     When you blur the lines of Hip Hop, Folk, Electronica, and R&B, a smudge of heart filled love songs will appear and lift your reality into the tentacles of the Jellyfish Brigade's debut album "Gills and a Helmet".  This six track ego shifter is the result of the harmonious pairing of song writer Lucas Dix and composer Jeffrey Acciaioli. Together, they construct a narrative that weaves through the perfections of the faults and failures that we encounter on a daily basis, while also pointing out the little things that make the struggles worthwhile.  Acciaioli’s hard hitting, emotive instrumentals swirl around Dix’s rapping and singing to create a soundtrack to self-discovery.
     "Gills and a Helmet" is a quest for honesty in the confusion of all of our distractions. Discover the delicate beauty in every mistake while listening to "Well Dwellers".  Escape the buzzing mess and drive of guilt with "Chasing the Shine", and rattle your weaknesses with "Tremor Dancer", as awareness thumps the Richter scale off the charts.

Portland hip-hop duo Jellyfish Brigade is teaming up with Minneapolis collective Polkadot Mayhem to release their debut full-length album, Diving Lessons, on Tuesday, June 24th. The album will be available as a “pay what you want” digital release at www.jellyfishbrigade.com. An interactive website complete with videos, pictures, lyrics, and a treasure map will be available at www.JFBxPDM.com where the more engaged listener can forage to find the settings of these songs. 

Diving Lessons details a two-year period in emcee Lucas Dix’s life that began as his best friend, Gavin Theory, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Theory and Dix began making music together as Hives Inquiry Squad in high school and moved to Portland from Wisconsin to pursue their artistic endeavors. Around the same time his best friend was diagnosed, Dix met a woman who introduced him to many of the scenic places Oregon is known for: the Cascade Mountain Range, Mt. Hood, the Columbia River Gorge, and the Pacific Ocean. These places, this new love, and the difficulties in supporting a dying friend set the backdrop, theme, and plot for the new Jellyfish Brigade album. 

Producer Jeffrey Acciaioli (aka The Great Mundane) provides the soundtrack for Dix’s self-exploration with melodic, electronic beats that are sometimes as playful as sun on the river. Other times, they are dark as a midnight hike through mountain fog. Dix’s stories describe the supernatural as normal, the ordinary as magical--detailing times of growth, happiness and hardship. Together, the duo created a debut album of hip hop songs with catchy, R&B infused hooks that explore the process of finding yourself while losing the people closest to you.

In The Green Grass

On Tuesday, June 30th, 2015, Jellyfish Brigade vocalist, Lucas Dix, will be teaming up with Polkadot Mayhem to release his first project under the moniker Lukulele Slim. The album, titled We’ve All Got Baggage by Now, will be available at www.lukuleleslim.bandcamp.com as a “pay what you want” download with t-shirts and physical copies available at the site as well.

We’ve All Got Baggage by Now consists of 10 folk songs all written on the ukulele by Dix. Created over the course of three years, the album expresses all of the experiences in Dix’s life that could be construed as baggage. “Wait Around for You” deals with a lover moving away. “Saying Goodbyes” touches on the death of people close to him, including his best friend and musical partner Gavin Theory. “The Effects of Suits and Ties on Dreamers” presents the idea of being consumed by work and letting that consumption ruin a relationship. “The Universe Doesn’t Care (That’s Okay)” talks about Dix’s own battle with cancer. Though these topics may seem heavy and saddening, the album also has an uplifting feel to it, with songs like “Lucky” highlighting the many ways we are fortunate in life.

Musically, the album resembles front porch and campfire sessions, minimal and emotional. With catchy hooks that beg to be sung in groups, the songs are draped in middle America folk with a bit of Dix’s hip hop influence. An amateur musician at best, Lukulele Slim invited Stephen Sauer (Loud Hound), Ed Curtiss, aka producer Shut-ins (Loud Hound) and Jay Cobb Anderson (Fruition) to fill out the album with some professional talent.

So grab a drink, cheers to your friends, family, and love ones, and celebrate all the heartbreak, joy, reflection, and understanding that allows us to be who we are. Recognize that “we’ve all got baggage by now”, but also recognize that we are lucky enough to help each carry on through it. 

Lukulele Slim - The Effects Of Suits And TIes On Dreamers

Last Monday, while getting ready to come home from work, I saw that Fruition had posted the instrumental to their newest single, "Labor of Love". I downloaded it, went home, and wrote the song pretending I was Jay, Mimi, Kellen, T Tom, and Jeff. I imagined them being out on the road, missing family, playing for crickets and packed houses, and living out there labor of love. 

We've filmed a video for this that will be dropping eventually. However, i wanted to share the song with all of you before the video dropped.

Fruition - Labor of Love (Remix by Lucas Dix of BCxLD ft Lukulele Slim)

When we first moved to Portland, Gavin and I had an overwhelming sense of, “We need to drop an album”, so we released a collection of songs called “Free Forever”. These were songs that we made during the muggy summers in Kenosha, the fungi filled frozen winters of La Crosse, and the lonely rainy seasons of our first year in the PNW. Some of these joints feature old friends. Some feature folks I haven’t seen or hollered at in a minute.

As time passes, I find myself wanting to continue my friend’s legacy. There is a desire to show everybody how incredibly ahead of his time he was, and there’s an underlying hope that by associating myself with some of his greatness, that I and others can find some of that same greatness in me. The world has changed a lot since Gavin died in April of 2012, but there’s no doubt in my mind that if he were still alive his voice would have been extremely integral in our modern uncertainty. I know that because these songs are almost a decade or more old, and they beautifully express the need to not only find hope in the chaos, but also the willingness to gully up and fight through the fear. To this day, my memory of Gavin as the strong-willed, viscerally honest wordsmith remains one my compasses.

This year, we’re releasing Open Mind Sessions Part 1 and Part 2, which feature 19 tracks made by two young rappers with dreams of exploring the universe and being solutions to the problem. One had a fierce understanding of the world (Gavin), and one was faking the funk and following the motions (me). I’d like to think I eventually got there, but I’m sure Gavin would like to let me know otherwise.

So bump this shit. Share it. Download it. Steal it. Stream it. Whatever.
All proceeds from the album will be donated to local musicians who were some of the Hives closest homies, and who are currently facing the realities of not being able to play shows due to our global pandemic.
