notable artists including Roy Ayers, The O'Jays, Frank McComb, Angie Stone, Kirk Whalum, Jill Scott, Phonte, Toku, Janelle Monae, Young Jeezy, B.O.B. and T-Pain.
