Never previously released, these recordings took place in the 90’s. 
They represent a memorable time in my life, collaborating with some incredible musicians who had a profound influence on me. 
This project is a tribute to the powerful experiences we shared.

I compiled and remixed these tracks in a spirit of love and gratitude. 
I hope that some of this music transports you to your own islands of wild rhythms, intense harmonies and common joys.

I am forever grateful to the friends, and exceptional artists, who shared so generously their talent and their support, and to everyone who listens with an open mind and an open heart:

The result of an afternoon in the lab experimenting and exploring a newly resurrected and slightly modified little 1964 EICO 488 variable frequency tube dual-channel multiplexing switch, a swept signal generator and a pinch of insanity :)

Several minutes of ensuing material was declicked in iZotope RX (yes, sadly the EICO's tube multiplexor, although lovely in tone and saturation, has a clicking/popping habit) cut up and then randomly triggered in Kontakt with random levels, panning, filtering and reverb depths to create a cacophony of Amazonian birdsong... well that was the general idea anyway...

02 Boa Vista

Testing a newly restored 1947 EKCO All tube AM car radio playing Opus One by the superb Alan's "Sticky Wicket" Swing Band received from a local test transmitter.  I was quite happy how this one turned out - it came into my workshop in a pretty sorry state.

A car radio was quite a luxury in 1947 and would have been an expensive item to purchase for sure.  The sound quality is surprisingly good for an AM radio let alone a 73 year old one!!

1947 EKCO CR32 Tube Car AM Radio: Playing Alan's "Sticky Wicket" Swing Band

Testing out Adrian Utley's infamous and very awesome 1979 Maestro Echoplex EP-4 after it developed some capstan motor issues.

I love old tape delays - they all have a sound and character of their own and the EP-4 sounds particularly chunky with a great vibe and really cool sounding regerative feedback.

In this case a factory drum sequence from the Alesis Micron I keep in the workshop as a useful test source was fed into the EP-4 - and what a transformation!...

My archives are littered with literally hundreds of test recordings like this!

1979 Maestro Echoplex EP-4: Drum Munging Beast..

Having just invested in a crazy number of never used, still in their boxes, JAN (GE) ECF82 Triode-Pentode tubes I spent the afternoon determining whether I'd got myself something worthwhile or a useless pile of glassware..

- the answer?  Well I managed to lash up a working pre-amp, VCA, ring-mod and superhet mixer and then proceeded to have great fun going a bit nuts with it all...  yup - I think there are some interesting projects to come out of all these tubes!

ECF82: SuperHet Soup

This is what happens if you feed a couple of arpeggiated patches into a tube SuperHeterodyne Mixer built around an ECF82 tube with a 20KHz carrier and feed it into the demodulator stages of a 1961 Baldwin Panoramic Tone Converter chassis (originally from the ultrasonic spring reverb from the Panoramic Organ) deliberately detuned so the recoved signal is now magically... bells!  :-]

The carrier frequency was slightly altered between takes resulting in different bell ratios.

Please note since the detuned carrier is out of the PTC's rejection band, it had to be suppressed afterwards and iZotope RX did a truly amazing job of that!!

Incidentally - if the carrier is set to the correct frequency the original signal passes in-tact through the entire signal path surprisingly well.

Thank you for taking part in this project. 

My siblings and I are all living in different places, different cities, different countries. Christmas helped put all of us in the same place (well almost, I was on skype from Montréal, but everyone else was under the same roof). 
The opportunity was too good to pass and we decided to do a quick cover to mark the occasion. 

I hope we can make more of this.

All sounds including percussion are patches dialled into the Knifonium - not the VSE emulation - the real thing in all its glowing tube laden glory...
